The Beluga XL is based on the A330-200 because other variants of the A330 (and also the A340) need a longer runway than the one at this particular airport… if you can believe Wikipedia’s article about the airport. They considered trying to get the runway lengthened but decided to made the XL able to work with what’s available. Maybe the short-field ability also makes it a more versatile cargo aircraft in general?
@DrFod
@DrFod 3 ай бұрын
They can't really lengthen the runway due to the railway line to the north and the B5125 road and rising terrain to the south.

Fantastic stuff - I've always loved these. Apart from the obvious details which make them unique, it's the little things too such as the fact they're are so large that they need two nav lights on the top of the fuselage instead of the usual one on the centre line. Superbly-documented Lewis. Many thanks.

Yep, you do get used to it. Mostly it's fairly similar for most things, so you don't need to worry too much about what they are going to say. Where it does fall down slightly is where French controllers tell you to route via a certain VRP and you have no idea what it was that they said to be able to even look for it on a map!

I miss the variety compared to today. Heck, except for the odd cargo plane we don't even get 747s anymore.

Serious question - in other videos, you've discussed how intercepting (i.e. just listening to) communications not meant for you could be an offense in the UK. Is there an exception for Air Traffic Control? BTW, I think it's insane that you can get sanctioned just for listening to a scanner over there.

There's no exception but in fact getting in trouble whether it was emergency services or anyone else was very rare, I probably hold the record of 10 times or do but many times had no issues with emergency services, as for airband at airports, military bases you'll see loads and at airshows no body cares regardless of the law, it's a very under used law always has been
