I would love a whole series based on the strumming hand alone and technique to just keep that motor running. As someone aspiring to be a solid rhythm player this lesson alone has helped so so much!

Yep - terrific idea... Speaking from advanced intermediate beginner land (😂) - it is tricky for me to figure out keeping the strumming hand pendulum going and the rhythm actually dictated by the rhythm of the muting / fretted chords from the fretting hand. I can sort of get a "groove" with it at times but I don't think I have an efficient practice strategy for it...

This is EXACTLY what I have been searching for. I played for years and only concentrated on playing lead. My rhythm was never there. Took a couple year hiatus and have been focusing strictly on rhythm, holding the pick correctly, blah blah. Going to incorporate these into my daily repertoire. Cheers 🦍 🦍

Whenever I think about a Bo Diddley beat, I remember this quote I read about John Entwistle, that he hated Magic Bus because they would stretch it out (like on Live at Leeds) and he was stuck playing a simple Bo Diddley line for ten minutes! Great lesson today, Eric!

Thanks for teaching what you do the way you do! My mantra in this order: It’s not what the note, it’s when the note. When in Rome, pick a chord tone. Scales are colorful tones adjacent to a chord. Bonus: if you want to play a phrase for me, consult the melody.

Hi Eric, re: your note at the beginning about more experienced players finding these things easy. As one of them I often find it helpful to go back to basics, if I’m struggling with a particular song or riff. You never know when you might pick up on something you’ve missed or simply a new approach to an already acquired skill. I would never consider myself above learning something simple. I was with my guitar teacher in a cafe recently. While we were waiting to be served, a young guy came in with a guitar case. Not missing an opportunity my teach said ‘hey guitarist, here’s my card hit me up if you fancy’ to which the guy replied ‘I’ve been playing 15 years, I don’t think there’s anything you can teach me’ needless to say we beat the shit out of him. (Not really)

Just realised where Wilko Johnson (Dr Feelgood) developed his ''unique'' style. Combo of Bo Diddley and a guitarist called Mick Green (Johnny Kidd & the Pirates) who taught him to use short riffs in amongst the strumming - apparently this guy also influenced Townsend. It is simple and consistent down-up but like Nile Rodgers the genius part is the damping and the subtle hammer-ons that create the groove.
