So sad to hear I visited Venice over 30 years ago and it was still a magical city then and Carnaval was the event of the season but obviously 30 years has changed everything. I am really happy that you did this. Give me a total perspective looking for retirement property and I am now I’m thinking about just going total quiet and heading to the Tuscan Valley.

Getting lost on the beautiful side streets and having relaxing apertivos and a great meal are the highlights of Venezia, it can DEF feel like Disneyland here, agree with all the points to a T

Holy shit it's so nostalgic to me! My dad used to work in Venice (for the oriental art museum, visit it some day!), so he brought us there at least once a month for a good chunk of my life. I have so many happy memories of it, the vaporetti (the boat buses), the Biennale (if you're still there when it's live visit it!), all the walking, the "secret" local restaurants my dad brought us to that didn't cost an arm and a leg to go to, being on a huge ferry passing in Canal Grande back when they didn't restrict access to large boats in it, seeing the whole island from the elevated position in the middle of the night... Love it. I also live pretty close to it, so I still go there occasionally... And I agree, beautiful city to visit, not necessarily to live in. The carnevale is usually a huuuge sea of people all in costume and walking together (think of tourist season, then 3x that). The lockdown really restricted access to everything. That's also probably why seagulls are so aggressive now, they got used to no people around and having to fight for food. Also, p.s.: not to be creepy but... I instantly recognized that church, I slept in there for a night while kayaking from Treviso to Venice, it was the last night when we put away the kayaks and went around Venice for a bit, then slept in there. Being in the Scout groups here is completely different than in the US, and lets you sleep in every religious place that exixts.

Don, I'm like 90% certain I stayed in your apartment like six years ago, for one night. I woke up to that view, extremely hungover - opened the window and had a refreshing smoke. I was in the city with my austrian friend - he got sunstroke in the city. We then went and got absolute hammered. 8/10 city, needs less tourists.

Great upload. I agree with many of the things you said. It is incredibly touristy there. I went in February and the crowds were unbearable. Massive crowds of them coming off those big ships and just getting in your way, stopping to take photos on those small bridges etc. Also agree about the food. Found it very difficult to find a decent restaurant without doing some research. Most restaurants are geared for tourists. We ended up eating in a Chinese restaurant one night too. Haha. Beautiful buildings tho. Not sure I'll ever go back

For all things cicchetti, go to Cantinone Del Vino Già Schiavi. Trust me on this. There's also a cool bar called the Corner Pub there. I believe it's a hangout spot Wake Forest students. Wake Forest has Venice campus. You're spot on about the touristy aspect of Venice though. It does get annoying, but it's a beautiful city nonetheless.
