Just to be clear regarding FPS. My FPS is fine for the majority of a race but at the start with all the cars visible it drops. I could lower the graphics settings and get a consistent 165fps, but as I mentioned in the video that's not my priority right now 😁

I used a 60hz 20inch screen at 900p for a very long time, and it didn't affect me at all, speed wise I was competing with top alien drivers without problems The most important thing IMO is to give yourself time to get used to the equipment and get the most out of it, upgrading very often is not ideal because you are constantly in the adaptation phase with the new equipment and usually it takes some time to get out of it. @@michaelmeier9085

Hi Dave, Thanks for this short segment. It sort of put my ADHD/anxiety brain at ease. In whatever I do I'm constantly battling with myself with the question of "is what I have enough?" I just started racing on a PC platform, having made the jump from console and I was worried that being on a single monitor might be limiting my experience and that I needed to somehow find more money to upgrade yet again. I'm gonna take your advice and enjoy the drive with what I have. Cheers, mate!

Yes! I just made this switch myself. But from triple 24s to a 43 inch TV. It's simplified everything! And since I have head tracking and use Racelab's radar, I still race just as well (or badly 😂😂). And 4k visuals with all that vertical fov is immersive in a different way to triples. Some day, I'd like a beast PC and triple 32s or larger, but for now, I'm very happy.

Nothing wrong with single screen sim racing Dave. It's all I have used for the last 3 or so years. Yes it is a little more awkward when racing side by side going into a turn but you soon learn to leave enough space for the other car. I know how expensive it can be to upgrade a PC as I have just built a new one myself. It wasn't a small amount but if I had bought it pre built it would have cost a fortune for the spec I have. I use a 43in UW on a pivot mount as that's what I have for work, and like you said it doesn't make sense to spend loads on a second set of screens that I (sadly) only use a few times a week. There's always add-on button boxes and things like racelabs overlays if anyone struggles with awareness on singles, so I fully agree - VR and triples are nice, but by no means a requirement for good racing. @MrWolff1994 the eye tracking part doesn't really work at all if it's on top of the monitor, and it loses tracking if it's on the bottom due to the wheel blocking it at times. But the head tracking is perfect if it's on top. You do need to download their beta software for it to work in a non-standard position.

If you have the correct fov the size of things should be literally equal in a 55" and in a 17" monitors. What change is just how much "things" you can see, that's how fov setting works. If you see things smaller you are probably setting your camera to view more things and hence you are messing up your "correct" FoV.

@@LordAzuren You may be correct. I let iRacing calculate my FoV, but I tend to move the seat position in game so that I can see the gauges better. Things in-game feel small, but I am limited by the technology and my practical use of it. VR is what I aspire to use, but am hesitant.

Hi Dave, I like your approach. There's a whole host of factors that contribute to screen (heck, entire rig) configuration and it's always a good thing to be able to not spend more money but get an improvement on some aspect of the experience. Regarding the amount of time racing side by side being less than you think - in a road race I'd estimate 1 lap in 20 I'll be alongside someone, so 5% of the time. But if you haven't yet, try dirt oval racing. Side by side racing for 80+% of the race, it's amazing

Your message about the amount of time you are side by side spoke to me, sure, triples get the immersion, but at a major cost. The way my set up is, I could probably push triples at a lower graphic setting, but I'd probably cost me double the money to get the mount and 3 decent screens vs a single mount (or none) and a decent 42 or 55 inch 4k screen. The 55 might be "excessive" based on how close I have it though. lol.

For me, the real benefit of triples comes down to just a few things. First, I can see much further into corners. That includes seeing wrecks/pileups that are ahead of me, around corners. My rearview, and driver's side mirrors are visible in all cars. Lastly, the immersion is only bettered by VR. With that said, I'd be relatively satisfied on a single 27" 1080p 75hz. Actually owning a simucube pro and vrs pedals for 4 months, 3.5k driver, but i struggle so much with my consistency and making corrections. Idk if a monitor could help me on my lap times and mostly on my consistency

I race mainly the Nascar series. For pack racing a single monitor/tv is tough as you can spend almost an entire race in traffic. The peripherals for me are a must. Not saying you cant race on a single this is just my preference.

I did the same for years on a 42" tv but used head tracker. Basically had my head turned slightly to the left forever and it worked perfectly. Takes a bit of getting used to but honestly with how well it ran, I was happy. Triples are definitely better though Lol. I was about 4500IR for oval then 3800 road with singles. Just take it easy and things are fine.

Hows the input latency on a TV as opposed to a monitor? Also, whats the bottleneck, cpu or gpu? I would have thought it'd be CPU. Surely a 3090 can easily juggle 3 screens at lower settings? Or maybe you prefer high settings?

I got a modular triple screen rack in case i ever want to go for triple screens. So i have built the single screen option and the other parts are in the cellar. Since my PC isn't good enough for more than 1 43 inch 4K screen i never had the intention to upgrade and it works just fine for me. It's good to have the option due to the rack but I'm not too much interested to upgrade anytime soon and I'm good with the one screen I have.

Dave, something I've always wanted to try with sim racing is using a single big TV but setting a custom 21:9 resolution on the PC so effectively you get a big ultrawide, albeit with black bars top and bottom but I don't think that would matter. Surely that would give the best of both worlds, IE: a massive screen but also the ultrawide field of view (which is awesome for racing as you'll already know). Performance wise it'll be no worse than driving the 4k TV, not sure exactly how it works with a custom resolution so the GPU might be rendering the black bars top and bottom but even so, it's still no worse than driving the 4k TV. Maybe give that a go while you have a single big TV setup on the rig. I think you'd have to set the custom resolution in Nvidia Control Panel to 3840x1600.

Obviously you upgrade parts over time, but I haven’t yet switched to PC. Therefore I‘m still racing on a single screen and it’s perfectly fine. :) new PC is coming though, PlaySeat rig will move out and the Fanatec CSL pedals are also going to be selled. It’s all down to the money you can invest at a time. I think it’s been a smart decision Dave.

Totally understanding your toughts Dave, for a creator using a single monitor can be quite useful for all the reason you told us in the video. Sacrificing a bit of lateral vision for a better content for us is something that i can totally understand and anyway once you get used to driving with a single monitor (especially a big one) is totally doable. Probably if someone doesn't have any budget/space/performance issues triple are still a better choice but for a content creator your new setup is probably a better compromise. What's your take about trackir after you tried it a bit some time ago? Do you still use it or you prefer to have a "steady" camera and just rely on the spotter to know what's in your surroundings?

No room for tripples. Using a single superwide curved qd oled and recently added track ir. The latter required training to get used to but once you get it it becomes natural to look into the side mirrors. Positive side effect for me with trackIR is a more active seating posture. The ability to move forward a little and looking up down allows to see more of the track in blind corners. Looking forward to the incoming ultra super wides qd oleds.

Hope you see this... I always wanted head tracking and had no idea it was a thing until your comment... Does it really track your head position like when you lean to the front or side? Does it really give an illusion like your monitor is a window into the virtual world?

@frankderks1150 3 ай бұрын
@@outlander234 Yes it tracks to the front, back, sides, up and down and left and right. It's not so much an illusion to a virtual word but as I see it it's more of a camera controller that shifts the view on your monitor and allows you to see beyond the the edges of a fixed monitor view.

Curious as to why your performance suddenly dropped? Or was it always poor running the triple 27s? Obviously the computer being older doesn't make it slower than it was before, and it's not like there's some new fancy title out that requires higher specs. I was able to run triple 4K displays in iRacing at around 70FPS with a 9900K and 2080Ti back when I first set up my rig, so 40FPS with triple 1440s on a 3090 sounds very low. Either way you're absolutely right. My test rig uses a single 55in 4K display and it works just fine as long as you have a spotter running.
