I have a similar set up in my 4th gen 🤍 It’s cozy and functional and CHEAP! I decided against a platform so I had plenty of headspace for spending rainy days “indoors.” If you ever see a battery candle on the cheap it’s a nice addition. I bought an entire box of them for $10 on Amazon. Each one lasts about 60 hours. I like the dim, amber light and not having to fuss w recharging yet another item. Happy trails!

Your final build will be much enhanced by your decision to hit the road first with a minimal build. It will enable you to make more informed decisions for the final configuration. Nice camera work.

What's the wheel and tire size? My buddy is looking to get a 4th gen and I'm hoping he does so I have an overlanding buddy, but the build has to be cheap

Wheel size is 16 inches and tire size is 265/75/16

Curious why a tent, and a mattress… does the mattress go up top? Or do you only use the tent in certain places/weather?

The mattress stays inside. I don’t really use the tent when it’s raining or super cold. It’s there as an option because it’s a lot more spacious than the inside of the 4runner. I also just already had it up there.

I’ve since gotten rid of the RTT so it’s 0% now but I used it extensively during the summer. Will probably get one again soon since I miss it quite a bit. I got rid of it cause I needed the storage space on my roof

What kind of food do you make on the road for yourself?

Pretty much the same stuff as I make at a real house. Burritos, pasta, stir fry, etc. I just can’t really bake anything or store things that need to be refrigerated for very long.
