If alone. Make sure you don’t sleep right next to the trail. Go out of view. I had 2 incidents 1 going in to Duncanna and one further North. I ended up hiking near other hikers for 4 days because both guys knew the trail ahead of me. Very unnerving. I was warned the closure you get to New York be more aware because of stalkers. They were both near trail crossing roads and I was unaware of being watched. The danger is real.

You’re fairly humble but you must realize that your beautiful snd must be more careful on the trail. As a father of two adult strong daughters, i really want you to be careful and maybe carry a bear spray can. Ive had to change my plans twice on the AT once in Maine and once in Vermont because of armed nutters that were staying at the backcountry site we were staying at. Once with a buddy of mine and once with my oldest. That trail has some real squirrels on it and everyone MUST be aware at all times. Keep your head on a swivel there kid!! Be well! NQU

I enjoyed the potion on the Franconia Ridge. Used to live in NH and liked to go up there. The view is unbelievable. Not a place to be if you are afraid of heights. I took my sin up there when be was a little guy and folks on the trail were amazed such a little guy could grt all the way up there. Going down was more of a challenge once he realized how high up we were. I had to help him down off the ridge. We made it and went backpacking with a friend and his sons a few years later. We went from hut to hut. Pouring rain and windy. The rain was unrelenting. Blowing sideways. Always glad to stop at a hut and dry off and get into dry clothes. Your posts make me think about when I used to do stuff like that. Take care

one more thing, always pack 2 or three pairs of shoes/boots/sandals .. you meet a creepster you can change out, this way they cannot track you, try to change near water where you can go in and out in another location so its difficult to be tracked, learn those skills, animals track/hunt as well, scent change is good so carry a few scents as well, tiny little tubes easily accessible.. a predator gets on your trail you want to be able o throw them off while moving so a quick ditch, change scent and go... learn how to throw an animal or human off your track ..

He’s gone now and I’m devastated, and I’m hoping to do the AT next year. But I’m also a type 1 diabetic, that may make the thru hike impossible for me(so many supplies, keeping insulin cold…) my doctor said I can’t do it alone, too dangerous health wise. Enjoyed your hike and I understand the feeling that some people give off bad vibes. Glad you went pretty far away from that person. So I have a question. Didn’t you originally have an inflatable sleeping mat and then you went back to just a foam sleeping pad? How is that working out for. If I thru hike again I might look into using a foam pad instead of a inflatable one. Thanks! Forever onward, Stella, you brave soul👍🥾😊

How can you tell? The trail is full of creepy people,,,The homeless is rampant on the trail this year,,,what you think is a hiker may be someone living on the trail.

On those murder shows it’s mostly “normal” guys with family’s. Homeless people are the last people I’d worry about…. Worry more about a youth group leader or someone who works in a chocolate factory 😳🤔

Arcane, you have obviously never been to NYC, San Fran, Seattle, Portland, Los Angeles, or any other " progressive" hellholes where the homeless are given free reign to run rampant on the rest of society. They are treated like a protected species in these crime ridden cities.

Good news about the snake season. You're far enough north that it is less likely you will run into water moccasins aka cottonmouths. Timber rattlers are few and far between but they're out there and will rattle before striking. The thing you want to really look out for now is Lyme ticks!!! You're fast approaching the state they originated in (Lyme Connecticut) As for weird people I believe your situational awareness is top notch and you'll be fine.

Really should be armed doing things like things alone. Nobody should be a victim so always be vigilant of your surroundings and who is around and done become complacent. You can reduce a lot of risk by being a step ahead by doing those things. You can get a small pistol and an extra magazine and won't add bulk or much weight. Get a concealed carry permit and take a safety and training class. You'd be surprised what you ladies can fit in your purses or bags. That or kust on a holster even while on trail.

The good thing about camping in the UK is the next town/ village is never more than a few miles away, and you can walk the entire length of the country in days/ weeks, rather than months & months, and very little in the way of venomous or dangerous creatures, we have adders apparently but I know no one that has seen one in the wild ever, be careful out there, I am not sure i would be so brave

Is it bravery, really? Although I feel this is clickbait it seems more unwise than brave. True story : While traveling down the road towards town one day with her husband, my neighbor’s cousin opened the car door, and just stepped out. No warning to her husband who was driving. My neighbor quickly added, “she ain’t crazy, she’s just ain’t afraid of anything”. I kept it to myself, but I concluded her cousin was more crazy than brave. That just isn’t smart. Like hiking the AT alone as a very petite woman, especially unarmed.

I camped up there and we went down to a campsite that had water, and it just had a creepy feeling. Like hair standing up on back of neck, whispering for no reason, always looking over shoulder type feeling, We got water and booked it. Went up at the trail further and stealth camped. Was still eerie but not as bad. This was probably 2 years ago.

careful hiking anywhere along but im from jersey (not sure if u are) and a lot of people have charm here...don't trust anyone. also, lots of very dangerous areas you shouldn't ever go near here. people from jersey can sniff out "foreigners" very very easily. we keep to ourselves, we almost never make random conversation unless ur old and wise, and talk fast, walk fast, we don't stop for anyone bc we're weary of scams, etc. we are not happy-go-lucky like you seem to be which is great! but it stands out, don't be so trusting of charming people. but i'm sure you know that i just see time and time again people falling for "the charm". glad you listened to ur intuition but id never get in the car with a stranger
