IMO they're grabbing the back of the bait and swimming off to eat it. I'm fishing an actual river with current, only way I've figured to help is a treble trailer hook in the back of the bait. I think in your situation a strait hook with no weight and feeding out line after the initial bite for 30secs or a minute could work.

I hear what you're saying. I believe the best fisherman understand the behaviors of the fish they chase based on time of year and water conditions. They also use the tools they have to most effectively target them. The best combination of those two things make the best anglers. I don't think you can only be good at one or the other and be the best, so I'm trying to be good at both. With that being said, I'd be cool with all sonars dissappearing. I enjoy simple fishing the most.

Great video Spencer. Lots of action. Get yourself a dry erase board. That way it will be easier to keep track of the weights with the coinciding coloured float. That will help save time and you won't have to remember the weights during the tournament.

Undoubtely a pretty funny day, Spencer! Livescope is literally a game changer, but it can trap you around smaller fish. That low hook up ratio is weird, specially for catfish. I actually have a poor hook up ratio with short lines using Gamakatsu Big River hooks, which I consider good hooks for long casting and live bait fishing, but my species are totally different ones. I’m getting used to circle hooks nowadays. Hope to see more tournament days here, buddy. And it’s always good to see Skip and Woody at the boat. I believe they bring you luck. The crazy part about Livescope is it's just starting. Gonna be a lot of new tactics centered around it. It is funny how assumptions on hooks don't always match reality. Circle hooks bro. Thats why they weren’t hooking up. Try octopus hooks with a snell. Not octopus circle

Rough start but looks like the day got better. We always had issues fishing like that with circles style hooks and I ended up switching over to a traditional J style and Khale hook and the hookup rate was much much better. After that, I always kept a variety of J's and Khales in the box. Good to see Wood and Skip in the boat again as well!

I'm a deep sea fisherman and we don't use circle hooks for jigging because they are not designed for vertical jigging.. circle hooks only work great when fish runs away from you..when you strike up it doesn't work

In certain conditions a normal j hook works better than those circles! I've always preferred J Hooks over those circles honestly I still to this day think there's an argument to be made in certain scenarios!

I have figured out, from my kayak, all rods are pretty much too stiff for vertical catfishing suspending baits, especially in under 15ft in the river, I’ve had this problem MANY times. Rod gets BURIED, you crank down more then fight halfway up then poof they’re popped off. I’m hoping these short wisker seeker ice rods may be soft enough to do that job with circles. If not I’ll use them to play with j’s and khales and see what happens. And just have a good time with the little stubby things.

Hmmm, I never had much trouble with the kahle hooks, especially the old laser sharp Eagle claws, they always worked pretty good for me and my Paw up on the great Miami River, in Ohio, and back in the 90’s, the flatheads made a big comeback in that river, course I don’t know how it is now, I’ve heard tell there’s all kinds of people fishing our old holes. And there used to be some guys that would catch the flatheads out of there and then take them to the local paylakes and sell them, I’d just about bet their still doing that, that’s all a lot of fellars up there care about, fishing the paylakes. And there’s a lot of them up around Ohio, I was gonna say SW Ohio but their spread out all over Ohio. Indiana too! Haha, yeah those little flatheads ain’t bashful about eating a big Ol bait, I’ve had 2-3 lb flatheads eat a handsize bluegill.

Try the vertical jigging on these livescope fish with oversized spoons tipped with cut bait. As long as the treble hooks are big enough you should notice better hookups on your livescope fish.

I've done this and they want the bait moving, cast past them just like crappie or bass, they want to chase if possible, it will also create competition between them and they will hit anything dead or alive. Blues are much easier to catch this way, but honestly I hate to see this get started but I know it will anyway.

3 Brand new poles…. Two 7000 Kastking spinner reels and one Bait caster, bought fishing sliders that I never used ( watching Master Catfisher Spencer ) total cost was $375.00. I used a Carolina set up and a sliding sinker rig. Two nights fishing one catfish and a few Fallfish. Early morning 5am - 10am nothing …. Anyone want to buy the aforementioned 😂😂😂😂 … Just kidding ….. just a bad week of fishing up here in Connecticut. Water is still 40 - 45 degrees …. If I can’t catch them I guess I’ll watch Spencer and Justin.

I fish for crappie early spring vertical with minnow. Drop to the bottom and pull it up 2 feet. I often hook/catch quality flatheads without trying. I don’t use circle hooks for this, and set the hook myself. I’ve hade a high success rate doing this when fishing vertical
