Great videos :) Been wondering a lot about this --- How do you develop your own sound & style on the oboe? All oboe players sound unique of course (because of mouth shape, reeds, instrument etc), but how do you play with your own nuanced kind of playing? Do you think it is just something natural that we ourselves can't tell, or something to develop intentionally?

Could you talk about your orchestra career? And how does a typical week at the opera looks like? Would you choose this job again or would you go for sth completly different? And do you have students or do you only play in orchestra full time? And pro and cons of a career in classical music (in Germany)?

Could you do a reed making series? Just the basics of reed making. Probably starting with already gouged and shaped cane just so that beginners have an idea of how they'll start. Things like how to tie the reed, scraping techniques, clipping the tip, and making sure the reed is responding properly when you test it and how to make the little fixes when it doesn't. It would be really helpful. I was making my own under careful guidance for a while, but I never got to the point where I felt I could confidently do it on my own. And then I stopped for a while, and it was a long enough break to forget virtually everything I used to know.

It’s not exactly a question about playing the oboe but what should one look for when buying a new one given how big of an investment it can be.

Would you say that you have to have a specific personality to be successful in music? (ie being extroverted rather than introverted), and if so, how would you suggest that people gain confidence in the way that they present themselves on stage?

Could you talk to us about how to make the low notes speak (low B, Bb, C) without gurgling. I enjoy the fantastic videos (also, you are my teacher!) .. greetings from New York! You have given me excellent information about the low notes which I am working on - maybe the others would be interested in this.

Dear Marin, my questions are 1) what is your favourite whisky 🥃 and why? 2) when changing between notes in the 3rd octave dropping to the low notes in the first octave, do you have any tips for this? I spit the lowC a lot and it bugs me! 🥃🥃👍 cheers.

Do you have any tips for getting rid of tension in your body? I struggle with tension in my shoulders and hands, especially when I play the oboe for a long time. Thank you

What fingering do you use to go from C to C# in the lowest octave? Do you use the “banana-shaped” key at all?
@BeyondOboe2 жыл бұрын
I just slide the finger, the banana key is only meant to be use when you need to thrill. I have hardly ever used it.

Do you think I will have time to play oboe in college with the orchestra and take private lessons and make reeds and be a full-time nursing student?
@tesscongreve3893 жыл бұрын
Hello :) I’m a second year medical student and I play the oboe in an orchestra (not in these times, of course...), however I don’t make my own reeds. I’ve been told by some people that I won’t have time, or that it’s not worth it, but so far it’s been working out and I believe it’s very much worth it. Sometimes I need to focus on studying so I take a break from the oboe for a week or two before a big exam, and on some days I’m at school all day and there’s just no time to practice. But overall I think it’s very important to do something that you love that isn’t school related as a medical/nursing student to keep you sane. You might have to sacrifice other things in your life, but if you really love it and really want it, you will find the time. Good luck and take care

I wonder if you could talk a little about breathing. I am not ready to try circular breathing and have trouble getting through long passages of Baroque music with lots of eighth notes and sixteenth notes with no rests. What do you tell your students? Thanks
@lizzylambardo81033 жыл бұрын
That is definitely a struggle! Sometimes, what it's really about is controlling your breathing better. Believe it or not, but I'm an asthmatic oboist that has been playing for over 10 years. There's a feeling you need to get used to, and it's that "shit I'm out of breath!" feeling. Most of the time, you aren't actually out of breath, your body just thinks you are. You can push through that and go an extra bar or two. Take smaller breaths because oboe actually takes so little air to play. That feeling I was talking about? It means that you're running on "stale air" and your body wants a fresh breath. Chances are, you'll still have to breathe out before you take your next breath. Try an exercise where you sit or stand comfortably and exhale as much as you can. Then, without taking another breath in, bring your oboe to playing position and hold a note (i find that D5 usually works well) for as long as possible. You'll be surprised how long you can hold it. Another trick is to take quick breaths. Find a spot where a bar, or preferably a phrase, ends and cut off half of the last note and use the other half of the note to take a quick breath. Which means you could be taking the length of a 16th or 32nd note breath. Mark your music where you'll be taking these breaths, and always remember that you need to exhale before inhaling. You can't always do that with a quick breath. So you have to find lots of these little spots where it wouldn't be noticeable to take a breath. The first breath mark you put, mark an "e" or "o" over it for "exhale" or "out". Your second breath mark, put an "i" over it for "inhale." Continue to do that and mark your music and alternate inhales and exhales. When you practice those difficult passages, you need to practice your breathing until it becomes second nature. In order to do that, you can't begin at the beginning of your difficult passage. You need to start a phrase or two before your passage so that your body is practicing what it'll actually be like when you get to that passage during a full play through or performance. Difficult, yes. Impossible, no. You can do it! Good luck! Ps, sorry this comment is so long, but i hope it helps.

Can you play oboe with dentures
@chloeissa65223 жыл бұрын
I think so. You can play the oboe with braces and dentures are just like real teeth (except that they are not implanted into your skull), so I see no reason why you shouldn't be able to.

I love Marigaux, I was lucky to study 2 years in Paris and develop a personal relationship with them. My favorite model is the M2 for its unique qualities,even scale, mixes well in the orchestra and just makes me feel confident with it.
