Dave. When looking for an empty trailer smack the side of the trailer (this works for thin walled trailers). If you hear an echo chances are it’s empty (if just a thud it’s not). This will save you from having to walk to the back of every trailer… As for the padlock, drivers try to hold trailers for themselves. And not consider other drivers that may need that empty. They do the same thing at my carrier. My carrier will send someone out to cut the lock off and bill it back to that driver.. Great video. Kept me laughing. Stay safe out there.✌️

I didnt know if you know this but UPS Freight is no longer UPS anymore it is now T Force Freight (TFI). They are almost like a buddy company to yall. Basically they do all the LTL and CFI does the Truckload stuff. That is most likely why you see a bunch of your trucks there. Im sure you know this by now but just in case ya dont now ya do ! TForce is a North American customized final-mile logistics company. Nothing against cfi or any other company but I'm glad where I am I stay hooked to the same trailer. Been that way since I've been here. The trailer you get when you get hired on is the trailer you keep till you leave the company. Unless it's damaged. But every time I got to the yard it gets worked on so maintenance isn't an issue. I've been in your shoes on this day as well. Actually did the exact same thing and opened up someone else's doors to find it was already hooked to a truck. Also when it came to you being refused to grab an empty from a DC. I would've told them you don't own our trailers so you can't hold them. Bobtail or not.

When I worked for roehl transport They had a app on my phone that showed you all the empty trailers in the yards. Or anywhere at any customer. That way if we needed one we could just click on it and drive to it.. another way to tell is by the tandems being all the way back. The yard jockeys do that when they park them after being in the docks

With all the things controlled by software these days why do the carriers lay such a burden on the drivers? The carriers should know exactly where the empties are and send the data to the driver with GPS coordinates so they can see their location via satellite. At least one LTL does it that way.

You can do that via reefer trailers its harder to do with a van as there not battery to know it location

Right?! I've heard the Amazon trailers have trackers on them now but not entirely sure. I know back when I drove for for CRST, Amazon required us to have their app on our phones to track us. So in a way I guess this could be a system to track where their empties are.

Given the number of times I've seen Dave (and other trucking KZbinrs) have to reference trailer numbers on their paperwork when checking in with security at the various plces, I'd have thought the companies would have had SOME idea of what the trailer numbers were at each depot/drop-off etc... I mean if they know driver X dropped loaded trailer 12345 at shipper Z delivery point and left with a different trailer number (ie 45678), then surely the first trailer should still be sitting in the system as 'empty' until they then get paperwork from the shipper that it's been reloaded to go to another point, right? ..but I guess that's me being overly organised or something... 🤷‍♂

I’m sure the systems in place track where trailers are dropped at and picked up from. Problem comes when some shippers/receivers do not empty the trailers in a timely manner and even use them as extended storage to their warehouse.

Dave, I used to be dedicated to Home Depot in Columbia, SC and went thru some of the same stuff when I went to McCalla, Al for an empty. It took my dispatcher calling the HD Logistics Manager in McCalla, and then the manager had to call the guard shack and tell them to let me have an empty. Help your fellow drivers out and pass this along to your dispatcher

LOL, Dave. Sometimes after about 7 years the “I’m really a truck driver.”, can take on a very different meaning. Heard the song Prisoner of the Highway? Yeah, kind of like that. I tried to go back to a regular job, but the 9-5 lifestyle isn’t for me anymore. I hated having someone over my shoulder all the dang time. Lasted about 3 months on a M-F rotating shift. Getting ready to leave tomorrow to go back regional.
