I moved into an old Victorian fixer upper. It has an underground round brick cistern. I was supposed to fill it in and seal it. I simply built a room over it and left the manhole in the crawl space. I used to lower fish on a stringer into it until I had time to clean them. It's a couple of thousand gallons of free runoff that has old tiles running into it. The old owners used it for washing clothes. I just have it as my back up water. The cistern is a giant sphere of laid brick. The workmanship is amazing. It was hooked to an indoor hand pump in the kitchen sink, again for washing. I still have the pumps but I had to seal my actual wellhead. So drinking water would need to be filtered and boiled.

I live in New Zealand most people have a system that captures rainwater into a large storage tank that is constantly cycled every time it rains, the reason for this is we are an earthquake nation and when there is an earthquake we are off the grid immediately, rainwater becomes our primary source of water, yes it needs to be treated or boiled or purified, but it’s absolutely necessary in a disaster
@HolicCreation3 ай бұрын
It's great to hear that New Zealand has such a practical system in place! Capturing rainwater as a backup in case of earthquakes is a smart approach, especially given the country’s seismic activity. Treating and purifying the water ensures it's safe for consumption, which is crucial in emergencies. Do you think this model could be adapted to other regions with similar risks?

What you do or don't do is your responsibility. I deal with drinking water in my job. I live in Switzerland and drinking water is subject to food regulations here. Drinking water is a foodstuff, just like other foods. Here it is controlled according to HACCP. As soon as you are dealing with surface water, you have to know that there are germs like E-carbobacteria in the water, which can make people sick. In my opinion, you have to know that. You can have such water tested in a laboratory. As drinking water, the number of germs per litre can only have a certain limit. That is why it is disinfected chemically or with UV radiation. That is the legal requirement. I do not know what the regulations are in your country. You can do what you want. I only recommend that you point out that this system is not drinking water compliant. Or that it must be boiled first. I would therefore recommend that you protect yourself legally before you are held accountable if someone builds it and becomes ill. You can do anything with this filtered water. Just do not declare it as drinking water. This way you can certainly save water from the tap. But they reject any liability and say exactly what it can be used for. As soon as you touch something with your fingers and have not disinfected them beforehand, it is contaminated. I wanted to draw your attention to this. You know it, knowledge is power.

And where do you get water when you have a drought??....droughts can last for years....where I live, we have been under a mandatory water conservation for the past two years....this is fine for watering the garden....idk that I would want to shower in it.....and I certainly would not drink or cook with it. If all I could use it for is watering the garden, i could just set the barrel outside and remove the lid when it rains.
@HolicCreation4 ай бұрын
@HeinzStuker Thanks for sharing your thoughts! It is important to distinguish between collecting rainwater and using it as drinking water. Rainwater can be collected and used for many purposes, such as watering plants or washing, but for drinking purposes, it needs to be treated and filtered thoroughly. I completely agree that ensuring health safety is a top priority, and measures such as filtering, disinfecting, or boiling are necessary before consumption. The goal of the video is to provide information on how to effectively collect rainwater, but also to emphasize that rainwater needs to be properly treated before drinking. Hope this helps clarify the issue! Do you have any additional comments?
@HolicCreation4 ай бұрын
@uberurbana4894 You are right to put the bucket out and open the lid and there can be rain water. But as you just said, if a drought occurs we need to save every bit of water. And with a little rain, "opening the bucket lid" cannot help you fill the tank, then you will have to struggle to carry those buckets of water to a safe place to store. It will be a lot of work later just in exchange for the convenience of "opening the bucket lid". Thank you for watching the video and wish you a good day.

Good inventive display of how to harvest rainwater. Sad to see more plastics used but if it saves some water distribution problems i guess it's a valid use. One worries about malaria carrying mosquitoes tho if this global warming continues. They breed in any still water.
@HolicCreation4 ай бұрын
You bring up a great point! While using plastic for projects like this can be concerning, it's about finding balance in practical solutions to conserve resources. As for mosquitoes, ensuring the water is covered or adding simple mesh screens can prevent breeding. It's definitely something to keep in mind, especially with global warming's effects. Have you tried any other methods to manage rainwater that also address these concerns?

@HolicCreation4 ай бұрын
Yes, inline filter cartridges and reverse osmosis systems are great options for ensuring potable water. These systems are designed to remove contaminants and improve water safety effectively. Once the water passes through filters, reverse osmosis adds an extra layer of purification, eliminating most dissolved solids and harmful particles. No it isn't mandatory and never had been - In fact all three of the eastern states made it illegal or employed stupid regulations to stop people using rainwater it was only after the millennium drought that they realised it probably wasn't a good idea to stop it NSW simply outlawed it by making you pay for the water Queensland used dengue fever as an excuse despite the fact that no one had died from dengue fever in 50 years Victoria said that they could only be one colour NSW made you put a meter on the tank because it said the government owned all the water and would charge you for the water Needless to say rainwater tanks had almost completely disappeared from the suburban areas and it was only farmers that had them

Great video. Only thing I would improve upon is that you are wasting piping on the top. you only need the pipe to enter the first barrel since you have them all plumbed from the bottom. the water levels in all of them will rise are water is added to the first barrel. In the last one you may want to add an overflow and have that water redirected somewhere else like the garden or another barrel. I would also suggest putting goldfish in the tanks as mosquito larva will grow in standing water. the goldfish will use that as its food source, so you don't even have to feed them. Always use a filter even for rainwater.

Absolutely brilliant!!! Water dripping right over a power source, meanwhile this guy is working with bricks and electrical tools, and sealants and glue with no socks, shoes or gloves on!!!😂other than those things, the idea is a pretty good one I think… I like the idea of recycling and purifying your own water or rainwater. Or you could just buy a Brita Jug. The filters are pretty cheap compared to the price of everything you’re buying to set all of that up, and only need to be replaced every 3-4 months. No chance of parasites, spiders or debris getting into your water supply either. Not everybody has the space (or a driveway) to put all of those bricks, buckets, pipes and recycled pop bottles somewhere to set all of that up. By the looks of it, I am guessing you have a pretty nice house..? What about for people that live in an apartment or condo? And what about when the elements or animals (or somebody) does damage to something and you don’t notice it right away? Or one of the many different pipes or brackets starts leaking when you’re out of the house? You wouldn’t know how long you’ve been drinking tainted water for. And even though it’s only water it could flood a room & damage things that are on the floor. Just a thought… That’s too much work & monitoring for people that have jobs or go to school every day. I do admire the amount of time you put into thinking about all of this, you MUST be a plumber to know about all of those ideas & methods, cause not every average Joe or Jill would be able to set this up on the fly, but it does have its cons as well though, I’m just saying…

I pay my waterbill to get fresh filtered water in return. However I do feel this water should not be used to flush our toilets. So a seperated solution like yours could be the answer to not waste filtered drinking water. However here comes the First world problem: If we all would start collecting rainwater for toilet use the waterbill would not go down because filtering and treatment of our drinking water would still cost the same and this would bankrupt our whole watersystem. It's a Catch-22 situation. In The Netherlands we also have free public taps to fill our waterbottles inbetween walks. We are very privileged and should be thankful. The cooling of the roof with that sprinklersystem is genius. 👍🏻
@HolicCreation2 ай бұрын
You're right-using rainwater for non-potable purposes like toilets is smart, but it wouldn’t lower water bills since treatment costs remain the same. Public taps in places like the Netherlands are a privilege, and solutions like roof cooling systems help save resources. It’s all about finding a balance between personal use and maintaining sustainable infrastructure.
@Milidory2 ай бұрын
That's a good idea. However, if you put the material in the filter housing that way and use it, it only works for the first time, and over time, unrefined water comes out. Even if it's annoying, you should put the material in the cartridge and use it. This changes the water flow and improves the water purification performance.

In Wales, UK, we pay for our water because it's treated, you can't just drink what comes down from your roof. You may be able to boil it and use it for washing. I suppose it's fine for watering your garden and cleaning outside but over here you still need treated water.
@HolicCreation4 ай бұрын
Thanks for sharing your experience from Wales! You're absolutely right-untreated rainwater isn't safe for drinking directly, as it may contain contaminants. However, as you mentioned, it's great for tasks like watering the garden or cleaning outdoors. In many places, people boil or filter rainwater for other uses, but treated water is still essential for drinking and other household tasks. Have you ever thought about using rainwater for non-drinking purposes to save on treated water?

Haha, benar sekali! 😊

If there's a drought, having a rainwater collection system can be a lifesaver, as it allows you to utilize stored water for essential tasks like irrigation and flushing toilets. In dry conditions, it's crucial to manage that water wisely, prioritizing its use for the most important needs. Additionally, combining rainwater harvesting with other water-saving practices-like xeriscaping or using drought-resistant plants-can help conserve water overall. How do you currently manage water use during dry spells?

To optimize your water usage at home, you can try some of the following options: 1. **Handwashing water**: After washing your hands, collect the water and use it to flush the toilet. 2. **Recycled shower water**: After bathing, collect the water to water your plants. 3. **Washing vegetables**: Collect the water from washing vegetables to mop the floor or wash your car. 4. **Washing machine**: Waste water from the washing machine can be reused for other tasks such as cleaning. Do you have any other ideas to add?

Is there a certain angle that one should hold the drill at before boring the holes in the plastic pipe??? I really want to get this right!
@HolicCreation4 ай бұрын
Yes, it's important to hold the drill at the right angle for clean, precise holes. Ideally, you should hold the drill perpendicular (90 degrees) to the surface of the pipe. This will help ensure the holes are straight and even, which is crucial for uniform water flow or any other intended purpose. If the pipe is round, securing it in place first will prevent it from rolling and help maintain that angle. Have you already chosen the drill bit size you're planning to use?

@LOLOVAL-os3pq It's true that the filtration system in this DIY setup may not remove very fine particles like radioactive substances or certain atmospheric pollutants. However, the primary goal of this project is basic water filtration for non-drinking purposes, such as garden irrigation or washing. With additional layers, like activated carbon or reverse osmosis, it could be adapted for more advanced filtration needs. While it’s essential to acknowledge limitations, it serves a useful function for less critical water needs. What improvements would you suggest for a DIY project like this?

Not all plastic is appropriate, can be made of toxic chemicals which can leech into the water and cause serious illness. There's a lot of info about this on-line.
