I have 10 mudskippers. Four African Mudskippers and six Indian Mudskippers! I have built some nice habitats for them. In this video, learn about how I have decorated my brackish aquariums for my mudskippers and what fish I am keeping with them.

Some of the best brackish water plant options include: Anacharis - Beautiful light to bright green leaves, with branching stems covered in bunches of linear, whorled leaves. Anubias - Lush green arrow-shaped foliage that is easy to grow; attaches itself to rocks, driftwood, substrate, and may even float. Java Moss, Seaside Brookweed, Marimo Algae Ball, Moneywort - Creeping Jenny (Lysimachia Nummularia). All 6 of these can be used like the Java Fern in brackish water. You can lower the salinity of your specific gravity lightly to promote the growth of the plants. Just double check the requirements of your fish. Remember the fish are euryhaline fish and can tolerate changes from almost full sea water to almost fresh every 6 hours in nature.

Actually red mangroves are very easy, stick them in the sand, mist the leaves once a day, and that’s about it, I don’t even give mine much more than window light and they grow like weeds, and I live in Pennsylvania so it’s not like I’m even giving “tropical” sunlight

The battle between brackish and plants rages on. Lol I would suggest ribbon grass, but it gets pretty tall for a tank. Moneywort (Lysimachia nummularia) does well (sometimes called creeping jenny). Java moss and Marimo moss balls thrive in brackish water. Every time I catch one of your videos, I want to set up a mudskipper tank. Lol They are fantastic.

The new lens looks great! Boom poles are nice, but I find they're annoying to use and they add an extra stand (keep in mind you need the counter weight). I love my wireless Lavaliers, I use the Saramonic UWMIC9s. They're cheap (for what they are) and give GREAT sound.

Awesome of you to work on the greenery issue! I'm just wondering if some of the macro algaes from salt water would do in brackish? Also, I am thinking about the salt grasses that grow naturally in these tidal biotopes. Most of them are tall, like rushes, but I wonder if there are some that my be suitable for aquariums?

Do you already tried to put the anubias on a small pot which contain soil and fertilizer and burrow small part of the root on the soil? So you don't need to mix the fertilizer with water and spray it again.🙂

Hi Zenzo. Joe here...you posted my brackish water paludarium mudskipper tank with the waterfall a while back. I was just checking in to see your latest progress after a couple months....and I see you tried your hand at brackish water live plants and had the same bad luck as me. My Java Ferns and Java Moss didn't exactly die...but as you found out, most of these commercially available aquarium plants do NOT like brackish water. The only plant so far that seems to do okay is the Jungle Val plants. Also, because my tank has tides....that also limits the above water terrestrial plant selection as its even harder to find land plants that can handle daily brackish water submersion. I see you are now trying to keep Java moss above water using humidity for moisture. What I am curious about is how you keep your glass aquarium from fogging up with such high humidity? My paludarium lid is half glass and half plastic grate/egg crate as if I use all glass its so humid I cannot see in there and my air plants don't like it above 70%. do you just wipe the glass every time you want to look at them or does it really stay clear without wiping?
@TazawaTanks
@TazawaTanks 5 жыл бұрын
I have to wipe the glass whenever I film or watch them. Once I wipe it, it stays clear for about an hour. Thanks for checking back in Joe!

As always Zenzo, a great video. I've been in the hobby for almost 70 years but I still find your mudskipper tanks to be mesmerizing !! You asked for fish suggestions. In the remote past I remember seeing a 6 foot square open tank with mudskippers on the island part and archer fish in surrounding brackish water. The archer fish must have been happy and healthy in their brackish water as they would put on quite a show "shooting down" live crickets when placed on a high wire over the tank. Also, I have a question: if I come back in another life, I would choose it to be a mudskipper in your tank. What an easy life, especially in San Francisco, rent free no less!! At any rate, since they appear so content, would they, can they breed in captivity ??

Thanks for the nice comment and compliment! As far as breeding, I am not aware of anyone doing so in captivity. I will definitely look into it!

The African mudskippers eat a variety of foods, from live insects to freeze dried and frozen foods like shrimp, bloodworms and mealworms. The Indian mudskippers eat a similar diet, but have also eaten flake food. They are too small for some of the food like the freeze-dried mealworms.

Mangrove's would be the best plant but they tend to grow slowly.The root system will help with nitrates and phosphates but you don't have any of those problems.Yes they grow large and for the most part the leaves are on the top part of the plant so it's not like you will actually see it inside the tank.You will basically see a small tree with 2 to 3 leafs.Nothing special to look at
