I gotta say I love seeing these old machines being recovered and being given a chance to come back to life But I do gotta say PLEASE be careful when using chains as they can snap and really hurt someone There was a farmer who lived about 20 minutes from where I am who was pulling a tree out of his field with a tractor and a chain. About 1/2 way though the job the chain broke and whiplashed straight through his cab and decapitated him instantly His family didn’t find him till the late afternoon when they came to the field and saw the tractor running at idle with both the back and front windscreens destroyed please be very careful when using high tension especially with chains as i would hate to see anyone especially you get hurt or let alone killed Keep up the great content Stay safe

That's why I hate using chains to pull stuff heard to many stories of them flying back and cutting people in two in the blink of an eye, watching them stand so close makes me nervous but I know they aren't dumb and should know the risk better than anyone

I actually have a story to tell here not about chains snapping and killing but sometimes else, my grandpa worked at a sand pit, they dredge and refine the sand there, now to get the sand leaving the plant they would use trains and one day there was an accident with one, a guy got impaled by the cupling mount while hooking the shunter engine up to some cars the dude had it go right through him but somehow he was alive, ambulance was called and they said this "if we remove you from this you will die" so he calls his wife who comes to the plant to say goodbye and the they disconnect the train and the car and he was dead instantly.

@@awolgamming7793 I'm surprised they didn't cut the coupling mount off the train, then bring him to the hospital where surgeons could cauterize and close the injuries before removing it. I mean chances are he still would have died, as it almost certainly would have become infected after being struck by dirty metal and having it stuck in him for a long time. But people have survived through similar injuries, so long as they can get them to the hospital where surgeons can properly close the cut veins and arteries. Then again, this was back in your grandpa's day, so techniques would be even worse off compared to today. They also might not have been able to get something to the area quick enough to cut him out.

You sound like an Iowa guy, same here born in IC.👍 back quite a few years ago I worked, (in denver) with a guy who had walked off the deck into the elevator pit of the building. I don't remember all of the details but he ended up falling on to a vertical piece of rebar that was embedded in a slab. They had to lift him up and cut off the rebar to take him to the hospital for surgery. He obviously made it as we worked with him but damn what a thing to go thru.... By the way, I was taught to throw a towel or moving blanket over a chain or cable so if it snaps the line drops to the ground.

Dave: I was in the heavy duty towing business for several years and actually had the pleasure to operate the first Holmes 1801 west of the Mississippi. It was a beast. As division manager I was tasked with numerous recoveries. I wanted to pass along one technique which I used several times . I specialized in cement mixer recovery, as you know a loaded STUCK mixer can be quite difficult to recover. Here it is: if access is from either end, try to run your main winch line under the stuck vehicle if possible to the front of the vehicle , secure it around the frame if possible in front of steer axel. When you apply winching not only do you apply a pulling force, but a lifting one as well. That’s it…. it worked for me, but might not be applicable to all situations….. Great Job, I love watching your content…Thanks

I love the videos of these types of recoveries! Curious about the weight on the trailer particularly, with a tandem limit of 38,000 in Utah. Scraper was loaded with the front axle over the trailer tandems, and it has to be close to that on the front axle of the scraper if not over. That thing looks HEAVY!!!

I never actually saw how it was done, but we had a transport driver in Reno, NV that hauled in 2 different Cat scrapers that were D.O.A. Both were dead stick and he loaded these by himself using only the recovery winches on the trailer and tractor. Didn't take all that long either. Wish I had seen how that was done. My part was replacing the engines in both. They did have air in the tires though, thats gotta help!

Sorry about your many troubles. Believe just enough to ask God and then ask for a miracle. Then tell Him what you want and put the answer into God’s hands! You not only will get a miracle, but will feel the joy of a whole corporation up there to help you. I for one think God is allowing bad things to happen right now because he wants His children to call on HIM and not the “beast” system, or to try to fix things alone. Hope this doesn’t frustrate you more! I agree all your troubles are resolved! ❤️🙏🏼👏🏻

My Dad once bought a scraper that looked very similar. Caterpillar had to print a manual from their archives. It cost $90 in the 90s. It was cable driven, and the cables were an inch thick plus. I was told at the time that it was only legal in three states, because of the cables. (Literally, the grandfather of "Oh, snap!). Eventually, they converted it to hydraulics. In the early Aughts, he had it scrapped.

Big ole scraper. Impressive machines. Good friend of mine used to drive those across Wyoming, Idaho and Montana. He’s got crazy stories about what these machines can do. If it runs again, could be a fun project to build something on: like a joyride machine for tourists or to pull against the monster truck
