For those who are bad chess players like myself, the "blunders" in Friendly mode are fine for a few reasons. 1) You still need to be able to capitalize on the blunders; 2) the computer will try to make up for it, so you're not out of the woods; and 3) you can easily just choose a different move for the computer, something you think it should have done instead or use the hint function to see what better moves the computer had and choose one of those. You can also change the level to Challenging mid-game or end-game. After all, this is just a computer, so you don't gain or lose brownie points by manipulating a move every now and then. But for beginners, if you just play through a computer blunder, you might find that it wasn't a blunder at all and you get caught in a trap! Here's a couple of tips: 1) Don't overuse the hint function and play the computer suggested moves too often (or at all) - you'll throw off the adaptive play by making the computer think you're better than you really are; 2) If you want to take back several moves, it's best to change it to Analysis Mode first and reverse/replace positions using the arrow buttons and following the e-ink board - otherwise the display is going to keep showing the computer's move every time it's the computer's turn to move which gets confusing when you are trying to go back; 3) use your own chess pieces by placing circular metallic stickers (a roll of 1000 stickers is cheap) on the bottom of the pieces - works like a charm and the pieces are less slippery than the pieces that come with board; and 4) If you want to set up positions on the board for study or whatever, it's easiest to just start from the new game position in Analysis Mode and just start moving or removing pieces one by one - the computer will know if a piece was removed or relocated - this is easier than going into the menu settings and selecting one by one each piece type and color you are placing on the board (I think). Overall, I think this board is great despite some quirks and limitations - the battery lasts forever, it has a large playing field with thin bezels, the interface (and ease of take backs and choosing alternative computer moves) is excellent, adaptive play works great if you're okay with artificially ignoring/overcoming/dealing with blunders now and then, and you'll never have any connection issues. Just power up and play. But, yes, it would be nice to have an upgrade option to connect to apps and export games - I'm sure a lot of people would pay extra for that if given a choice.

Only problem with this board is that for lower rated players (1000 or lower) it is very difficult. My uncle who is about 1000 has 0 wins and 9 losses on the friendly difficulty, other then the user friendliness it’s a great board. Thanks for showing me this board!

That Chess-up board seems like one of the better products for lower rated players, as it has that fancy lighting system showing you which moves are bad and good. I don't know how customizable the difficulty is. I have been tempted to buy it, but I already have two chess computers.

@@michaelbauers8800 Hi, Michael..., I own a new ( ChessUp Chess Computer ) and I love it..., so do my family and friends ! ! All family and friends of all ages, enjoy and love playing and learning about chess on the new ( ChessUp Chess Computer ) and every firmware software update, it just keeps on getting better and better ! ! The different colored squares light up and actually tell you a lot of information about your chess play and what to do and what ( NOT ) to do... It is a learning experience... * The only problem that I have is..., I can't get on my own ( ChessUp Chess Computer ), because everyone else is playing on the chessboard and learning... Hmmm... not needing a connection is a bonus for me, but here's hoping it has a good, strong ELO level to give you a very good game!

In your honest opinion, what would you prefer more to someone learning chess and would like to take it more seriously. DGT centaur or Square off pro? Thanks in advance!
@katzenpapa
@katzenpapa 2 жыл бұрын
They both can be very good. Honestly, its hard to say which board, since depending on what you value, either board could work for you. The Sqaure Off Pro has more AI levels, and its adaptive AI seems a bit better. The AI on the Centuar is good only at Chellenging (or expert) mode, but that could be a bit much depending on one's rating. You can do position set up with either board. Square has Online play where the Centuar does not. So the question to you is, do you want to study positions the most, play against the AI, or play online? Its hard to recommend one over the other in general, but if you have specific goal in mind it might make it easier for me to recommend one over the other. Cheers!

By the way, what is the ELO of this machine? Does it use Stockfish program [if so, which version, please? At the time of this comment, we're up to version 17 I believe ].
@katzenpapa
@katzenpapa 2 ай бұрын
I don't know the ELO varies because it trying to play against your playing strength in any mode. Just some of the higher level modes make less mistakes than a lower playing mode. I think that it probably at its peak might play at about 2200 ELO. The version of the stockfish is probably 7 or 8 or some version of that.

Thanks for sharing this. What's your level rating? Do you think that in challenge mode it will provide enough challenge for a 1900 elo rated player?

I am about 1900 OTB. I would say that the challenge and the expert modes would be a good challenge for you at 1900. Hope this helps!

I love that this is standlone. It's nice it has it's own internal batteries. Price is reasonable. I didn't like it's lack of options, so I bought a computer from Millenium chess. But I ended up deciding I wanted piece recognition, which meant I bought a pricey Millenium, where the battery is one piece of hardware, the computer another, the board a third. So not very user friendly in that sense. But I really like it, and if you mainly use it at home, you don't need a battery pack. There's a lot of options now for chess computers which is great. But some are not standalone, you need a phone. Not a huge deal, but a lifetime of working with technology has made me distrust products which are reliant on other technology to function.

Love your videos and the great new technology that is coming out for chess. How responsive is this board compared to the square off pro in terms of speed and capturing of pieces? I saw in an earlier that you have to capture pieces in a specific way on the square off pro otherwise it won’t register. Also, can you save the pgn if you play against an opponent in person?
@katzenpapa
@katzenpapa 2 жыл бұрын
Hello and thanks! The board is pretty good in response as it has no major issues that I am aware of when capturing pieces. From time to time it seems like it's a small issue, but I think it has more to do with making sure you set the pieces down in the middle of the square. On these boards and the the square pro boards you do not need to take in a specific order. You can move the capturing piece first or remove the piece to be captured first. It's on my old chess board where you have to go in a specific order. In other words, moving the piece that will do the capturing first. Also, you cannot save pgn file from this board. Cheers!
