Great review of the Calais. I love the upgrade. It sure sounds good. It’s not very fast but you don’t always buy V8s like these for their speed. It’s still a fun car. The suspension setup looks good. Thanks for the review.

Nice sounding V8. Gratz to Lucy for the Upgrade. If the auto gearbox feels " Sluggish " it most likely needs Auto Transmission Fluid ( ATF ) and Filter change with Torque Converter Flushed out.

Depends i owned a 6 speed manual and a 4 speed auto VY SS ute and the auto felt sluggish and slow through gears even compared to my old trimatic autos behind my old HQ ute and VH Commodore. Mates also had auto VU and VZ and feel sluggish even when fully rebuilt. They are if used to a different gearbox. Unless stall convertoer and worked with corvette clutches and shift kits. then feel good. But standard they all feel sluggish.

The Calais is geared differently to the SS and SV8 as they were considered a luxury car. That being said, I'd have have a Calais over the others just for the all black finishes on the hood lining and pillars in the interior. I miss my VY Calais 😌

Cap on those power figures 🧢 You’d be lucky to get 290kw out of a cammed LS1 with head work, full exhaust, intake and tune through an auto even with a high stall.. Manuals will make 310kw+ with those engine mods and tune.

you didnt get 310kw at the flywheel with a mafless tune that makes it 260rwkw through an A4 my vy has pacemaker long tubes into dual 3 inch exhaust an otr with mafless tune and 3200 convertor A4 built box and a 229/235 camshaft in it and mine makes 270RWKW

I have one of these myself same colour I keep my cars as near stock as possible as they are worth more ! There are loads of people who buy these and wreck them from modifications usually done badly if you scratch beneath the surface ; I did swap out that ghastly head unit , put in a proper system with reverse camera and handsfree phone capability , I suggest Lucy you rip it out those stock systems are gutless

I only like the VYs in V8 form HSV/SS/SV8/Calais etc there's a good reason she went through 13 lol I've owned 1 VX for 15yrs & the day I bought it I drove 2 VYs (SS and Calais) that was very slow compared to the VX, most or nearly all VY Calais V8s are all sluggish compared to a VY SS & VY SV8 for some reason, my VE series 2 wagon does 0-100 in 6.8 seconds but 20 inch tyres was probably not good for "0-100" next time try it with some 17s or 18s 👍 "I'm here for the car lol" 😍🥰😍

The Calais had a different rear gear i than the SS and Sv8. It was sold as the luxury version afteall

Oh wow… 6.9 seconds. If you’re going to put a bigger cam in it, and depending how big, it might rob you a bit of bottom end power and torque, so you should consider a higher ratio diff. That will definitely get you better acceleration times with some descent rubber in the back (as in tyres). It’s still a beautiful car and I’ve always liked the Calais interior.

Around 6 or 7 secs to 100 is standard for all these Commodores, whether they are 200rwkw or 400rwkw. They just don't do well with putting the power down. Not to mention the majority of owners run cheap China tyres

@@RossReviewsau These cars are quite aggressive with there torque management. When it's tuned, ifnyou remove this totally add a little more timing and fuel they are completely different. At the same timenin the trans tune adjusting bith the shift speed and rpm will make a massive difference. With an OTR Maffless tune that I did using hp tuners 4:11 gears I was running consistent 12.7 - 12.9. Then when I put my own custom grind in and stall I rant an 11.2 @122 mp/h

To the young lady who owns this car if you decide to convert it to a manual get the t56 magnum gearbox as the standard t56 transmissions are old (but still good if you find one that is in good condition)are mostly clapped out and with the shrinking global supply of quality spare t56 parts it will be better to get the newest version

In the 20th July edition of just cars magazine they advertised the t56 magnum transmission with the bell housing to fit early Holden v8’s (from VT2 through to VZ)as they are different. I am not sure it the stock tailshaft will fit on the magnum you will need to research it
