Well that's the thing with pitch correction, if the singer's good you won't hear much of a difference (unless there are harmonies, like he said). If you make changes that are too drastic though, it's not just obvious, it sounds like a robot emulating a sound

Halocene used the built in Reason manual pitch corrector for over 90% of our career. It's not even that good, lol... We were just too stubborn to use a DAW with actual VST3 support until basically this year, lol. Props to DAWs with built in Native pitch correction - StudioOne has integrated Melodyne (native) basically. No scanning, transferring between external 3rd party stuff. You need VST3 support with ARA in your DAW to avoid the decade old way of transferring from a DAW to the corrector every time.

Pitch correction not only makes songs sound better, it makes it easier to make songs, meaning people can make whatever songs they want which means more quality music for consumers. I see no problem with it as long as people are transparent about it like producers and performers have been in the last decade. Pitch correction is good

Yeah, as a session player/singer it’s rather unfortunate (but understandable) the common laymen’s narrative that pitch correction is some sort of cheat. Now, I understand that the use of “hard tuning” for the robotic effect is probably the culprit here, making the uninformed assume that correction’s purpose is to somehow make a bad singer magically sound good by slapping on some tuning, but it can still be pretty annoying to me when I hear mildly ignorant opinions from music fans (and even some musicians I’ve met) who think pitch correction somehow can be used to overcome lack of vocal skill, which is just untrue to the point of being preposterous. If a producer doesn’t like using it, and would rather spend more time comping more takes to cobble together some sort of Frankenstein-ish final edit of a vocal track that’s going to sound like unnatural garbage, I guess that’s up to them, obviously…but I don’t think I’ve ever met a producer of any quality who makes actual money that rejects time saving measures, _especially_ ones that improve their workflow. If pitch correction were some sort of cheat, then virtually everyone I’ve met who tracks vocals in the pro world is a cheater. I realize as I’m finishing this that it’s evolved into a little bit of a rant now, but I think it’s great that this guy (who’s vocal tracks sound great, btw) made a video that will probably help his fans, who may also have heard that “it’s cheating” better understand the nature of pitch correction, and that it’s not just for amateur hacks or something. 😇

Had something like this happen to me. I was asked to edit a youth night that had a bunch of skits recorded. Well my laptop took forever to render and I was rendering them one project at a time. Stumbled upon batch rendering, where you basically separate the clips by region and it'll render those separately. Been doing them one at a time for years before learning about that. Didn't lose any money, but the time and sleep lost...ugh...

There is a trick with melodyne in logic where you can make the regular version's detecting almost as fast as ARA. 1. Put the regular melodyne on the track you want to tune. 2. Open melodyne and engage the transfer/detect button. 3. Bounce the TRACK in place not the region, the key command is Control + Command + B, make sure the destination is set to NEW TRACK. 4. delete the NEW track you just created, you don't need it. 5. Open melodyne and you will find your audio has been detected in the time it took to bounce the track in place. Most of the time I use ARA but if it gets buggy on me I use this method so I don't have to sit while melodyne detects the pitch.

Glad you found something that improves your workflow. At the end of the day the goal of any software is to make your job easier while still being effective. It’s matching the right things to your personal workflow style and exploring those things to see what benefits you and what doesn’t. Seeing how Autotune performs on tuning tho, I do feel it’s more of a glaze than anything else, which is why I’m happy RTA came with my Apollo (i didn’t have to buy anything except the hardware I already wanted). Also having Melodyne I don’t really need much more since I can pretune and touch things up and still get that “modern sound” only autotune seems to be able to give for whatever reason. Like they’re for different things imo if that makes sense. I’d definitely turn to Melodyne, Logic’s built in thing, or something else that’s similar before relying solely on autotune.

I've been using Waves Tune for years which requires the scanning thing, but switched to Melodyne recently. The ARA version works for me and its a HUGE time saver, also with the super expensive version thats like $800 or something you can view multiple vocal layers at the same time in every instance of Melodyne. Seeing them all together makes it pretty easy to adjust timings, match pitches or fix harmonies. This flex pitch tool looks pretty great too though, and I do all my vocal recording in Logic so i'll give it a try. Doesn't look like it has all the features of Melodyne but could easily be used 90% of the time and the other 10% of the time you break out one of the expensive tools.

Thanks for this info I was researching OVox Vocal ReSynthesis when I found your video . I have Fl, Reason,etc never ever thought about Pro Tools because I thought it cost thousands of dollars. Like you said never stop exploring and learning how to best use what you have. the shortcoming of flex is all about the breathing editing, Flex can never identify the breathing correctly but melodyne can, therefore I use both flex and melodyne, flex first for pitch corrections, and melodyne for fine tuning, and NO AUTOTUNE for sure lol

I work an internship and my entire job is to use melodyne to pitch correct the vocals then mix them and bounce back to the master engineer. I enjoy mixing but it would always drag down my process by spending so much time scanning vocal tracks and hand editing every note

I use Melodyne Studio, on my PC, a 4 minute track scans in less than 15 seconds. My clients are never bothered by conversion time. Also, most often I will select a region that I want to correct, rather than the whole track, and the correction is less than a second.

It’s really buggy in logic… I have a lot of old sessions that went and untuned themselves… it’s gotten to the point where working in Reaper now, I render a copy with tuning when I’m done so I have the original but also a tuned “take” in the take folder. That way it can’t go and untune everything and I can revert if I need to fix anything or render raws.

I totally recommend Melodyne and their pitch corrector for instruments called DNA: Direct Note Access. You can change note in the middle of a guitar chord. So instead of doing another take on a single missed note on a chord. You can add or change that one note. -via an OG Pro Audio Guitar Center employee .....i always hated auto tune

I couldn't figure out why my harmonies were always flat when I went to pitch correct them. Come to find out the equal temperament used to set pitch frequencies means pitch correction is always sharp of the actual harmonic frequency.

I got some melodyne with my Studio One 4 professional, but never used it to anything other than pitch shift a whole song so I can play it with a different guitar tuning (song was in B, I was in Drop C)... Hearing Jonathan uses Melodyne, thinking he's just that flippin good, I'm gonna try it as well. I'm still gonna pay for singing lessons, but wil also use Melodyne on top of it. Thank you

I started out with trackers and Cubase 2.0 (Atari). And I was happy when it became possible to use plugins, music production became available to almost everyone. But Pitch сorrection(esp. autotuning) - has had a controversial impact on the industry. For the mixing engineer, it made easier to work on the material. But on the other hand, it is one of the reasons why many mediocre musicians and vocalists began to consider themselves professionals. Now the need for ear for music has disappeared. Although, many tasks have become solvable, for example, correction of polyphonic samples, etc.

the ARA melodyne is pretty neat, but I use Mixcraft 9. It's built directly into that version of the DAW, which is kinda handy. Most often though I find myself using different VSTs like Gsnap and Kerovee though depending on the feeling I'm going for.
