The thing is that a lot of the time, there's a contractual purity thing involved with women involved in Japanese showbiz. Fans saw how people flipped out over the idea of Ai getting pregnant. Not only was it an out of wedlock pregnancy when she was just 16ish, but idols are supposed to cultivate an image of purity and "girl next door" vibes, and pregnancy doesn't mesh with that. It's sad, but it's true.

I can somewhat understand both sides, the cyberbullies and the mother. FYI, I am not defending the CBs, I'm just stating what the thought process might have been to allow a more unbiased viewpoint. If you are gonna reply to this, read everything first. From what it looks like, it can be percieved as the mother making a big deal about something that happens in multiple animes, like if someone's relative or friend was to die from a public stabbing and then they watch Reincarnated as a Slime and then complain to the creators about the similarity, they might feel as if the person is complaining for the sake of it and get upset at that seeing it as an attack against something they love (being Reincarnated as a Sime) thus getting all defensive about it. In a situation like that, it would be better if both parties don't complain since many anime have people getting stabbed and complaining about it wouldn't help much if at all. However, this is a far more different situation. In this situation of Oshi no ko and the mother, we see that according to the mother, from the situation that Akane was in to the messages she was receiving, how it was practically one to one, how the only real difference was that Akane was saved by Aqua while her daughter wasn't. We even see the creators admit to using her daughter's story as inspiration (though we don't know much more past that). In a situation like that, the mother has every right to complain and be suspicious especially from the recency of her daughter's passing. I understand the mindset of the CBs however that in no way excuses their actions, especially given the parallels.

If it were the case that the only similarity was the suicide or the jumping off a bridge, then I'd somewhat understand why people would be upset at her complaints. Doesn't make their actions right, but it does explain things a little. In this situation though, it's basically a replica according to the information given, just different people, different entertainment professions and the fact that Akane was saved. The mother honestly does have a right to complain if it is the case that all those messages in that episode (or a large portion) was ripped from the whole occurance with her daugher. This. Hana's case did make very large waves, but she is by no means the only one and she is not the most recent or the most well known. The pointed call for the inclusion of content warning is valid IMO, but I think in her grief Hana's mother forgets that she is not the only mother to have had this happen, nor is Hana's case all that notable or rare. That's a horrible truth, but it means that the situation in the show bearing resemblance to Hana's situation is likely coincidental and not biographical. I can think of no fewer than five kpop idols, a couple actresses, several reality TV stars, and a couple star athletes for whom the situation is extremely similar. I don't watch Oishi no Ko or really much anime at all, but this situation comes up in traditional western TV all the time. That's why you'll see the "People and events in this media are purely fictional and are not intended to bear any resemblance to real life people or events" warnings at the beginning of many shows or even books. Even the 'words' she talks about are very common words and on the internet, people take what they hear and repeat it in such a way that those aren't indication enough that it has been lifted from Hana's story. I don't think there's ever a reason to direct the kind of vitriol and hatred some fans have directed at Hana's mother, period. However, I do think that the makers of the show could easily not have done anything wrong in this situation and that her feelings are just that- her feelings, and not the kind of mean spirited conspiracy to "use Hana's legacy for profit" she somewhat insinuated it was. It's a serious episode about a serious topic that was (as I understand it) handled really well and respectfully. Hana's mother's emotional response is understandable... but it shouldn't bear any impact on the show or the fandom at large, except maybe the valid criticism that a content warning be added to future broadcasts.

That said, someone needs to explain to the mother that what Akasaka Aka did was really shedding light on the issue, it has nothing to do with profiting from her death. I'm sure the vast majority of fans learned a lot from that arc, deeply sympathized with her daughter's unfortunate case and condemned those responsible for it. I wish her mother could understand that.

As a mother I can absolutely understand why she didn't like it. It's one thing to tell a similar story it's another to be so precise to a person who went through that and whose family is still grieving. My only problem I don't think what Akane went through wouldn't have been as powerful without seeing those hurtful words. As much as I am on the mother's side I also understand in order to tell a story that hurts you have to go to a place that hurts. Unfortunately those texts you see when Akane is scrolling threw comments are the exact same comments other's have gotten. What I'm saying is the internet may be vast, but their levels of hating on people remain the same. What her daughter experienced I guarantee someone else has been through. The mother has every right to speak out against it. But, the internet being full of no thought losers don't see it as a mother speaking her peace, but as some person going against their anime. Which is fucking disgusting. You can respect someones opinion and wishes you don't have to be a complete asshat about it.

What do you mean by 'stop making this comparison'? To stop giving exposure? Because stories like this have to be shown to the public so humanity can try to learn from mistakes (humanity and learn from mistakes, what a joke). And movies / books is the best way to give this needed exposure. It's one thing if this was fully copied from the mother's dauther's story and another if it was only inspired by this. Even tho, I am not a lawyer to decide. Millions of people have their grandparents died because of both world wars and we have a lot of movies about both of them, including some very uncomfortable like 'All Quiet on the Western Front'. I am pretty sure there are some people who are uncomfortable about this topic too. But that's a story, nothing less. And we should learn from it, not hide it. And this topic should not be about the mother's complainеs and if they should be satisfied or not, but about the harassment that it caused.

Although highlighting these stories is important I think there's still something to be said having inspiration to real people who existed recently enough that their loved ones are still alive. My view on this situation will always be: the mother has every right to be upset, but NO ONE ELSE involved does. Unless they directly knew the girl, they have no power weighing in on a complicated matter like this. Oshi no ko's portrayal is rightfully tragic to the mother but everyone except her only has the basic right to criticize the show's decisions. None of the harassers are owed anything and they should be ashamed of their actions. The best we can do is stop comparing a fictional character to a real life tragedy and actually learn the lesson that episode was trying to teach. I do believe that Hana Kimura inspired a substantial part of Akane’s story. While I do think that the writer was regardless aiming to make an episode about a showbiz character attempting suicide, the writing for this chapter started right when Hana Kimura’s story was getting the most attention in the news. There’s so many very close similarities like the fact that the reality show incident that Hana received so much hate for was her slapping another cast member and Akane received all the hate for the exact same thing. Plus, the fact that the comments they showed in the chapter/episode were exact copies of comments that Hana’s relatives and friends stated that she got in news articles and interviews.

Hana Kimura comitted suicide on May 23, 2020, cause of death was determined as Hydrogen Sulfide inhalation (not jumping from a bridge) Oshi No Ko chapter 25 (Outrage) was release in the weekly young jump on November 19, 2020 The investigation concluded that it was a suicide in December 2020 Basically although the general public could have assume at the time that it was a suicide, the investigation was still ongoing when the chapter in question of Oshi No Ko was being written. Although it is a very sad experience and no parent should see their kid die before them, my personal opinion is that the author did not copy paste Hana`s suicide into the story. There is way too many difference and the author was depicting how internet can become the cause of suicide very quickly. There is a lot of suicide in Japan every year (approx 21000 suicide in 2020), it is a very very sensitive topic there. Since it was in the news, yes he could have been inspired by the incident, but she was not the first and only reality show star to commit suicide after bullying. But the goal of the story is to attack those exact behavior so yes there will always going to be similitude with real suicide.

Even if you think what you are saying has grounds for being true (that suicides like this one will continue to happen so it begs the question at what point do you stop creating a story because it bothers/hurts a group of people. Kinda like how true crime is being criticized by families of the victims. Stories like the titanic only worked because it was such an old tragedy.) Good on you Joey for covering this. I haven't watched anime at all in the past year or so (keep forgetting to catch up), but it's of great importantance to have these stories covered. Anyone who is partaking in this atrosity of cyber bulling, anyone for that matter, let alone the poor mother, should really take inventory of themselves and take the time to read what they are saying to others, before and after the fact, of getting involved in any capacity of a controversy like this. It's horrible that people are just so selfish that they probably don't even realize just how hurtful and cruel they are being and are just trying to jump on the bandwagon, "for the lols", as most would say. There's an appropriate time and place for everything, but seriously, whether it's related to this incident, or something completely different, before sending out messages, please, just take a second to think about how it would make YOU feel if the message that your about to send to someone you probably don't even know the first thing about IRL was being sent to YOU instead. I'm not trying to act all high and mighty here, we all make mistakes, but together, we can just take a few moments out of our day to day life to really consider if sending a message to someone else, especially when you have no involvement nor any context to what's happening, is really such a good idea. Put yourself in the other person's shoes, as I said earlier. You may be upset at the time, so before sending anything negative to anybody, just wait before hitting send, and come back to it later. If you still feel that it's appropriate, or perhaps something that you feel that you need to speak up about (hopefully only in the context that pertains to your actual real life, and NOT some stranger that you don't know), then go ahead and send it then. It's easy to get caught up in the heat of the moment, but just take some time to relax, then rethink if it's truly necessary to send that message. This applies to anything and everyone, the world would be a much better place if we could find it in ourselves to just be a little bit more kind to others, and try to be considerate to their feelings. Sorry for the wall of text, but basically, TL:DR: - Don't grief people you don't know - Try to consider how a message would make you feel before just spontaneously sending it - If you're upset over whatever's on your mind, walk away from the situation for a bit before sending a mean or rude message. A lot of times we get caught up in the heat of the moment, but sometimes it's better just to be the bigger person by not saying anything disrespectful, hateful, mean, ect. If you don't have something nice to say, just don't say anything. It shows that you're the more mature person, if nothing else. My heart goes out to all of the people involved in not only this (especially the mother), but to anyone struggling with similar issues. Don't be afraid to ask for help, guys, seriously. Some might tell you it's a weakness to need other people to help you, but I can tell you personally, that's just simply not true. We ALL need other people in our lives sometimes, humans are social creatures, after all. Honestly, the stronger person will be the ones that are able to ask for help, because it's really hard sometimes. We all have times like that though, so as I've said, don't allow yourself to suffer and know that there are plenty of loving people out there that only want to help you, just as much as unfortunately there are cretins and creeps that will try to do the opposite. Never give up hope, and I hope this message reaches someone who just needed that little push in the right direction. You are worth it, and you are loved. Don't let anyone else ever tell you otherwise. ❤

This is why I stopped liking anime, people do a lot of vile things for the sake of fictional characters, for example bulling a 30-year-old woman for drawing an NSFW drawing of Bakugo with a Teen OC, which is ironic because BNHA fandom is even more gross with their characters especially making NSFW artwork suggestive or not, even manga and writing stories.

i feel awful for her family.. i can't imagine the stress that episode induced. maybe it really should've had a content warning at the start. can someone help me understand - what is wrong with using a similar situation in a fictional story? like Joey mentioned, this is not a rare thing that happens in the industry. shouldn't it be shown in media to make people aware of what's happening?

Ummm.... There's nothing wrong apparently(Depends on who you ask)?... We do it with any and all tragedies but there's a catch to it, the double edged sword c-word; Context ⬆️ supports timing/place/space. That supports the climate we're in at certain times of human events. Like Nazis, slavery, documentaries etc it was a cool thing till we were like nah it wasn't supposed to be but it was at that time for some still and ongoing...we learn and fall and repeat. The mother is ofc valid in her grief and the author is I hope Teaching us the Morals why it's wrong to do that/ the incidents. But who's right and/or wrong...well that's on us individually and as a group to decide and things go on repeat... such as life. There's no way that it isn't related to the topic, automatically connected just like other cases but just like crazy documentaries the ppl and family are hurt and the story is told...who told it, why and wat was there intentions, who benefits from this, entertainment ⬆️ the reader/watcher/listener/seer companies/moneymaker etc. The only w/l is death at the end; that was promised long ago. Oh by the way that content warning ⚠️ with number! and or tags is always a welcome to me, helps out a lot to allow us to say yay/nay and move on. And perhaps verification step for a second warning if they couldn't be bothered to read/see the ⚠️ sign("Are you sure about that!?"Yes/No). Like Made in Abyss. Amazing but...........damn... Though now I have a question. These creators specifically japan(Dieing/low population), I wonder what there thoughts are in The END when they-as in author/artist-animators/actor-voice etc. Die. They work themselves literally to death for our entertainment. Are they hoping to be remembered for there achievements? I really wanna ask "why they do as they doing?" And how it effects them like this topic. Are the answers always that simple "it's my passion, achievements, end goal,..."

There ain't anything wrong and the mom was overboard and just lashing out mindlessly. Her statement should be corrected but not bullied in turn.

Im surprised her mother came out against it. For one they didnt glorify suicide or anything like that. Two it brought a ton more awareness to these kinds of things happening and three Akane got saved. But harrassment is never ok or the answer

Yeah but it's still a painful reminder of a traumatic event irl, that they didn't ask the family if it was ok to use. Ofc, there's no guarantee that they intentional stole the story, but had they done that, it would be just a little insensitive, regardless of intent.

IRL Akane isn't saved.

I know this a few months old now, but I wanted to add this is a big problem in the k-pop fandom as well. “Fans” have been attacking k-pop artists for daring to be spotted with a Starbucks. If they delete the photos, they are demonized for not groveling enough. When called out on the bullying - the “fans” say the artists deserve it for thinking wrong and not accepting their “education”. Some are going so far as to say the artists should commit suicide as they don’t deserve better. This within days of Korean actor Lee Sun-Kyun committing suicide after relentless bullying from the police and netizens. They are the most toxic people.

My heart goes out to Hana Kimura's mother. She deserves to have her emotions and not be bullied for them. Media will not stop for her, nor should it, but this material has been incredibly thoughtful about this subject. Just leave the mother alone. Leave the authors alone. No one is in the wrong except for the people who are going out there to bully the mother. Those people are vile and are not accepted by the rest of us.
