I've got the MW5 and the road equivalent. They are obviously warmer than a normal shoe but not much better than overshoes. Water gets in from the top as well if you don't wear some sort of gaiter...less hassle than overshoes though and not too expensive, so still useful in winter

Good choice. I had the previous Shimano boots but upgraded to the Northwave which have the best winter boots. Their main models have a continuous neoprene collar with no open / close velcro so it’s harder for the water to enter. Plus you can seal them with a rubber gasket to make them absolutely waterproof (many other companies models allow water in from the top) or use with the Pearl Izumi Amfib bibs that have a built in gasket. And their sole is stiffer than the Shimano. But this latest model of the Shimano is an improvement, they seem to have copied the best parts of the NW, collar / Boa

I never found Northwave shoes to be all that warm.

I have purchased these shoes about a week ago and ridden in 28 and 30 degrees Fahrenheit , my first ride I wore with under armor winter socks that are not cycling specific but does keep feet somewhat warm. My toes ended up getting cold after 2 hours on the bike. When I got off bike a took off shoes realized that feet was sweating and may have caused cold feet. My second ride was at 30 degrees Fahrenheit and this time I wore with castelli merino wool cycling socks. My toes got cold after 2 hours on bike. I figured I would have longer to ride before feet getting cold. I really had hope for better results for a shoe over $200. I’m going to try again. Hopefully i have better results because I got about the same riding time in $40 neoprene overshoes.I wish these shoes had a satisfaction guarantee.

Great shoes ! Use them with my Endura rain socks. Hose them of after riding through the mud and puddles of water. Still dry socks and feet. During temperatures around 4 degrees they are great, haven't had them long enough to use in temperatures around or below zero Celsius.

Heated overshoes or insoles? Checkout Racer E-cover overshoes.. Also Hotronic heated insoles can be pretty much integrated in to any insole without adding much (like 2mm at the toes, if that) height! I’ve used the insoles in the winter, the overshoes are a bit steep in price (pretty much double the price of a Hotronic kit)

I just put a small castelli overshoe under a big shimano neopreno overshoe over my shoes and its good down to 1-2 degrees celsius. And if its under that I just dont ride outside.

I ride to work daily all year round. I’ve had 2 pairs of mw81 and currently have the old version of the mw7 and despite being gore tex they aren’t waterproof. I use gore over shoes to make them waterproof. The other thing I find is that without overshoes the water runs down my over trousers and straight into the shoe. I’m 6’2 though.

Same for me, I found those gripgrab neoprene gaiters though which do help a lot in terms of water intrusion...

je d - yes, bibs just get soaked and water drains into the show. But with a continuous collar like the Northwave and this new Shimano you can create a gasket and put it over the top of the shoe and against the bare leg and have bibs outside. Zero water gets in To create the gasket, cut the wrist section of a washing up glove. You might have to experiment with size / length. But mine were perfect first time from a medium glove, start long and shorten it as necessary. Stood in a small ford, zero water in. Hosepipe on boots after every ride, zero water in

Yo Ronny honestly riding in the winter sucks. Stay with us in Chiang Mai. So many HC climbs. Were on training camp.

If your hands are suffering from the cold as well, try ordering a pair of bar mitts, (handlebar pogies). They make cold weather riding way more comfortable.

I bet winter shoes are great when it’s cold and dry!! I hope they work out for you!! More often than not where I am it’s cold and wet. So I use a few wraps of cling film around my shoes then over shoes over that. I tried winter goretex shoes but they just filled up with water and turned into a swimming pool which just make my feet way colder and uncomfortable. The water rounds down I tot he shoes via the ankle opening, even with AmFib bibtights which have a gator that wraps over the top of the shoes. The cling film lets the water drain out but blocks wind and still keeps my feet drier than anything else I’ve tried. But I don’t suffer from cold feet like many people. And I bet winter shoes are great when it’s cold and dry.

James Hooker - these type of boots and the Northwave have a continuous collar so water should not get in if you add a gasket over the top against your bare leg and keep the bibs outside the boot. I thought the Amfibs would work, but if it does not seal tight then make one from a washing up glove

I use platform pedals and regular boots. I tried mtb winter shoes some time ago. Good, but when it's snowy and icy, I fell few times. I suck at uncliping. And on 0C and just little above, wet snow will freeze on cleats and pedals, making things even more difficult. Wind cools bike enough that it's temperature is lower than air temperature.. at least metal bike. Not sure about carbon.

Why does a winter shoe have perforated upper?
@Chris66able2 жыл бұрын
I got these and the perforations are a big problem, it lets water in which is then trapped between the outer boot and inner goretex sock, the water freezes your feet as you ride. Rubbish.
@achn2b2 жыл бұрын
@@Chris66able Look at the fairly new Lake MX146. It looks somewhat similar to the Shimano shoe , but no perforations, and Thinsulate insulation.
@Chris66able2 жыл бұрын
@@achn2b Will do. It really puzzles me, what brain donner thought of putting perforations in a waterproof boot ! Its no different to adding them to Wellies.
