Some people bring in the "what's my KD ratio" mindset to FGs, but for me I can only stay invested in a fighter if I'm playing a character I'm actually motivated to learn or naturally groove with. If you play some meta character you don't really care about just to avoid losing as much as possible, those inevitable losses are just gonna be that much saltier.

That's exactly it for me tbh, the "naturally groove with" part. I can only really stick with a game if I have a character I feel strongly about and who just fits my hands. I've tried every top tier in Strive and most of them fit my patterns as a player (Sol and Ram convert off of everything and Leo just smashes face) but absolute bottom tier Anji is by far the most fun cause he just feels *right* for me

Hey Sajam! I dunno if you'll see this but I wanted to tell you that I've gotten way into the FGC over the past week thanks to your videos. KZbin recommended Will it Kill? to me and I watched it out of boredom. It was actually fun to watch even though I had never played a fighting game. I definitely did not know what was happening but it was all either interesting, funny, or super hype. I've bought Guilty Gear Strive and I'm going to try and learn it. Your Strive videos combined with Core-A's stuff that keeps showing up in my recommended have me seriously excited to try this game out! So thanks!

I'm always amazed at people saying they have fun losing tons of matches in a row. If I play a fighting game online and lose 10 times in a row I just go "the game isn't matching me up with someone on my skill level" and decide that the game's matchmaking mechanism is faulty. At this point I would most likely stop playing the game. The first online match I played in Melty Blood was with someone with over 500 matches under their belt. I haven't played the game since.

@@Shining4Dawn it's not that I have fun losing its that I'm having fun learning. I don't play fighting games to just win every game. I play to solve problems, invent mixups and do sick combos. So true! That is why I instantly droper KOF XIV on release and never touched it again but then I came back for the Betas and I am liking it now, same with Guilty Gear, I loved Xrd and moved into it then into Strive, I simply get fun and play, or stop playing if I don't get fun. I think that a lot of people who doesn't get paid for playing/winning still stick to a game where they feel they can achieve "something" that let them feel better because they have a lot of frustration in their lives and the only achievements they could get are those in a game =/

I think some people are upset that the character that appeals to them doesn't feel as strong or easy to use as the characters that appeal to other people. To use your food analogy, it's like if you're at a restaurant with your friend. Your friend loves steak, and you love burgers. But this restaurant makes great steaks, and terrible burgers. You might feel annoyed that they got to enjoy their meal more than you, because you wanted to have a good burger, but that wasn't an option for you, whereas your friend got to have the delicious steak they wanted. "Of course you enjoyed your meal, you had a steak!" you say, while sitting in a steakhouse and eating their shitty burger. And maybe you've gone out to a bunch of restaurants with this friend, and every restaurant you go to seems to have a great steak for them, but the burgers are hit and miss. There might be some pent-up resentment towards your friend or the restaurant because of this. I don't condone the endless whining that goes on in Sajam's chat, but I kind of get where some of these people are coming from. Ultimately, you've got to either accept that you have to eat a nice steak you didn't really want, or a shitty burger, or you've got to find a different restaurant. But when everyone's gushing about the new steakhouse in town and you feel left out when that's the only place everyone seems to want to eat, I understand why you might be a little salty.
@hazzydahaka13
@hazzydahaka13 3 жыл бұрын
To summarise in a fighting game sense, you either gotta pick the top tier you don't like, pick the bad character you do like, or pick a different game. Or simply move down the list of characters your interested in.
@somedude15231
@somedude15231 3 жыл бұрын
I see your point, but getting salty because someone else got to enjoy their meal is still a bad look. Plus, the way most fighting games are, even the worst character is playable most of the time (maybe not most, but a lot of the time). So the shitty burger is really just a lil dry. Also, idk man, maybe just order the damn steak next time. The human brain is capable of enjoying more than one thing. Or just go to a place with good burgers.

I think the thing you're missing that explains the salt around char choice is that most people find it fun when they can do the thing they want to with the char they chose. "I picked pot, i wanted to land some pot busters". Then they run into a situation where they feel like they are forced to go away from the fun aspects of their char they want to do and thats frustrating. This generally happens when your char is low tier, esp if the moves of the gimmick they want to do are just so bad they're unusable so now the character doesn't deliver on the promise of being able to execute the idea you had in mind, or when you're against an oppressive top tier or matchup which invalidates your gimmick and instead you have to use awkward tools you don't like to use to play against their gameplan, so it feels like they get to have fun, while you have to work and don't get to play, or even worse, you just have no clue how to beat it, so you feel like you don't get to do anything except watch the other person have fun without you. So when people say "of course you have fun with X char" they're saying "the character you like gets to do those fun things you like all the time, while I have to put up with stuff I don't like just to sometimes be able to do the things I like with the char I like". So to take your chivalry2 example, you had fun even when you failed, bc you got to do things you found fun, throwing swords, chasing people down, but if you had been shut down at every opportunity, like if you kept dying 10 seconds after respawning over and over again bc some archer you cant even see keeps sniping you from across the map, its not nearly as fun. There are probably ways to deal with that situation, but if they involve having to change your playstyle to something you don't enjoy, then why continue to play when you can probably find something more fun to do?

For the most part, I think most players put far too much emphasis on winning in order to have fun. A good to great player at anything usually only wins 55-60% of their matches. Meaning, even if you're good at something, you might still spend half of your time playing a game losing. And if that enrages or frustrates someone, they need to mature or get a new hobby.

I realized recently I have major overthinking syndrome when I go to pick characters. I go through things like “I should play x because x will make me better at the game”, “I can’t play y because y won’t make me good at the game”, “I can’t play z because my friends will say I’m cheap, I want a character they have to hold the l losing to” I literally started to second guess my skullgirls team because it has no airdashers on it and I was thinking “I need to play a character that has airdashes other wise I won’t learn to play airdashers” How ridiculous is that? Recently I was having character crisis in strive because Potemkin was my first love and everyone gives so much hate to grapplers and I was like “I want to be good”. It’s so stupid. To make it worse I always think a lot of characters look cool so I over analyze their pros and cons when deep down there are always one or two I’m most drawn to, I just also like the others. I decided I am going to just play who I am most drawn to. We forget sometimes that we are playing games to have fun. Even if you want to play competitively, good luck doing it if you aren’t having any fun at all. And also, why do it if you aren’t having fun? Why not have the most fun. This rant went long, but if you’re reading this and you’re like me, know that you are not alone, know that our “problem” is ridiculous, and just pick the character that draws you in and learn from their perspective. I am also writing this to procrastinate. Fuck I need to study. Have a good day everyone

This reminds me of my brothers description of his approach to MTG. It’s a zero sum game. So if you’re having NO fun, then that must mean that I’m having ALL of the fun. So if the person you’re playing is grumpy about who or what you play, it doesn’t matter. You play for your own enjoyment, not theirs. So do what gets you all the fun.
@RemoteIslandSyndrome
@RemoteIslandSyndrome 3 жыл бұрын
MTG worked out that fun isn't necessarily a zero sum game a long time ago though. The player psychographics can illustrate a situation where, for instance, a player gets their opponent down to just 3 HP with their crazy land only deck - and is satisfied with getting that far and is having a good time - while the other player fucking WINS and therefore also has fun.

It's something I've noticed with some of my friends and acquaintances. They salt and rage when they lose or play poorly. And the only time they seem to be enjoying the game is when they're winning. It feels less like they want to play the game and more like they just want a winning simulator. It's not exactly bad it's just irritating when I enjoy the moment to moment play of the games and the emergent silliness that can happen.

Back when I played hero shooters, I rarely played the characters I liked the most. There was always a reason: they didn't fit the team composition, or it was a bad map for them, or I was afraid my random teammates were going to complain (a stupid to worry, but I worried about anyway)... and while I learned to like who I played as, I never played who I liked. Most of the time, I was more frustrated than anything else, and I gave up the entire genre for this reason (plus some other ones). Almost at the same time, Strive came out. Never played a fighting game in my life, but I decided to give it a try, and I picked May. Not gonna lie, Disaster of Passion and Totsugeki memes influenced my choice (also, shoutout to lastcody), and her being high tier doesn't hurt, but I honestly like the anchor-swinging sky pirate for herself. I want to try out others too, but when and if I want. Not limiting my character choices because of some arbitrary reason is the most fun I had in a long time in a competitive game.

@@HighLanderPonyYT Oh yeah, definitely. It's ironic, really, I was very afraid of losing in 1v1 games and played team games to share the "responsibility" in the match. However, after finally playing a fighting game, there's no fear anymore: I lost because of a mistake, and I can learn from it. In a team loss, I couldn't always tell if it was my mistake or someone else's that caused the loss, thus making the situation even more unpleasant. It's crazy how the mind creates some preconceptions and stick to them, even without reason.

I love this. Strive is my first fighting game, and I instantly gravitated to Nago because he's super cool and because since I was a bit overwhelmed by aerial movement, not having an air dash or second jump actually was very nice since it simplified that aspect of things (also: because I was a scrub, I could rationalize doing simpler combos as just being responsible with my blood management lol). Since then, I've warmed to air movement and have tried some other characters, but still have the most fun with Nago, so I play him, and plan on doing so even if they nerf him into the ground. I'm actually hoping they bring Slayer in, though. I picked up Xrd and played around with Slayer and had a ton of fun, it's just a shame the online isn't great. Slayer and Robo-Ky look like the most fun characters to play from the earlier games.

i play goldlewis in strive and was so frustrated at first thinking he was a bad character before i got more comfortable with playing as him and learning combos, pressure, and neutral against a wider variety of characters, but after getting over that initial feeling i can go against characters like i-no or axl and still have a blast because i understand what im doing a lot better and having a great time cuz i just enjoy the character with their strengths and flaws as they are. the only things i had a problem with being skyfish being kinda worthless in a lot of situations and his fastest button not being great at interrupting got fixed, and i think he's a fine character now i picked up bullet in bbcf cuz she looks simple to understand and fun as fuck to play and its my first time getting into the game, so for fun i looked up a tier list and saw she was like, bottom 3 in the roster, and i could'nt help but think "okay even if she DOES suck im probably gonna have more fun playing her than trying to pick a top tier i dont enjoy so whatever" really enjoying bbcf so far after that decision

I think what he was trying to get at is that the character that has the playstyle you like also being a top tier is more conductive to fun then having the character you like being bad. IE I probably would have enjoyed old Melty Blood more if the character who's playstyle I resonated with most wasn't Neco-arc, because I love Neco-arc but I don't have fun going 1-30. Same thing with Mariah in Jojo, I think she's the character that fits my style but also I have never won a single game out of the several days I mained her. These are exaggerated examples, but the idea is that if you have fun with a character and they are good, you might be having more fun then a person that loves a character but doesn't have fun or struggles more with their win condition.

Wtf Sajam! Chess, Blazblue, now Runeterra? CAN’T ESCAPE FROM CROSSING FATE!!! You’re playing all of the things I love. I just recently got back into Runeterra myself. The ONLY reason I didn’t grind it hard before was because I was playing fighting games, BRs, and MTG Arena and I couldn’t squeeze in another grindy game in my schedule. The F2P model is great imo, but you still have to grind if you want cards. Honestly, I think being a content creator/streamer would give me too much stress. Comments like the one you mentioned, I feel like it’s easy to misinterpret intent. You probably get a bunch of hateful comments, and then one person tells what they think is a joke, and it can easily be taken the wrong way. There are definitely a bunch of haters though. Not denying that. My friends and I poke fun at each other for character choice, but it’s not malicious. HOWEVER, there was one dude that played SoulCalibur with us and he’s just not fun to be around. Completely toxic, because he doesn’t understand what’s going on so he blames the person for choosing the character, and it turns personal. I wanted to help him learn the game, but I got tired of the outbursts towards the actual person he was playing. His behavior was so unacceptable.

One of the rare examples where balance ruined a game for most people is Overwatch, double shield meta. Imagine playing an FPS where most of the gameplay is shooting at a wall until it breaks than having a few seconds to kill something then repeat and hope someone gets bored and moves out of cover. Then the tanks are forced to play the least popular(and least fun) tank if you don't want to get rolled or have people flame you. Supports just sit behind the tanks waiting for someone to take damage, spam damage into the enemy shields and push a single button invincibility aoe sometimes. Plus it was easy to do so you got it like every other game whether it was average plat or Top 500
