As someone from Germany I'm really impressed by this well done Some pronunciation tips: eu in German words is pronounced like the oi in oil ei is pronounced like the i in knight ie is pronounced like the ea in easy J is usually pronounced like Y in English Also our ch is really weird when it's after a consant or a light vowel (i,e,ä,ö,ü) it's pronounced similar to a sh in English when it's after a dark vowel (a,o,u) it's pronounced like in the Word loch in some Scottish dialects but since that sound is apparently really hard for native English speakers I don't blame you if keep pronouncing it as K in those cases
@Sweating_Geography3 күн бұрын
Thanks! Ill keep these in mind.
@sebastiandierks79192 күн бұрын
@Aureus07 Another pronunciation tip, as it comes up quite frequently, the letter "u" is pronounced like double o in English, say in school or moose. So all the cities or states ending with -burg like Brandenburg are pronounced like "-boorg", not "-burke".
@elundef2 күн бұрын
Also: "Ch" is a little bit like the first part of "cute". Cute does not sound the same as computer for example. It has that little noise at the beginning, which, I assume, comes closest to our "ch"
@Sweating_GeographyКүн бұрын
@elundef I'll look into this. To be honest though, that just confused the hell outta me 😂
@elundefКүн бұрын
@@Sweating_Geography But you see how the word "cute" has that little "hissing sound" in the beginning? That air blowing out at the back end of your tongue? I think there is no sound you use in the English language, that comes closer to the German "ch" than that. But even if that is the case and you understood it, I can imagine that it's super hard to use, when trying to pronounce something while trying to get that sound working within a word. Whatever!

Basically it's called Baden-Baden because the city had the name Baden and was in the state of Baden. So, back in the days it was called Baden(Baden) or Baden in Baden to distinguish it from other Badens in Germany. Over the time it was just more convenient to call it Baden-Baden haha

There are many cities in the german speaking regions (and those in eastern Europe that were formely German or had a significant german speaking population) with the name „Baden“, „Bad …“or ending in „-bad“. Those are places with a thermal spring. Some examples are Baden (CH), Baden bei Wien (A) or Karlsbad (Karlovy Vary, CZ), Bad Lippspringe and Bad Reichenhall (both D). In England, there‘s another famous example: Bath.

The strange name of Schwäbisch Gmünd at 8:37 derives from the word "münden", which basically means to flow into or to merge, refering to an estuary of different rivers and streams. So the verb "münden" turned into "Gmünd", basically meaning where the rivers/streams meet. The word "Schwäbisch" is just the word "Swabian" in German. This got added to the front of the Citys name in order to distinguish between different citys/towns called "Gmünd" and was chosen because the city lies in the Swabian part of Württemberg.
@carlosdumbratzen63328 сағат бұрын
similarly the reason Baden-Baden is called that is because it was linked to the Margraviat Baden. Or better: the Margrave of Verona also became ruler of the city Baden, established his seat Hohenbaden (basically a castle above the city, where it got its name from) and during the early modern period this Margraviat gained in influence while the city slowly became less important. The rulers moved first to Rastatt and later to Karlsruhe. To distinguish it from other citys and towns called "Baden" it was Baden bei Rastatt or Baden in Baden. The city itself has Baden in its name since the romans established it and built on top of it hotsprings. This is where the first part of Baden-Württemberg comes from, because the state itself is a union of the grand duchy of Baden and the kingdom of Württemberg (simplified alot).

I'm from North Rhine Westphalia, and I'm not bad with the cities... but I would be unable to fill these in. Especially not knowing which city is bigger and which one smaller. Didn't expect that Hilden had more than 50.000 people living there, and it's a 5 minutes walk from home.

Wow. Well done. I do not know any german who can do this. (there proabably are a few but I do not know them). And then I am proud that I can pinpoint 150 countries and all the capitals of the US states.
All cities in German speaking countries that have baden in them have that name, as far as I know, since the time of Karl der große/ Charlemagne or maybe even a little earlier. He loved thermal waters and there was probably some survey across the land to find out where they were and they marked these cities on the map as "bad". The only reason he chose Aachen as his imperial home was because of the thermal waters, as far as I know. If you got to some of these cities called bad xxxx you will probably find natural thermal waters or there used to be.
