I'm not sure if it is on steam yet I think when I got it, it was a direct download freebie on one of the humble bundle monthly choices, it's a game called Torii I downloaded it and played it because I heard the developer was argentinian, a country next to mine. Man, did the game needed more time in the oven I haven't looked if the dev improved the game, I'd like to know, the concept was not bad but the game was not finished at all when they published back then. I hope they put more work into it and my comment reads as dumb now. EDIT: Just went into steam and the game has positive reviews, I'm glad they stuck to it and it's in a better state now, maybe I should give it another chance now.

Extremely odd choice that Code Shifter's art style (or at least the character sprites) seems to match that of the Disney "Tangled" cartoon series. The Stella character looks exactly like Rapunzel. I guess they probably just had the same artist on crew, but kind of a weird visual choice.

Personally speaking, I reckon kid's games should be held to the same standard when it comes to the quality of entertainment given to them. I think it can be condescending to treat kid's entertainment with 'kids gloves', as if they should have things of lesser quality because they're too young to know otherwise. Not to mention, if the quality of something is allowed to slide, then it can give devs a license to put out more poor quality content, albeit with a shield to excuse away criticism.
@anonymous-wk1nh11 ай бұрын
Honestly the biggest reason why I don't think kids' games should be held to a lower standard is because, if kids grow up seeing those games as "good" or as the standard for modern games, then those kids end up setting a low bar for other games once they grow up. For example, if they're overwhelmed with microtransactions on games like Fortnite, they'll be more tolerant to scummy p2w/p2p features on other games too because they've grown used to it.
@RozettaVyper11 ай бұрын
Definitely agree. Children need high quality games, tv shows, books and movies more so than adults. Good quality entertainment shapes the child's mind in a positive manner. When they are teens and adults, they will easily recognize garbage and have developed good creativity skills. Good entertainment for kids is important period. This is the case of most Outright Games games. Some are genuinely bad, but most are just exceedingly mediocre and not that bad for like $7 or less. Clearly the budget is like $5, a pizza and a prayer. Some are genuinely okay or pretty good (with the caveat that they’re licensed games). The only one with genuine content they’re released that I’ve played is the DC game they made. Not Super Pets. It’s pretty long, albeit repetitive. Neat art style. Full voice acting (rarity for their games; including Super Pets which was based on a movie so idk why they couldn’t get clips from the movie to cram into the game). Even has some animated 2D scenes. Not sure if they came from a show or movie or what but it was nice to play one that felt like a real game with content to match’s The first Dragons game was decent but also short. Most of their games are 1-4 hours of content. Even at $40 that’s insane.

@YouMakeMyMotorRun5 ай бұрын
While kids' entertainment does require a different presentation (we can't have kids playing God of War for some reason, eh)... I do agree that it does need an equally or even higher standard in regards to quality. Games in particular... they don't really need to be difficult, everyone agrees that a 5 year old kid wouldn't particularly enjoy a Dark Souls-esque punishing game... but the mechanics do have to be engaging. There has to be a depth and a rewarding system to play with... otherwise, it's just as you said: a chore that gets force-fed to kids that haven't had the time to develop a taste.
@jotun.6164 ай бұрын
@@YouMakeMyMotorRun I wouldnt say it requires it, but otherwise we are in agreement. I never worried too much about my kids getting mild to moderately graphic entertainment, and they all turned out great. Cos proper parenting gave them an understanding of entertainment vs real world. Hell, im from the VHS era, and we still managed to get our hands on porn lol! Thats why its important now more than ever to explain adult concepts to them at an early age.
@YouMakeMyMotorRun4 ай бұрын
@@jotun.616 I sorta agree... maybe "require" was too strong of a word... but I do feel certain ways of presentation or interactivity are too strong for unsupervised children. Mainly cause they haven't had time to develop the experience and critical thinking to absorb and truly enjoy the experience yet. It's not only about violence and nudity (I agree that children are way too exposed to that anyway and should work on understanding it and knowing the right place for it early on), but also about certain mechanics or themes that may be either too overwhelming or too absorbing when one hasn't developed the abilities needed to interact with it yet. Overall it's not a matter of quality, but to always put an effort in knowing what the target audience is, and working for their needs and capacities.

@@YouMakeMyMotorRun Ehhhh, I wouldn't agegate complex concepts as a whole from kids. I know when I was a tiny tot, something that was too complex for me to understand was either discarded, or I paused and dragged my dad over and replayed it before asking him what that meant. He was good at ELI5-ing and honestly, it made me feel smart and encouraged me to be more curious and ask more about complicated topics when I did notice them. And for certain mechanics: you vastly underestimate the determination and memorization skills of a kid. Most of us were kids and we SOMEHOW got through some of the most OBTUSE stuff. Hell, at 13 I got through most of FF7 despite having a massive language barrier (I wasn't bilingual enough to recognize more than colors and simple verbs and pronouns in English) that stopped me from even understanding the tutorials in depth, and I still managed to work out a few Materia combos and the general gist of "the corporation that rules the town is evil, the poor people are at the bottom, the rich people are at the top, AVALANCHE is a terrorist group". And when I was a very young child I watched and read stuff like Asterix and Scrameustache and Astro Boy, the concepts there were also complex and sometimes for an older child (to say nothing of the Gamebooks I played and the fact I read Animorphs when I was like 10). Kids aren't a monolith and don't all have the same upbringing, but you shouldn't shy away from complexity just because it's a kid. If anything, the only thing kids need mechanically is a difficulty setting that gives them an appropriate difficulty, and maybe an accessibility option or two to break down complex words into simpler synonyms (like how Japanese has furigana over kanji in games meant for younger players, like in Bokura No Taiyou), and something like turbo mode to spare a kid from getting future carpal tunnel syndrome. anyway this is my yapping 2 cents.

I'd forgotten about Code Shifter. Somewhat interestingly, a similar model has just been used for another Arc System Works game, BlazBlue Entropy Effect. In the case of Entropy Effect, apparently the developers had been creating their own original property Dead Cells style game, and somehow ended up with a license to turn it into an official BlazBlue "spin-off" using BlazBlue character assets. The core game is pretty decent, but it is also very obviously some other game that just had the BlazBlue sprites inserted. Like Code Shifter, it justifies the BlazBlue character game as being a virtual world, and also has a bunch of boring "real world" wrapper stuff involving an original character.

The only thing I don't like in the presentation is the main character, whom looks still in some animations. 3) Because of all these things, the presentation is like eye candy rather than an eye sore to me.

As a Walking Dead fan who hasn't had a good game since Telltale, I wanted Destinies to be so damn good. But we have Saints and Sinners, so that's a plus. The problem is that every time a non-telltale Walking Dead game comes out it has like, none of the stuff we want out of it. Overkill's game is a great example of this. Their cinematic trailers showed us a gritty, dark, setting where we'd be playing as some down-to-earth characters trying to survive. Instead we got Back-4-Blood 0.5. Which is nowhere close to what we thought it would be. Granted it was made by the people that did Payday, so maybe that's on me for hoping for something they just don't do.

Honestly, that Walking Dead game would've benefited if they just based it on the graphic novel instead of the TV show. That way they don't need to try getting the likeness of the actors and their voices.

Yea but its gamemill so I didn't expect much lol the funny thing is that 3 original voice actors for the walking dead TV show did do their voices in that game. Lori T dog and Beth are all the original actors.

A game like lightning fast but actually works and still occasionally gets updated is Wolf quest. You of course, play as a wolf. You go through a wolf life cycle of finding a mate. Having pups and raising them. Then you can pick to play as one of the pups you raised. I think you get some state bonuses if you picked a good mate and raised the pups well. It'd a little silly looking but honestly a nice time dump.

The Lightning Fast game looks like a rip off clone of another game called Wolf Quest. Used to play it a lot when I was younger and they even have a definitive addition available on Steam if you wanted something that is similar. It is probably a bit dated now, and I haven't played the new version but if I remember correctly it was a game made by a zoo for education purposes.

Would you ever review Two Worlds? Back when I was just getting into games all I heard about that game was that it was awful, but I looked at some reviews recently and it sounds like it was actually a promising but janky game with bad voice acting, and that there's plenty of fun to be had playing it. I won't be playing it anytime in the near future because I just started Pathfinder WOTR, but I'm thinking of playing it next.

For the Walking dead, the model not looking like the actors is a common thing to not pay the right to use their image, even if it's not them performing, you would have to pay to use their face, and it's probably REALY expensiv, I mean it also happened with the Avangers game a few years back, and that game had WAAAAY more budget than this one, obviousely.

The reason max was barely used in the grinch game is because the game supports multiplayer and max is the character for the second player.

If you want an idea how bad The Walking Dead game was, they couldn't get Merele's VA Michael Rooker for it. They had to use a sound-a-like. You know what game got him instead? Crime Boss: Rockay City. When he'd rather be in "we have Payday at home", you know you've got some garbage on hand.

so Code Shifters was apparently developed by a company called Land Ho!, whose biggest property seems to be a horse racing gambling arcade game (these indeed exist in Japan), and they also apparently developed some of the Just Dance games, but only some of them? weird

Kids games should be held to an equal standard in terms of gameplay just not story content. Ripping off kids is probably the scummiest thing you can do. If you were like me growing up you only got games for Christmas, on your birthday, or maybe for a good report card. Getting a bad game as an adult isn't really a big deal. As a kid it meant you probably weren't touching your console for another six months.
