I MESSED UP With My Huge Mourning Gecko Setup

I can't believe I made these mistakes on my mourning gecko setup. Simple little things that have caused a huge headache for me. This mourning gecko setup is amazing. Bioactive mourning gecko setups all look amazing but this one just looks great.

I would make a temporary setup in a plastic tub with a lid and catch them when you happen to see them one by one. Plastic tubs can be quite cheap for a large size, so that's great for a temporary setup. Once you got all 4 you can be sure there is nothing left in that hole. Then you can go ahead and close the hole and better yet, without having to worry about the geckos getting in the way or escaping in the process.

Hi Richard, I personally would leave them in there as is. I know you cannot see them and they may lay eggs inside the foam but if they do fill it up with eggs that may force them to move out depending on how big the gap is inside the foam. Must be quite a big air pocket if the can all get in there together and breathe et cetera. Failing that I would pick away very very carefully with a craft knife and tweezers and excavate the foam a tiny piece at a time from the front until you can see in maybe creating a cave in the process that is very open so you can eventually see in and they are accessible. Or if you had the time I would sit and watch for them to come out, feed a piece of wire through the mesh top with something firmly attached to the end when they try to go back in push the wire "stopper" down onto the hole temporarily plugging then raise it when they have moved away in case any of the others are still in the pocket. Once all four are out then you can plug it securely. I am guessing they will all come out to feed at roughly the same time??. My Geckos all get up around 9.30pm for food when the lights go off.

Make a temporary terrarium in a jar and capture them over time until you have them all then you can fill the hole up

Maybe what you could do is passively capture the mourning geckos as you see them and once you have all of them you could cap it off :) best of luck!

For the first issue I think I’d cut around the void in the foam to allow removal and make it easier to split it safely as a cross section to remove any geckos, then use cocktail sticks or something fast curing to reattach it after capping the hole, maybe hide the joins with sphagnum or substrate if you have a non-toxic quick drying way to do so otherwise I’d fit a piece of cork bark while it was removed that would overlap the seam and hide it. For the heating I’d probably put the clamp lamp outside just so as to not lose the space but the enclosure definitely has enough that it’s not even an issue, just a personal thing I guess.

The original Gorilla Glue could be used to re-attach the bit, I think. It is polyurethane based, so like expanding foam, but liquid. It expands a bit but not nearly as much as the foam, so it is easier to control. Alternatively, you can try super glue. I can't remember if it is OK to use with the foam, though. You may have to experiment. It is safe for animals once cured - people use it in fish tanks.

Omg, I feel you so much. I too failed with one of my designs recently. I wanted to design an enclosure with an integrated small pond so I glued a piece of plastic pipe into the corner of the terrarium. When I had finished the background and the substrate I found that the pond won't work so I ended up hiding the top opening of the pipe with moss... But it seems like I missed a spot. Now the geckos crawl in and out that pipe on a regular basis. You're definitely not the only one struggling with stuff like that, haha.

Re the plug mess: IKEA used to have those ROMMA boxes for hiding messy extension cords and plugs. They had slits in the sides for getting the cables in, and a lid to cover the whole mess. Not sure if they still sell them, but if you are decent at DIY you could build something like that yourself.

Yep one little hole and what a problem, just cut out a bigger area then they space is, making the sound might get them moving out in the first place and redo silicone it. No! l know it isnt that easy but what a pain hey, those little boogers.

You can buy a 12 socket power stripe for reptiles it comes in different sizes from 5 sockets up to 12 or 16 and it feeds the same power to all the plugs great item
