That's smokin', thanks for sharing. I met Max in Toronto in the late '80s when I was a teenager. Had a nice long conversation with him. You've motivated me to practice hard-and smart!

Quincy, no drum teacher makes me want to drop what I'm doing and run down to my drum set the way you do. Thank you for the inspiration! Slightly related story: I took a Jazz History course once (after I had given up on being a music major), and in a mid-term paper I transcribed Max's neat 4-bar fill from "Move" as an example of "theme and variation" on the drums. The professor loved it and I ended up helping him with a bit of research for a paper he was doing on Baby Dodds!

Hey Supa Q from Ned in Spain Again. Wowee ! These are some classic Max moves and sounds, so well laid out and played by you. You make these and the Philly Joe riffs swing so sweetly and demonstrate how they transform depending on your speed and placement. I agree too that getting a handle on the 6 stroke roll is essential . Thanks again again and again. Keep cool and stay well.

Always good to hear from you Nutty! Those cats were genius and were just scratching the surface but at least a little Max and Philly Joe can go a long ways! Btw staying cool in Texas at this time the year ain’t easy but I’ll do my best:)

Thank you so much for giving these phrases out! If you don’t know, I have to play in the style of Max Roach for my TMEA All-State Jazz Audition! That’s because we have to play Stockton Helbing’s “The Etude Also Waltzes”, maybe you can get him up on a video again :) lol!

Hi Quincy, I have just finished a transcription of a Bill Stuart solo from the Modern Drummer Festival 2008. Would you mind taking a look at it, since some of that stuff is hard to notate and I‘d like to get some feedback on that. Best, Christian from Germany
