Couple people just sent this to me, hey Jordan! This sounds so much better haha - I'm surprised at how much you remembered about the session, stoked some memory fires for me for sure. Hearing vocal isolations on youtube is both mortifying but a solid reminder how much time has passed, ha. I think I remember us all learning a lot at the time - You're still the nicest guy in a studio chair!

Absolutely LOVED this video and would totally watch more. It's so helpful to see your workflow and decision making process that take the 80% ready raw tracks to that polished elite level I find the biggest challenge in re-mixing an old song is that your recording quality may have been more questionable from back then, so you're basically trying to solve a puzzle that's even harder.

Takeaways: 1. Trust the process. Be consistent & use a template. 2. (In a time crunch) don’t sweat the small stuff. I have 5 kik & 3 snr samples always ready. Raise the controller fader and balance in seconds. Also have a fake room with room verb set to 100% wet. Raise fader to taste. 3. Use at least a single channel USB controller. No one has time wrote automation in an hour. 4. There’s no substitution for experience. You crushed your old mix because you referenced, recalled, and put to use everything you’ve learned over the last 15 yrs. Great vid and great song. Thanks!
@dylanjastle Жыл бұрын
The new mix is obviously better. But there’s a charm to those early 2000s punk mixes that aren’t technically perfect, but still hit hard. I didn’t mind the original mix at all for this song. Gives me a nice nostalgia blast
@istankimjong-unbutcantstan3398 Жыл бұрын
I agree. The new mix sounds sharper but the original has that raw sound that Punk is known for. This mix sounds like it could be more for Pop radio. In some cases, I have preferred the original mix which was not as "clean" because of nostalgia.
@TheCoreys Жыл бұрын
These were my thoughts too…
@TheRobGuard Жыл бұрын
I agree, this mix sounds more "metal" than punk... I like the rawness punk is known for, not that clicky kick, etc that modern metal is more known for. Punk is more like rock but much rawer... I guess its the guitars and vocals that really makes punk to be punk.
@snoolee7950 Жыл бұрын
@@TheRobGuard well said. habit today is to put compression on everything and boost the sub octave. neither is very musical. I've been working with tube mono recording and single driver full bandwidth speaker. there is no sub octave heh heh. the music is in the midrange. everyone knows that.

15:21 Using a totally Pop song among all the rock references. I like how the bass became more articulated from how it sounded prior to the treatment. I tend to like the bass where the notes can be heard distinctively opposed to merely the rumble.

PRO TIP: The guitar bus should have a sufficient amount of 500-600 Hz, as stacking guitars that are (usually) scooped (in this genre) you can end up with a real deficiency of weighty mids. =)

Returning to older mixes and doing tests like this are imperative to identifying your growth as an engineer. For example, at a point in time, I thought every track needed umpteen plugins to achieve a pro sound when in reality, the majority is outlined by the fader.
@Brutuscomedy Жыл бұрын
I'm starting to become a firm believer in fast mixing. CLA has demonstrated this. I think our first impressions tend to be fairly accurate and fatigue sets in after a while, leading to over-processing and heavy handed moves. It's easy to get lost in the weeds, especially in this era of digital recall.

Recently there was a plan to build a new village on this old base. Road access isn’t that great, so the government offered the council a grant of £30m to sort the necessary infrastructure. Fascinating video if nothing, but for seeing the difference in mixing styles of today compared to 15 years ago. For me, I actually prefer the original mix a lot more. There are ways to improve it for sure, but the way the new mix is so clean and compressed just doesn't resonate with me and kinda changes the vibe of the song.

@rena100097 ай бұрын
honestly i like the old one more. new one sounds more modern for sure. but it sounds like paramore or something where as the old one sounds punk and raw which i think serves this song better. idk i think the aesthetic is different and i actually do like the old one more. there's something to be said about the vibe that a mix sets beyond clarity and "radio readiness". they're definitely both great tho so maybe i'm splitting hairs.
