I Marie Kondo Tidied My Apartment - Organizing Closet, Desk, and Kitchen using KonMari Method

I Marie Kondo-ed my condo. After watching the entire season one of Tidying Up with Marie Kondo on Netflix, I was so inspired to apply her organization skills to my apartment. I'm a purger, but there was still a lot of mess in my life that did not spark me joy. Our closet was messy, the second closet with all our home and craft supplies barely closed, and I didn't have enough things in boxes. I followed all five teachings of the KonMari method: Clothing, Books, Paper, Komono, and Sentimental items. It took about three and a half days, constant guidance from Marie Kondo, and a lot of thanking to arrive at my tidied apartment.

I almost got emotional when you were talking about the patterns a lot of immigrant parents have about not throwing things away. I am 1st gen and easing my way into minimalism, this really hit home for me! Sometimes I get frustrated with the amount of "junk" they keep without considering the context of their upbringing and understanding the deeper meaning behind material items for them. Thank you for sharing that bit, loved the video!

Yes. It took me a while to understand why they were like this. I can completely empathize with why they have a hard time letting go. At this point, I just let them be happy, as the clutter doesn't affect their lives.

My parents aren't immigrants, but they are the children of Great Depression generation parents. The STUFF they KEEP OMG! After my mom passed away, my dad, brother, and I went through her stuff. She kept junk mail, grocery lists, and paint chips in folders that also contained trivial things like medical records and birth certificates. So yeah, I get the packrat patent thing so hard.

Haha my backrolls are deeper than yours😂. I've read the book and it definitely helped propel me forward in my decluttering journey, but the show is another matter all together. It's super focused on sububran American households who predominently shop at walmart/costso/ target. It plays a lot on the American dream. They tried to spin it into family therapy. I guess single people who keep things are hoarders, but cheery cookie-cutter families can call Kondo. I found the scenes with children automatically loving her odd and contrived, like producers were trying to make viewers be like "oh look, she's already a part of the family". I know most tv is fake, but there was something odd in it. I blame a lot of that on the producers' direction. That being said, I enjoy decluttering videos on KZbin way more than on the show - that's for sure.
@letitiakiu
@letitiakiu 5 жыл бұрын
Yes but you have boobs and I don't LOL. I didn't even think of that, but you're so right. It did oversimplify alot of internal struggles families feel. I mentioned in the premiere, but many of the women on the show would express their guilt about not being good partners or mothers because they "failed" at keeping the home tidy. I know Japanese culture can still be quite patriarchal so maybe this is not addressed, but the emotional labour that women have to go through and the unrealistic expectation that we bear sole responsibility of keeping the house clean, and now work fulltime as well, is so messed up. We still have that internalized guilt that clearly none of the men in the show felt.
@AlexaLikes
@AlexaLikes 5 жыл бұрын
Letitia Kiu Yeah, boobs in the front - boobs in the back 🤣. Exactly, you hit the nail on the head. It's funny you mentioned the women Japanese culture, I've seen a few articles popping up about how quite a few are moving away from having children and even long-term relationships so that they can focus on their own lives instead of husbands and children. Financial dependence and career goals has so much to do with it, of course.

I've always fought for equality in the relationship, now we have the knowledge to work on it together.

my mother is an immigrant, but my dad isn't. yet both share the same tendencies to not let things go. I think its the time period their parents grew up in and then the time era they grew up in. Those who grew during or shortly after the war tend to hold onto things as resources were limited during the war and during the rebound of the world. The baby boomers and children born after the war retain the habits of their parents, especially if they do not have much disposable income or little income at all. Many things also could be repaired back then, compared to today where items are sadly designed to be thrown away once damaged/worn out. But people will hold onto them anyways thinking it can be fixed when it can't, cause parts don't exist to do it like the older days. Just a theory...not facts.
