so while this is a functional way to use Melodyne, my favorite (and imo, most effective) way to tune vocals is using Melodyne in the standalone program form (not as a VST in a DAW). The standalone version of Melodyne runs so much better, and scans audio files loaded into it almost instantly just like this technique--and there's no hassle with tracks or anything so you can just focus on one vocal track at a time (and in Melodyne Editor and above, you can have multiple tracks if you want). You can just dump the vocal track into Melodyne standalone, tune everything, and then export it as a WAV and dump it in the DAW. If you need to make changes, just re-open the Melodyne project and re-export as the same file name (takes like, 10 seconds maybe) and the file will auto-update in your DAW. If you're not using ARA editing, standalone makes so much more sense unless you just hate having multiple programs open or something. I also really like having all the undo layers not get mixed up between undoing DAW changes and undoing tuning changes--having the vocal tuning in an entirely separate project means I can't accidentally screw it up. Anyway, just my two cents haha!

this is a great idea, but you can kinda do the same thing directly in the DAW if you just print pitch correction by bouncing the track after you correct it :)

First things first: I really enjoy that you not only made a whole video about telling people your experience and hope that they won't do the same mistakes, but now that you added this one, explaining what you learned! I think it shows so greatly, thatnobody knows everything and that we all need to continue learning, even in subjects we 'think' we know all about, and that making mistakes isn't a big deal, but just human. Love it, that you talk about your experience to help other people! Really shows how great of a human you are.

I would actually like to see how you mix your stuff! I've watched tons of videos on mixing, but I just feel I don't have a ear for it. However, I've also found that even when paying big $$$ others aren't really making my tracks always what I want to hear.
@CreativeMindsAudio2 жыл бұрын
oh yeah this is a common tip most audio engineers do. Also a huge plus about melodyne is that you can use it for several things at once besides JUST pitch. it has some incredible amplitude and sibilance control it will filter out the 's' sounds so you can see it and not even include it with the pitch correcting (less artifacts). This also allows for easy automation and de-essing and tuning/timing control all in one app. It is way easier than using the DAW I find. Though i ONLY use this when I'm already tuning the song. Otherwise I don't want the sound of the tuning plugin to be put on the track. That being said I do feel that logic and cubase both have some good built in tuners, but they are less transparent than melodyne and less powerful. good for subtle tuning. I don't think that the benefits of melodyne are worth it for most musician users. Engineers? Definitely!

I've been a fan for years didn't you make a video saying that everybody uses like pitch correction when they're making an album anyways. Your amazing. I miss back in the day like the '80s I'm not that old but or no one used to pitch correction or do they even use it back then
@IceBen44442 жыл бұрын
I'm a bit confused about this pitch correction method, do they on purpose "hide" instant scanning behind a paywall? There is no reason at all for the computer to listen to your track, it sounds like a very made-up problem baked into the software.
@shaboogen2 жыл бұрын
The reason the computer can't listen to the track is because audio effects only have access to audio going through them and the DAW controls things like transport etc. The reason the bounce trick works is because the audio is being played by the DAW and heard by the plugin, it's just being heard at offline bounce speed. This is why if you have a reverb tail that goes beyond the time that you're bouncing, you'll hear it after you bounce the audio. As David Guthrie Music said in another comment, they will automatically scan audio when loaded standalone. This is because in standalone, they have complete control of all of the information and aren't bound by the rules of the DAW. This is the problem that ARA (Audio Random Access) was designed to solve. An ARA compliant plugin has the ability to access audio data for the entire song at once as opposed to just what they are listening to, hence the reason why they don't have to scan. The functionality isn't gated behind a paywall here, it's actually already been fixed in a version that Jonathan has access to, but as he said both in the previous video and this one, the ARA version crashes his system.

How to do that kind of stuff in FL: - So first thing you wanna do is selecting the part you want to scan in the playlist (by double clicking at the beginning of your track and dragging all the way to the end of it in the ruler above every track) - Then make sure you put melodyne on the same bus as your track and that you enabled transfer - You go on the little arrow all the way on top left of your mixer (top left of "master" bus) and then go on disk recording (make sure "apply track level and mute audio" is enabled so you can just mute the tracks you don't wanna record) - Then Render to WAV file (If it is greyed, you can click the tiny circle on the bottom of the bus you want to transfer that says "record -idk what-" and then go back to disk recording) And there you go melodyne recorded the whole tracks within a sec or two There may be better ways if you guys wanna try but this one works so why not !

As a longtime Logic Pro user myself, I still was unaware Flex Pitch was even a thing - I've always been using the stock Pitch Correction plugin (which itself is... not bad, but pretty limiting in places). As far as video ideas go.. perhaps one looking at Logic's other stock plugins and comparing them to the more costly third-party ones? I've noticed that music KZbinrs have a tendancy to go "here are some of the plugins you need to make music (cheap, free, expensive, or otherwise), even though DAWs tend to have their own equivalents pre-installed, some of which in my experience are pretty decent on their own. Heck, everything I produce is still done with Logic Pro's stock plugins; and sure, while they don't sound "professional-grade", it does come close in my opinion.

This is an insanely cool trick! I'll keep note of it if I ever switch DAWs, since the DAW I use now actually supports ARA and automatically detects audio anyway. Btw, a tip for anyone having trouble with ARA in Reaper. Add Melodyne as a take effect instead of a track effect. I've found that using it on a whole track can create some weird bugs if you have multiple instances, whereas having it as take FX on the individual takes themselves gives me no problems, even on my biggest of projects. :)

I'm not much of a money having person, so I use trial versions of these plugins. Yesterday I installed the latest (trial) version of Melodyne. As I was about to run my track through the plugin, I remembered your video, and thought "oh crap, I forgot about that", but I needed it so I went with it. However, to my surprise, when I ran Melodyne, the track was already loaded. I didn't do anything I hadn't done before, it just scanned automatically. I can't find any "scan" option either, it's just already there.

I actually like Waves Tune more than AutoTune and Melodyne because it allows you to manually draw. So, say you're recording a singer whose vibrato sucks balls and you want it to be nice and even - you can draw that in. Or say you don't like how a singer slid into a note...you can fix that curve manually.

All Acapella and raw, just record and upload, but like I said, it's just for fun, not to make money.
