I feel like addiction to this particular platform is blown off a lot with “Well there’s lots of educational content!”. It’s easy to pick on Tiktok or Facebook but somehow KZbin gets a pass even though it’s the most addictive. You’re right it’s a HUGE source of procrastination

Very true! It's unfortunate because it could mean that there may be lots of people that could be addicted to KZbin, but would be in denial. I suspect, some of the time, most people would blow off KZbin addiction if they are content creators themselves and would either have their own vested interest not to address it (save for a few content creators like Lauren), or they don't wish to sound hypocritical. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Exactly! I keep convincing myself that it's still okay to open it up again because there's so much content in terms of self-help and academics. As much as that is indeed true, there's enough and more ways to keep yourself occupied here without even realising it. Definitely helps to see that a lot of y'all feel the same way about it.

Try to observe your behaviors towards it. Identify why you use it and how it triggers you to watch youtube. Example: 1. (why) I use youtube because I cope with it to relieve from stress. 2. (trigger) I urge myself to watch youtube because I have a habit of waking up and opening the youtube app. When I figured out the reasons and cues of my addiction. I began to make strategies against it. I do recommend doing a detox first with a friend. That really helped me. Before I used to do a social media detox independently and I always fail. When I did it with a companion it was exciting. My detox became successful.

I feel you. I was at the exact same place you are (or were?) not too long ago. Things only started getting better as soon as I opened up about it to people I trust and then started seeking professional help. I will soon be admitted to rehab. In the meantime, a good way to get this somewhat under control is to not rely on self control, but have exterior factors limiting your YT usage. Here's what I tried: - install a plugin that blocks KZbin after a certain amount of time and during the night. used to work for a while, until my addiction was strong enough to work around it - Block all internet access via the wifi-router for all my devices during the night. Works like a charm. - install a plugin that hides the feed and recommended videos, works pretty well for me.

It’s late at night and I’ve just realized that I’m addicted to KZbin. I really can’t remember a day that has gone by that I haven’t watched it. It has literally taken over my life. I swear all of a sudden I’m on the platform without even realizing it and don’t even know what I’m doing there. I feel like I want to be on the platform instead of talking to people sometimes. I kid you not there have been days where I clocked in 10 + hrs of being on the platform and yet I can’t get enough of it. To be honest the least amount of time that I used it have probably been 3.5 hrs since the year and a half that I’ve been tracking my screen time. I think the addiction started ever since I got a chronically ill, I was depressed and I needed a way out. I guess KZbin in a way became my drug of coping with my new way of life. It made me forget about my sorrows and gave me joy. At least that’s what I thought. I’ve been noticing that I’m becoming nervous and anxious out of the blue.. I noticed that my thinking has gone noticeably down. For instance when I’m talking about something I suddenly forget what I’m talking about. I definitely noticed my attention span has gone down to the ground. I’ve been trying to read but I can’t finish all but a couple of chapters before I get bored. As a matter of fact whenever I start getting bored of something I end up here all the time. I seriously can’t remember not even a single day when KZbin wasn’t in my life for the past 8 years. Even on vacations I was watching the damn thing. I think I’m probably one of the most addicted people on earth. I wouldn’t wish this on anyone. I feel like it’s a necessity to be here at this point because if I don’t I start feeling bad and If I’m here I’m here for too long I feel bad anyways. I know and I realize now that this is something very serious that has to be handled immediately in my life. I know that I have to stop feeling sorry for myself and how things have turned out in my life. I know that this will be a long long and challenging road ahead of me but by god I will push through and beat this. I want to be free again, free from these invisible chains that I have created. I know that I will overcome this. Starting tomorrow my journey begins.

It's even harder when you see people who are not addicted to YT accomplishing their goals and living their best life every single day. Some of them spend a lot of time on Facebook and Instagram but for some reason it doesn't affect their life as much as KZbin does with me. I would like to open a YT channel but now I'm scared it could worsen my addiction even as a content creator. Thank you so much for this video 💕✨🌺

I really understand where you're coming from. Screen addictions come in many forms and while I don't think everyone has one, I really believe most do suffer in varying degrees. Maybe it's not obvious externally, but I'm sure most are struggling more than you realise. You're not weak, alone or weird. At all. It's very common. I think it's really wise of you to question whether or not to start a channel in terms of worsening your addiction. It may at times be a struggle. However, if that is something you really want to do, I would encourage you to explore that possibility. Ultimately it could bring you a lot of joy, you would just need to be really aware of the time you were spending consuming on the platform. If you do start a channel and would like any advice as to how I navigate that particular issue, let me know 😊

You can take a more useful approach to social media which is probably what these other people are doing: Plan ahead how you intend to use youtube. Example: I will use youtube for 45mins/day; I will only watch educational content on weekdays, and documentaries on weekends. ⬆️Something like this⬆️ If you plan ahead, you are more likely to stick to the plan. If you don't plan, you are very likely to binge.

I think KZbin addiction messes up your life more than any other sns because on apps like Instagram and Facebook, you mostly see people you know living their best (fake) lives and you feel detached and alone and it makes you feel shitty about yourself. So its relatively easy to quit these apps. But on yt, you see what seems to be a more raw and real side of people you actually like/look up to, and it creates a sense of community. And in the real world, most people you come across won't like what you like, so it's hard to relate to them, but on youtube, it's so easy to find like minded people who get you. So it's hard to break this addiction, because it makes you feel good and creates this illusion of being included and instills a sense of belonging within you, and makes you feel like you're living in the world you wanna live in, and like you are a part of a community you actually enjoy. But at the end of the day, yt is just another sns, with carefully curated feeds and algorithms. Once the screen is gone, you're left with nothing at all. It's so important (and yet highly difficult) that we step outta this lie and live in the real world.

Bcz of its relatability n how i just wouldn’t feel insecure since we choose to follow random ppl whereas on Instagram there’s envy factor. But too much of a good thing is also bad and this where yt addiction creeps in

I've felt exactly like this the other day. I felt so connected and engaged with this one youtuber in one of his videos but I realized that he's not talking directly to me... he's talking to a camera, an audience that they themselves probably never met. It's sort of a stupid realization but a realization nonetheless. It sucks to know that although yt videos make you feel so say "connected", in reality it's not true. In reality, these youtubers aren't my friends but still relatable. We don't know each other and yet something connects us. It's strange really if you take a step back and really look at it all.

I’ve been addicted to KZbin for years now. It’s that bad that last week I spent 36 hours just watching videos. KZbin addiction has been one of my biggest problems in my life. It is even worse than gaming, though gaming can also have as many bad effects as KZbin can, but the thing with KZbin is the fact that it can really influence in your life. As an example, you procrastinate a lot, as well as neglecting the more important things in life (family, school, exercise, etc.). Gaming is just a way to escape, when you have to deal with real life situations. All in all, I think KZbin addiction 'can' indeed be cured but for that, you need to have the strength and self-discipline to do so. I had a lack of self-discipline for nearly 3 years but this year I've been progressing further. I began to read books and I also began to exercise, which I still do to this day and they do help me forget about KZbin and make me want to realise, how the outside world really is. I hope that helps you just as much. 😊

My addiction to KZbin stemmed from an unmet and unfulfilled aspect of my life. For me, it was at its worst when I felt lost in life, without direction and just simply didn’t know what I wanted to do and I couldn’t see a clear future for myself. So, I feel that unless I actually addressed that unmet aspect, my addiction wasn’t going anywhere. Because, even if I completely stopped using KZbin, I would still want to distract myself from these feelings and whatever else was going on, and I would therefore turn to other methods of distraction. My advice would be to figure out what it is you want in your life or what is bothering you that you feel you are looking to distract yourself from. Once I figured this out, I turned inward and really just thought about what makes me really happy and things that I would really like to do. These can be completely unrelated to whatever you’re struggling with, the point being to just find more time to be happy and be present. I started surfing and finding more time to paint, read and play games with my family. I also put more into my creative outlets like this channel. I still don’t know what I want to do completely and don’t have a ton of direction, but simply taking time to be intentional, rather than distracted, did wonders for me. We shouldn’t be spending every moment of our lives ‘being productive’ or binge consuming. But, we can find the time to really enjoy ourselves. I hope this helps and I wish you all the best 🦋🌈

And do you know what my first thought was? I wanted to see it again, so the first thing that popped up in my head was to rewind the situation. You all know how on youtube you double click the left side of the screen to do that and I literally was about to do that gesture just in real life 😐 I felt so embarrassed of myself honestly, this shit can't be healthy 😭

I need to join the quit game. I’m realizing how much I’m tired of making other people loads of money while sitting bc here accomplishing nothing in the process. I am also tired of seeing how thousands and thousands of people wasting their life posting comments to channels that don’t read them or give a sh**+. What a terrible life making comment after comment about content other commenters just watched as well so why comment the obvious?????People have a serious mental health problem with seeing how much attention their comment receives and how it affects their own perception of validation. It’s a sad life living that way and I don’t want to be apart of it anymore. It’s a colossal waste of life. I’m going to break the habit. Every one else should also.

For me it is horrible. After i study for 2 hours, a part in me would say that yeah you can do more! Study more! Extend the study session! BUT BUT BUT my other dominating part says take a break and watch an KZbin video for refreshing your mind. Somewhere i know that watching video wont refresh my mind at all. All it is gonna do is regret. But still i watch. Even when i feel that i am wasting my time i would still continue to watch it. Even watching video, i always worry about my body weight (i am overweight which caused some syndrome) i know i gotta lose my weight. I should stop watching these in order to score good. But all these things are just in my mind from last 3 years. Goals i have today are same as i had 3 years ago. Still i took no actions towards them. And the worst part is i know that i am addicted to youtube, but a part of my mind response me that it is okay to watch, you just studied for 20 minutes you deserve this thing. And when i would not watch a single video i start thinking that am i missing something? Other people also watch youtube (i leave in hostel so i have an idea about my friends schedules so they use youtube for like 5-6 hours), so it is fine for me too. I know it is addiction but what if i missed out something?

From my own experience, the most important thing to do in order not to feel the urge to watch KZbin is to get a good night of sleep. This means having dinner early, going to sleep early (like 10:00 - 10:30 pm) and, most importantly, NO screens 1 to 2h before going to bed. I would suggest to use the time to read/stretch instead, or for other relaxing activities. This helped me a lot, the amount of willpower (and feeling of wellbeing in general) that you get from a good night of sleep is incomparable to anything else. I know it will be hard to detach from the pc/smartphone, but the next day will be waaay easier. Also, great video! We should start looking at screen addiction more seriously, glad that there are people like you speaking up!

Why did you stop listening to music? I’m curious, cuz that sounds so sad and normally music is a good thing! If you want any recommendations for certain genres (if u only quit a certain genre cuz u didn’t vibe with it), let me know; I love alll types from classic rock, old school hip hop, electronic, alternative rock, grunge, punk rock, new school rap- both conscious rap and ignorant rap, lol; funk, classical, blues, some pop music, r&b, jazz.... I hope you can enjoy music again, it truly touches the soul, when you find music that resonates with you! Also, the birthday and Christmas thing is interesting- I have a friend who doesn’t celebrate holidays, he just doesn’t see a point in it- is that why you “quit” celebrating? When we talked about it I said to him “so what if there’s no point in it; why not take an opportunity to celebrate and have an extra special day? Literally why would you purposely choose to shun celebration and happiness and acknowledgement and gratitude?? Unless it’s purely because you don’t like the consumeristic side of holidays, BUT it’s up to you how you celebrate! Plenty of people celebrate Christmas without the consumeristic focus on presents- it’s about family, joy, connection, gratitude... same with birthdays; you don’t have to focus on gifts, in fact you can “ban” presents if you want (although I don’t see why; maybe I’m biased because the people in my life pick the most thoughtful gifts they know I’ll love and use; but again, it’s about celebrating another year in your life, the experiences you’ve had that year, whether good or bad- many people don’t make it to whatever age you’re at! Sorry for this rant, lmao, reading your comment just made me sad because half of the “addictions” sounded like things that are positive for most people!

Hi Amal! I am so sorry you're feeling this way, but oh my goodness I resonate so much with what you're saying. I am a freelance editor and prior to covid worked for myself mostly, which meant spending a lot of time at home, on a screen, and this is when my addiction really took over. It's such a difficult setting to have control and I honestly felt so poorly about myself as well. You are not alone in this. At all. Tonight I actually have a video going live sharing a tool I have very recently found that has (so far) had the most success in breaking this addiction! I'm just finishing off the edit now so if you have a chance to look at it after it goes live, I would highly recommend 😊 Aw thank you for your kind words regarding my videos. My boyfriend shoots 90% of my content so most of the credit goes to him there, but I have recently switched over to a Lumix S5 (prior to this I was using a Song A7s mIII) which I LOVE! The colours really seem to pop; we shoot most of my stuff in the natural setting and my favourite lenses to use are the Sigma 50mm, Sigma 18-35mm & Lumix 70-200mm 🦋

I find myself being addicted to KZbin, before it was social media and now I've found myself using it a lot less. For KZbin, it's been my TV replacement (as I don't watch TV) and music player but I'm going to try my own version of a 'detox'; as I use it a lot on my iPad I've decided to delete the app and just use it via laptop only for watching videos. I do have an extension called Unhook for Google Chrome which allows me to use KZbin in a less distracting way; I find that I can focus on a video (whereas on iPad I skip videos due to the recommendations popping up and such). For my phone I have KZbin vanced which has a picture in picture feature so I can listen to videos like podcasts (which is less distracting as I don't use YT on my phone much). I'm going to give it a try and just slowly wean myself off as I really want to minimise screen usage more.

I had the exact same problem, I deleted the KZbin app off my phone and its helped a lot. I think the main problem is with phones "mini computers" we can take them everywhere and they are always with us. You can just take your phone out of your pocket wherever you are and start a KZbin binge. I only watch KZbin on my computer now so at least I have a barrier, because my computer isn't always with me like a phone.

I tried telling family, and also my therapist. (A couple therapists, actually.) No one has ever listened, no one took me seriously. Long term, it feels like a death of self. I guess that's my fault for expecting help or understanding, but people would understand if it was literally any other addiction or self harm. Yet they can't understand how throwing away 5-10 hours a day, pretty well every day for *years*, is a problem. I honestly hate being alone and generally feel like life is out of my control, and I can barely make it 3 days at most without youtube or other internet bingeing. I get that I have a choice, each moment of each day, but I honestly cant seem to stop making the same choices over and over. To the point that I've somehow convinced myself that any other usage of time that isnt work related is a pointless waste of time that makes me feel guilty. So I just go back to watching youtube. This is so blatantly, obviously not normal, I just think it's a joke that no one I've talked to understands.

Hi there, I'm so sorry you're going through this. I am not a therapist or qualified to give any professional advice of any sort, but I hear you. I truly believe it will be properly recognised as a problem/ addiction in the very near future. I'm surprised it's not yet widely accepted. I would suggest you don't try and completly cut it out, because that will probably result in you going back to binge. My suggestion would be this: allocate some time each day (set hours) where you allow yourself to freely watch KZbin, guilt-free. Allow yourself to enjoy it and watch videos you actually want to watch, not just things that are there. Then, when it's time to stop, pop out and do whatever work you need to do, or spend the rest of your day however you like. Before starting this, have a backup distraction. I'm so sorry you feel that the time you spend not working is pointless. But, the more (proper) rest we give ourselves (not just watching YT and feeling terrible about it) the more effective we will be and our work will improve. Because we have given ourselves rest. No one can operate at 100% all the time. The most successful people rest, a lot. So, when you have had your YT time for the day and then feel the urge to go back on, turn to your back-up plan. This is an activity that distracts you from whatever you'd like to be distracted from, but it's not on a screen. It could be reading, exercising/ going for a walk. cooking, learning a new skill/ something you've wanted to do for ages, anything really. I have recently been re-reading the Harry Potter books, an absolute favourite of mine and it's been wonderful getting off the screen. Finally, I would suggest downloading this (free) chrome extension: Distraction Free KZbin. I have made a video all about it in this link of this video description, but it basically gets rid of many of KZbin's distracting/ addictive qualities. This was an absolute game-changer for me and have since spent the least amount of time on KZbin in so, so long. I hope this helps and I really do wish you all the best. Please don't give up on therapists, I'm so sorry you haven't found the right one yet, but there will be someone out there who will understand you and take you seriously. 🌈🦋

I am in a similar place and I am not happy about the way that it pretty much rules my life. Maybe I am just addicted to taking brakes as I have no cravings for KZbin/media when I am with my friends or anything like. But maybe spending too much time consuming media is the origin of my lack of mental endurance causing me now to need that many brakes. I don't feel like I am going to get my life on track very soon. At the moment what has been the result is that I try to optimize the rest of my life to be able to spend enough time in my comfort zone. Otherwise I am just feeling terrible. And as bad as it is I am somewhat glad that it is mostly KZbin. When I was spending time on Instagram I would really end up feeling stupid (I could really feel my brain rotting) and kinda depressed while also not getting things done. With KZbin at least I am seeing interesting things and learing stuff while procastinating. I have deleted pretty much all social media except KZbin and this way I am at least not activly decaying from spending time on the internet.

I've been using KZbin since its inception. I had a hookah channel long before monetization and when having 3,000 subscribers was huge. It was somewhere I could find a video on how to install a dishwasher. Beauty KZbinrs taught me how to apply liquid eyeliner sitting in the floor of their closets with drugstore makeup. Now nothing is shocking or impressive. Nothing is niche. Now I find myself mindlessly consuming content, scrolling through comments, wishing my life looked like the hip content creators'. I can't fall asleep without my earbuds in and a video running. It's a huge problem.

This really hit home Edit: If you're using Firefox there's an add on called "Unhook" that lets you block distractions on KZbin like recommendations, home screen feed etc. I just got it to try it out.

Thank you soo very much for this video. After wasting a lot of time on social media, I was finally able to quit it after watching Yes Theory's video (highly recommended video). But quitting youtube was technically not possible, as I am a computer science student and youtube is my library. But it happens to be a one with free limitless entertainment too and that Dopamine fellow ... just doesn't let us think. This extension idea will finally help me. Thanks again.

Hey Ketan 😊 What video was this? I'd love to check it out! Yeah I feel you, I can't particularly quit YT either, but sometimes quitting isn't the solution as we will just move onto another addiction. I really think that if we can find ways to manage and work on our addictive tendencies (like working with this extension) we will be much more able to tackle any addictions in the future. I wish you all the best! ☀️

Talking about tracking time, there is another extension named "WebTime Tracker" which I use that gives the stats for time spent of all websites daily. It helps with the self-realization and improvement part.

It's harder for me currently to break my addiction as people who i have immediate access to (for some reason I'm terrified to do an activity outside my house if I'm alone, i feel bored, and lonely, and stupid, i don't even want to go to an aisle at a store a few aisles away from someone i know.) because they are all deeper into electronic addiction than me. All my friends are too far away to help, i don't know how I'll get out.

Hey there 😊 I'm so sorry you're feeling this way. I am not a professional in any way, but I would like to suggest moving your body everyday. Invite one or more of your friends to do an online workout class (I'm not sure on your location/ pandemic restrictions), or go for a walk with them, swim, ride, run, rock climb, yoga - anything really! Exercise is incredible for our moods and if it can also be a spent with the people we love (and get them off their technology), it's even better. Do you have a dog or another pet? Maybe you could go for a walk with just you and your dog? That way, you're not alone but it gives you the time and space to just get out of the house and do what you want (whether that's listening to the music you love, or bringing some food and having a bit of a picnic or read). I would also like to suggest this: it sounds like you may benefit from professional advice. I have seen psychologists in the past to help me work through difficult personality traits and really tough times in my life. I cannot begin to express how much they have helped me and how freeing the process can be. If you'd like, you can even bring along a close friend or family member to the session to either wait outside or come in with you. I hope that you can see the value it sounds like many others around you see in you ☀️🌈
