So, the DEFINITIVE SECRET is to be an amazing painter, and then NMM is easy and fun? I saw everything you showed us. But the style/method/process used is Masterclass. The only thing I really learned is that nothing in this video will help me in any attempt I would make to paint NMM myself. Not a knock on Sergio. The end product here is AMAZING! Just annoyed at the marketing BS titles so commonly used on youtube.
@Timeremortem
@Timeremortem Жыл бұрын
Secret to NMM is just to know how light works on metal surfaces. Paint accordingly to that. Take it slow. Avoid brush strokes so stippling and glazing helps. And pick the right mini for it. Easier to do a larger bust then to do it on a 28mm scale. After that it's more or less just the hours you need to put in and get good at it. I keep seeing videos saying. watch this and paint like a god or watch this and unlock the secrets. While the only truth is. Paint more.. MORE MORE AND MORE. And use always try to paint new things. Dont get stuck. Try and dare to make mistakes and paint something your unhappy with. Be prepared and ok mentaly to strip a model of all paint and start over. And live with your past projects. What you did last year will dwarf in comparrison to your next year. In the end your painting for yourself and no one else.

I agree about the title I've tried NMM and the results were decent enough, but I don't enjoy painting in a realistic style and prefer a more cartoony vibe so I don't do NMM anymore... I don't see that as an excuse, merely my choice as an artist

You are right Sergio. Painting metal this way can achieve an aspect that is simply impossible when using metallic colors. I find it far superior, and much closer to traditional painting.
@technoartfest8708
@technoartfest8708 7 ай бұрын
All this techniques while looks good , fails to actually produce how metals should look like. Sergio needs to grab a 3d program and put Metalic shaders on Scuptures and compare it with Non metalic shaders.. Is not just the texture what changes.. but the way Surface reflect light is very differen. You can't simulate "metalic surfaces" by just combining textures.. it will look like a fake metal surface in the end. What makes a Metal surface , to look metalic is the way Light Bounce on it. Its surfaces have to be highly reflective of real physical light of his room, Something that is absolutely lacks on all his paint work.. A difference needs to be made between Art that looks good versus Surfaces that looks metalic.. He is very good in art , but still don't get it , why is not possible to fake Metals with just art. A proper hack to creating surfaces that looks like metals , needs to properly emulate its reflections.. What Sergio is doing could be called concepting art.. that looks artistic and good , but it doesn't look like metal at all.. More like armor made of paper , trying to look like metal but failing at it. The people that truly understand the issue and really wants to get there , use either OIL metalic paints ,to simulate better metals , or either use acrylics like vallejo metals ,that actually contain metalic like powder inside the paint and that you can see it right from the container of shinney particles inside the paint. It looks close to the real thing when paint is wet.. but when it dry it lose most some of its metalic properties ,because in the end is all about how the surface reflect light ,what is unique about metals.. Best way to get proper metals , is to 3d print miniatures in metals , not in plastic , some companies already doing that. THey have 3d printers that use real metal in powder form to print anything they want. From metal pieces to art . This is why is so hard to paint black armor that looks metalic, and looks realistic. And not just matte art ,as most spray painters does with their minis. Accuracy in reflections is everything in metals ,without them what you are doing is a hack , just concept 2d art that while it will look good ,as any 2d acryclic paint will look in the hands of a pro , it doesn't look at all metallic. in any way, looks fake.

I lvoe this. I would not take the time/care to do this, I feel, or maybe one day I will. But it's also not my job, I paint a certain quality, but that quality is based on that I only want to put so much effort into each thing. What I appreciate, though, is that you have this out there to look at. I think anyone can look at this and learn something, no matter what level they are at. This is amazing. I know the point isnt to go step by step over colors etc. But for the first 3-5 layers of armor to get all the basic reflections and highlights established was that adding white to a single color? Or all different paints? Im always debating between lightening my base color or just changing paints as it gets lighter. Any advice would be appreciated!

I must be terribly stupid since I don't seem to understand the "secrets" to where to put the highlights, how to choose colours that present as metal in the end nor what you used the airbrush for. Adding shadows? Smoothing transitions? Changing the tone/colour. Like I said, I'm probably just too stupid to comprehend it so great video!

Hi, what can be extracted from the video are methods and structure. Unlike other NMM videos, Sergio doesn't thin down the paint, but instead uses thick layers and doesn't use glazes or inks. He simply starts with the base color of the shadows and then adds the lights and colors of the reflections. Finally, he adds the more saturated tones with the airbrush and restores the shine to the brightest points with the Brush I hope this helps!

The ultimate secret is just... extreme talent for light placement, you literally could have stopped at 3 min and its would still be an amazing piece. dont get me wrong its awesome to watch this process, But i think that kind of knowledge cant be teached by a 1hour video, you must paint A LOT to achieve such precise volumetric highlights. Buenas Sergio!

How can you achieve this result without using any glazes or shades? Your layers seems pretty thick and i dont see any blending technic, however the transitions are cleans… 🤔 what kind of magic it is ? 😳
@juble7086
@juble7086 Жыл бұрын
The sheer quantity of tones he uses. IE: layering, instead of glazing. The transitions perhaps aren't as clean as someone masterfully glazing, but for high contrast shiny armour with lots of reflections, it isn't necessary.

He is glazing, just with the airbrush at the end. People put way too much emphasis on glazes these days when you can do just as much with regular layer consistency paints.
@m-rik3191
@m-rik3191 Жыл бұрын
@@spamstabber You contradict yourself a bit. Since he uses glazing at the end, it is proof to me that regular layer consistency paints are not enough. Yes, people may be too focused on glazing, but for me it's still the best way to get a good end result that can quickly make the difference between a professional and an amateur look. Or maybe glazing, blurring transitions and regular consistency paint is somehow pretty similar for you.

It is my unique style of painting, I have been showing the world that glazes are not my way and with tutorials like this one I show how easy it can be to paint and achieve incredible results. This and much more is what I teach in my online academy and in my step by step tutorials with explanations :D

Alright, for anyone that's a bit frustrated by the title, I could do a breakdown of the process, but it would be quite long. I'll start and if there are questions I'll anwser them as they come, if there are any. Do note that what I will say is my conjecture and educated guesses, so I could be wrong, I have however an artistic background, understand color theory, and am a pretty decent mini painter myself. Here we go: -first understand that many decisions were taken beforehand, and that prep work has been done such as research on reflections and such. the firsts decisions were either a marine theme or a brass armor, and the rest flew from there. -khaki green was used as a base because he wanted the armor to look like brass and not gold, hence a more muted and cold base compared to gold. This green still retains brown in its composition, so it can transition from the browns to the blues more easily than if the base color was grey or a warm brown. Since we don't want to look like gold we also will avoid yellows, instead highlighting with greenish/greyish beiges. -Blues and greens are comonly seen in marine themes, so that is mostly why the cape and stairs have them, in contrast to the armor, though, they are very saturated. The cape is mainly used as a way to frame the body, that is why less attention was placed there. Also, we don't want do distract the viewer from the more important part: the body -the clothes are in low saturation color and quite dark to contrast from the armor, which also serve as a way to place the focus there first, we can see that the loincloth is treated as a continuation of the armor, hence its color (also, making it dark would break the composition) Alright, that's gonna suffice for an introduction. Now ask away, you all in search of anwsers.

Sorry if i sound a bit harsh: this is the kind of video, where you feel worse after watching it. Your style and skill is amazing. But to profit from it, it is necessary, that you explain what you do. How and why did you choose these colours for the underpainting? How do you decide where to put reflexions and highlights and so on...Maybe it is just me and this is a channel for experienced painters.
