It's just the fact that the anime/manga industry is so big in Japan, that when someone involved in it gets caught, it's a news story. Just like if a famous actor does something similar, there will be news articles all over the place. However, when it's just some random salaryman doing it, it's not a news story because no one cares about "random salaryman."

Something that's even more disgusting is that these kinds of horrific acts are FETISHIZED, especially when the victim is a minor. It has become so normalized in Japanese internet communities that it has been brought to real life, like some gateway drug. I visit Japan frequently because I have family there. When I visit in the summer, I often wear shorts or skirts because of how hot and humid the climate can get. I often get stares towards my legs when I do. I can easily be identified as a minor. I also frequent short school visits, as well. One time, over the announcements, the school issued caution to female students because they had discovered a stalker following a girl to and from school. This was apparently commonplace. Japan needs change. These kinds of things cannot be dismissed as normal. Childhoods should not be lived in fear of harassment.

I mean, of how much I've heard this is a problem from random people, I'm sure this is particularly an issue in Japan, but issues like this are typically under reported, if not the entire world, but at least I can say in the US. The story has to be excessively gruesome or scandalous to make the mainstream news (like a famous coach or a serial killer/kidnapper... I believe the last major story that made national news I could remember was about kids being chained up in a dungeon like environment, and that was lead more with child abuse even though there were also sexual abuse allegations mentioned in passing), and even then it's often only during elections to report on politicians running for office. Meanwhile when it is reported on local news, it's often in passing, talking about a lawsuit of something that happened from years in the past that didn't make the news much at all, or it's a scandal with a teacher or teacher adjacent career. Often their career isn't even mentioned if it isn't relevant. I feel like if that guy worked at Pixar, for example, we'd never know (unless he was a big celebrity at the company like John Lasseter was). I just watched a story about a Denver Police Officer in Colorado, US where he was soliciting sex from a 14 year old minor, got caught and was now found guilty and sentenced to... probation, meaning he basically goes to rehab and once cleared gets this wiped from his record. My point being, I don't think this is an issue where people in power actually do care about. It's a lot of postering, it's a lot of bandaids, there seem to be no real attempts at dealing with these issues, specifically "Pedialyte" problems. (Cause it can't just be "Oh I'm so stressed out, I need to rape a child", it's a dangerous kind of fetish being dealt with)

Obviously I agree with what you’re saying, but I do think comments like “what is it about the anime and manga industry?!” is a bit dangerous to make. The only reason why we know about this case is because the dude is somewhat famous, and thus worth writing an article about. It’s not as if such crimes are exclusive to the anime and manga industry, and considering the sheer number of people in it, you couldn’t logically call it a common occurrence. Sadly, I've actually heard that there is a great deal of such behaviors all across Japan, including being assaulted on packed trains by predators and there isn't much systemic support at all there.
