re. separating an author from their work- I can't, really. If I read a book and love it and then it turns out the author's a jerk, it doesn't taint my reading experience but I'm unlikely to buy more of their books because I don't wanna support that. If I hear about an author being a jerk before I read any of their books, I probably won't pick them up.

Buying from second hand bookshops and charity shops is a way around this if you really want to read a book but hate the author. Borrow from libraries as well! That way your money goes to a good place. Also if the author is dead check to see where the money goes to. I’ve come across this problem *twice* when I was halfway through a series before and it’s infuriating. You want to know what happens next but definitely don’t want to support the author.

Yea same. Though, especially if the author is still alive and writing, then I don't wanna support them. If they're dead maybe it doesn't matter that much. But I'm just immediately turned off from even trying an authors books if I already know they're racist/homophobic etc.

In response to separating the author form their work for me it is a case by case scenario. There is really a lot of nuance to be had in these issues and I will admit I would have a harder time dismissing an all time favorite author if they did something bad than I would with an author I've never read anything from. It also depends on how bad I perceive the allegations against them are, which is very subjective. As an example I will mention Phillip Pullman who wrote His Dark Materials which is amazing. Lately I heard people accusing him of transphobia. I was honestly surprised because he just didn't seem like the kind of person who would do that but nevertheless I researched the issue. I found out he had made a comment that I didn't interpret as transphobic but that nevertheless was vague enough that I understood why someone else might make an argument for it being transphobic. As such I made the decision to continue reading his works because I still enjoyed him as an author. As another example the author you mentioned Marion Zimmer Bradley who committed inarguably more terrible crimes, there is no way in hell I could ever read or support such an author's work. I would feel complicit in a sense.

I think the topic of separating the author from their work is usually oversimplified. Writing is never separate from an author. An author's experiences, world view, and even sometimes deepest feelings influence their writing. Even when it's fiction, it's still a glimpse into the author's mind. You might be able to block out things you don't like about an author so that you can still enjoy their work, but in all honesty you can never actually separate an author from their work.

I wish I was able to somehow get The Kept Woman. I love Karin Slaughter novels (and was very happy to discover her with Pretty Girls, it is not her best novel but certainly got me hooked). As for separating the artist from his work, I actually try to do that since I believe the art should not be valued by the same criteria (that we value a human being) however I find it very hard to do. Luckily so far the writers whose work I enjoy seem to be nice people. However it is the film makers and actors I'm having trouble with. I used to love Woody Allen films, he was one of my all time favorite directors but now every time I wanted to watch a film of his, I find that I simply can't. But I'm trying to get over this since logically I think art should be separated from its maker.

If what I don't like is simply a difference in opinion, I'll still read and enjoy the book. I read the Mists of Avalon when they were published and were Bestsellers, and I knew nothing about the author. I'll take a look on what's about it, but the Avalon series was very good and Feminist, it's the Arthurs Saga from the POV of women and it's a pity it has gone down due to the author.
