There is a kind of beetle that feeds on rotting wood in houses, especially oak, I believe. I grew up in a house where there were some for a while, and we could clearly hear ticking behind the walls. Mum called it the Tick beetle so as not to scare me (long story) but I believe they are actually called Deathwatch beetles. Left untreated they can cause some potentially serious damage. This is in the UK. Perhaps that could account for the ticking?
