Hey Alex, I don't know if it's different with European bees, but in South Africa you always move the bees at night so that all the bees are in the hive and sleeping when you move them. When we moved our bees, we did it at night and they didn't even wake up and when we opened the hive at the new location they were still asleep. just thought I'd let you know. Peace.✌

Hey, looking to get into beekeeping in SA. Any starter tips to get orientated and connected with local communities? Based in Cape Town.
@Jaciuwu10 ай бұрын
It does not have to be night, it just needs to be after all the bees come to the hive, in Poland its around 6pm that they enter the hive and sleep :)
@Jaciuwu10 ай бұрын
And yes its true, not a good idea to move the hive until they all come back, but you can move them before they go for first flight of the day as he did
@calebcaetano186310 ай бұрын
Okay, here they come back at dusk, so we moved them just after sunset.

With the lack of food and brood, perhaps the colony absconded? If there were no dead bees, then the colony likely did not die. But now you have another hive box for Springtime swarm carching! :)
@kiaya00710 ай бұрын
Agreed the lack of dead bees and honey and brood all points to the bees doing a bit of house moving on their own. Kinda cool though because now Alex has contributed to nature and the wild bee population because of his hobby.
@SquidSnackG Жыл бұрын
Hey Alex! Make sure your beestands are pig proof, if they are able to get out, they will 100% go for the honey. they sniff that miles away. a large heavy platform should keep the bees safe from the pigs. Good luck with the next chapter! Im looking forward for a night cam to figure out whats in your back yard. And how you will engage in these problems.
@riktheyellowmonkey Жыл бұрын
Absolutely. Even I know that pigs will eat absolutely anything. And that definitely includes high calory honey. Probably bees as well tbh.
@tealkerberus74810 ай бұрын
I'd be putting a small heavy duty fence around the bee yard. Horses and cattle won't deliberately attack a beehive, but sometimes those squared corners are too tempting as a scratching post, and they can knock a hive over pretty easily. Really there's no farm livestock that I'd trust in the same enclosure as a beehive.
@Crystal9123. Жыл бұрын
For the dead hive, they could’ve swarmed if there was no dead bees, they could’ve joined the other colonies if they were a tiny hive… maybe leave some frames with some extra honey as well for them to survive the cold nights. :) I’ve had bees since I was 4 in northern Ohio (US) now 20. So it gets cold. If you move they may get stressed and might lose some bees but they should be alr

Hello, I wish you success with your new beginning. I want to give you a few pieces of advice. The first and most important is to use glasses when mowing the lawn, as there is a high risk of losing an eye. The second thing is related to bees. It's very unpleasant that there is a pig farm so close to the hives because if there is no other water source nearby, the bees will collect water from the pigs' mud, which is quite unpleasant. You must provide them with a place with clean water necessarily.
@CB-xr1eg Жыл бұрын
What I would do is to put something like a horse trough near to the beehives. The bees will go to the nearest source and drink that. Mind you, if the pig's water is unpleasant, would the bees actually drink it?🤔
@esthersanchez2264 Жыл бұрын
Yes a water source. As a bird feeder, I have been providing water for wildlife for 3 yrs the bees would let me know when the plastic lids were empty. They need water too 😂

Your choice in the field by the building was a better option, the current spot is too close to the road. You will need some protection from other livestock, even nosey badgers. You will have to strap the hives to the stand to stop the animals/weather moving them. Good luck for the comming season and keep up the great content

I am sorry for the loss of the bees in the hive. It happens and it's definitely a lesson for you. Varroa mites are a dangerous enemy of bees and, according to your video, the most likely cause of colony collapse. One note, during transport, the vibrations of the bees cause them to stir and produce a bit of heat. Completely closing with tape is not recommended because of overheating of the bees and they easily die. You must have a mesh cover or floor for ventilation. Good luck in Bristol.

Sorry to hear that you lost one of your hives Alex. It's most common to lose them from mites or water in the wet, slightly above freezing winters that you (and I) have. Once that hive got weak, it probably got robbed out by the beehives around it--which means that if it was mites, your other hives likely picked up a dose of them when robbing. I'd consider doing another treatment (or multiple) over the winter if you haven't yet. Best of luck, and congrats on the move!

Hopefully at the new place you have a freezer as I find that and a warming box are life savers. One kills the unwanted bugs/saves comb and the other extends the selling time. Congrats on the move and hope all's well with you and your bee's

The straight handle Make it Possible to Incrase the Toolheadangle to trim Precise grooves orund Corners, or you can Turn The Toolhad about 90degree to cut Corners clean.
