I loved this video, and I don't mean to offend anyone when I say this, but in all honesty this was more of the mechanic of "how" to do a back dash cancel, but it wasn't actually executed correctly. Unfortunately there are players of very high ranks in Tekken 7 (top 5% playerbase) who still do not have the mechanics to KBD (Korean Back Dash), even players who have played for years. I even know people who can death combo but STILL can't back dash correctly. It's EXTREMELY difficult to master movement, a professional player could defeat people with combo knowledge by only using a 10frame Jab, left punch, and movement alone. In saying that, the creator MF, does explain how to back dash cancel correctly, and it's all a matter of practice and consistency. As a newcomer, to Tekken 7, the movement he used in game was actually really really good. If MF watched just a few guides on optimizing combos, pokes and punishers, he could have easily made it to Warrior rank with Noctis within 100 games given his innate mechanical ability.

@@LiamNancarrow Not everyone is using a Korean stick, I believe that Lud is playing on a controller which IMO is a pretty bad time for a consistent KBD combined with other subsequent inputs in comparison to a mixbox, hitbox, arcade etc. I think it's very unlikely Lud would have made it to Warrior on Noctis in the span of 100 games given how mentally draining Tekken can be on new players if they're not taking time off to decompress and recollect their mental.(hence possibly why he went back to 1st dan after spending a considerable amount of time in mentor.)

This genuinely might be my new go to video for showing new people who want to play FGs but don't yet how to get into them, and that the learning process can take time. I love the little insights, like mentioning how that certain things are bad habits that work early on but at higher ranks are bad, or just how learning even the most basic two hit combo is a big achievement. Definitely a fantastic video.

I just recently started a new account for more custom slots, and it’s crazy how many Smurfs there are. I’m usually a red-purple ranks player and I’m finding that these Smurfs are better than most blue ranks. Who knew to get better at the game, you had to play at lower ranks.

@@alphonsowillis6942 I think you're just underestimating the skill of lower rank players. This game has a lot of plateaus where you need to learn a bunch to get higher in ranks. So you can have a solid grasp of fundamentals but still get blown up by gimmicks of characters you don't know.

Ok - let me tell you 1. jabbing too much in tekken is bad. It can be ducked, sidestepped or sidewalked or crushed. Mix it with d/f +1 which is a mid. 2. you don’t duck throws, you break them. Ducking throws is BAD too. You WILL get set up. 3. Kazuya’s hellsweep (the low you were complaining about) needs to be launch punished when you block it, but you can also crush it or sidewalk left at range 2.

Tekken seems simple because each limb has a corresponding button. Other fighting games sometimes simply use 2-3 buttons. Even direction inputs in tekken aren't usually complex

For the beginners reading this, in the beginning you'll lose a lot..figure out why and have a laugh or two. Keep these 2 things in mind and you'll enjoy learning the game more. Thank you for posting this. You approached it the same way I always do with any fighting game. Go to practice. Memorize a few moves. Go online and play. Rinse and repeat.

Most characters have pretty similar basic tools in Tekken but it takes hundreds of hours to get used to how they interact with each other. For example, on Noctis' 22222 string, new players won't know what to do and intuitively try and hit you mid string, or try punishing when it ends. But to a good player, 5 consecutive hits in a string is really memorable. They're not worried about getting hit with a stray low, and will patiently hold block the entire string, casually remember where either the consecutive highs are or the low is, and then launch you or low parry you two rounds later when you think they forgot about it. At first you get hit with everyone's BS, but eventually people can't even show you their BS because your basic movement and default pokes run it all over. Great video, hope you play more.

I 100% agree with your first sentence. The fundamentals aren't too hard to understand. Getting carried in the air by 4 combo strings every round really drills it in to your head that, THAT'S how to play tekken. When you're in the air you're at your most vulnerable because you can't do anything while airborne. After you learn your character inputs, strengths and weaknesses then what naturally should come after is learning the matchups. Unfortunately something you cannot learn or improve on is your reaction time. Everybody in the gaming community knows how your reaction time gets worse as you age. In Korea you are considered passed your prime when you're over 25 which sounds so insane but it's just how it is

Getting launched four times a round will definitely teach you the block button lol. Fortunately there are only three things in Tekken you have to react to: unblockables, throws, and snake edges. These all have half-second response windows, which is easily doable for an average middle-aged person.

I feel like people overestimate how hard Tekken is. Characters have big move sets but you only really need to know their key moves, you don’t need to know a character’s entire moveset to do well with them. Also combos are much more forgiving and accessible, you can do most optimal combos somewhat easily in comparison to combos in SF or KOF where most require good execution to pull off.

As someone who plays both Melee and Tekken at semi-competitive level, this was a very enjoyable watch. I love how Ludvix sometimes shows signs of understanding of defensive mechanics like movement and is able to incorporate it to his gameplay with relative ease, but also struggles in memorizing moves and combos. For real though, there's so much stuff to learn in Tekken, and without a personal mentor you really don't know what you should be focusing on, and it's easy to get overwhelmed, but I'm glad you enjoyed the learning process.

Sometimes simplified movesets are harder to play. SF and mk come to mind. King of fighters I haven't really played but there's only 3-4 buttons. Other 3D fighters I haven't played in so long and I'm not familiar with how combos are done.

I've been playing Tekken for as long as I can remember. I'm currently in the purple/blue ranks and my advice is simple. Learn the basics and I promise you will improve immediately. Blocking, punishing and movement. I cannot stress this enough lol. Don't waste your time like I did! Practice and you will have so much fun with this game. the big thing about doing something like this is willing to learn. you went through many steps and adjustments. The highest point of fighters IMO is learning. Winning is only the result of what you have learned and losing is just an opportunity to learn how to get better.

This has been educational. When I picked up Tekken 7, I hadn't played Tekken in like 10 years, Tekken 5 being my last one. I was autistic about everything, understanding every move on my move list and optimal combos. By the time I decided that I was ready for lowest level ranked and not just practice mode and AI matches, I was so well honed that I win-streaked straight to yellow ranks.

lots of begineers make the mistake of spamming their rage art as a panic move hoping to turn the tide of the fight. since almost all the rage arts are blockable, if you know what to do, then is an almost assured round.

As someone also new to playing tekken competitively I very much enjoyed this video and I hope lots of newbies watch this and feel inspired to play and Kazuya's hellsweep low is what you would call an un-reactable low because the start up frames are so fast so you pretty much have to guess if he's gonna go low or not but if you notice your opponent does the hellsweep a lot from neutral or when your waking up just stay blocking low in those situations and you'll get a big punish

Really, really cool, informative and enjoyable Video! Very important things for beginners: don't let yourself be fooled by "Tierlists" or "Best Characters"... these lists are not for new players, but rather for veterans. Always at first, pick your characters by style or design, so you atleast are somewhat intrigued by the character itself. This was one of the best advice my friend gave me, that got me into Tekken. Also, don't try to force yourself to learn combos in the first couple of hours. Especially in Tekken, you should at first try to step up your poke game, since the right pokes can give you huge life leads (except against Paul, there is no life lead against Paul KEKW). Also: don't be scared of side-stepping. My go to plan to learn combos in new fighting games and overall learn new characters in certain fighting games: try to figure out how to do the moves of a combo (by themselves), try to figure out what the recovery times feel like, look at how much damage the moves do and try to put it together, piece by piece. If you do a lot of missinputs, try focus on this first. Try to find out what habits you developed and if they maybe even correlate to your missinputs. These are just really small tips but these could make a huge impact, atleast they did for me. Tekken is incredibly complex and is arguably even the most complex fighting game on the market. Everyone started like a total scrub in this game. I highly recommend the tutorial videos of AvoidingThePuddle if you want to get more insight on the core mechanics of this game.

Very interesting video, I forget how T7 doesn't teach you a damn thing. One thing I noticed is that you consistently drop your combo whenever you land a screw attack, you kind of just freeze and let them get up. If you land a screw, thats when you do your combo ender.

It was really fin watching you learn the game from scratch. I liked the evolution from starting with one of the main characters (Kazuya) to switching to a character that gels more with you. I also liked the evolution of you learning what tactics worked and what didn't. It shows that noctis was a really good addition as a guest character because 1)Its a character that is quite well known and 2) the character is easy to pick up and play so you can actually focus more on learning the actual game and less on learning the character. I would like you to try Age of Empires 2 as a test. Its a fun game which can be quite daunting when first starting out.

Combos, guaranteed follow ups, whiff punish, and punish launch punishable moves are important. But I’ll also stress a good 50/50 game. You can easily get by on 50/50s, especially safer ones that knock down. You can bring 50/50 mentality to poking, mixing grabs with mids, etc. Now this is getting advanced, but I’d get comfortable with jab, with 1,2 and df1. Try to punish with 1,2 when you’re unsure of block frames. 1,2 is better than a full 10 frame string if you’re not confident it will hit because if it gets blocked you’re safe. And if it hits you’ll be plus frames and very close depending on your character (being close can allow command throws). Also use these moves for poking/interrupting. **Learn to hit confirm them**. Learn the frames on hit, follow it with a mixup for people who block and frame trap people who mash. All this goes for dick jab too, but you only use this for interrupt (and it’s really good for that). If they are blocked, you’re like -2, you can side step or sidewalk, but don’t press buttons until you get the hang of it! It will negate the step all together if you press as their move is coming out, you must wait for the whiff then punish. If they don’t press anything no big deal, you can backdash and maybe get them to whiff, or no backdash and throw out a quick CH move because they’ll likely be ready to press when they see sidewalk into nothing. These are fundamentals and what I find fun. In all honesty for T7 just learn frame tight offense/pressure and rush every opponent down no matter what.

As a person who plays Tekken competitively: It is very hard to memorize all the moves and sometimes you'll forget about the tools that could've helped you. Even though Tekken is hard, it's fun. I play as Law (one of the fun characters) and it was difficult to learn specific stuff. I manly watched tournaments and tutorial videos just to get the hang of things. Btw in practice mode you can go onto move list and press "Y" (Xbox One) or "triangle" (PS4) to display the move list in-game so that you won't have to keep pausing to go to move list every time (same rules apply to sample combos). When it comes to big characters, it doesn't matter if they're big (besides the big hit boxes) big characters have the same "High" "Med" and "Low" like other characters. When it comes to choosing your characters, choose whoever you like Some characters in Tekken are easy to pick up and play like Law, Josie, Katarina, Bob, and Kunimitsu (there are some other characters that are easy too but I decided to choose the ones that are very easy to pick up. The other characters like Lars and Master Raven are easy but require some skills to really make the characters work). The character you chose in the beginning was actually hard to learn. You would have to study Kazuya like a mad man. Of course you change to Noctis who is an easy character to pick up and play. Noctis is a long range fighter who can beat out characters like Law for example since Law has to get up on your face to do anything You mentioned low parries.....well Noctis's weapons while using lows can't get low parried by players so you're lucky, they can only block it. Anyway it was nice seeing a noob grow into something. You know a little bit of the basics. I had fun watching you play this 😊

Use follow up moves after screw attacks, in my experience there are 3 components to combos in Tekken, the launcher, pick up, screw and follow up, figure out which pick up is used for which launcher and get a consistent follow up to your screw attack, your punishment is good and you'll tweak your game plan as you get better and you will make it out of blue ranks, you too good to be still in the Dans

Great video! It's really fun to watch someone learn something this new to them, I have one tip that you should consider learning about if you decide to try your hand at more fighting games: Don't throw your full combos out when the opponents block because it generally leaves you more open, learn to watch when the first hits are blocked or not and stop attacking if they are, that way, you don't give your opponent a clear window to punish you and you can later mix up your approach while you have them waiting for their turn. You did great though and you already have a good mindset for learning competitive games so I'm looking forward to see what's next!

i like that tekken 6 has the buttons color coded in the move list. yes there are different controllers and not every one has the same colors for buttons but right now I play on PS4 controller in tekken 6 and is still learning certain moves and combos.

When you were looking at combos in the training mode, you mentioned how hard it would be to remember the entire string. You can press the Y button, or whatever it's mapped to the bottom of the screen will tell you, and it will put the combo at the top of the training mode while outside the menu.

Just reached the end. Noctis is one of my favorite characters to play in this game, I think he's a really smart design that is fun for all skill levels. It was very interesting to see someone coming to realizations about the mechanics and what tools seemed good. Cool video.

Been playing fighting games my whole life and it’s nice to see new people get into them especially tekken and would love to see more variety of fighting games on this channel, but in case you’re not aware there is a feature in tekken training mode that lets you watch a combo and see how it’s properly done and timing of the commands, and there is a feature that will display the combo on your screen letting you practice it without having to pause and look at the move list.

@@Ludvix Yeah my bad i guess i overlooked that part but there is also a function called "display in game" that will let you display the inputs on the top of your screen in practice mode letting you practice that specific combo or move input freely in game without having to constantly pause the game to look at the moves list, even having a "Reset" command that will reset both fighters to starting position should you mess up the combo, idk if you knew about "Punishment Training mode" bc i didnt see it in the video but basically the game will recommend the best attacks for punishing character specific moves, basically does all the frame data math for you. This video was quite long so you may already know about these things but in case you werent i wanted to let you know bc it really helped me out a lot with practicing and stepping up the combo game lol. You can even set up specific situations like against wall/balcony break, wakeup attacks, etc.

Awesome video! I remember my time back in those ranks eating hellsweeps and snake edges like it's a buffet. Lmao. anyways, For those having a hard time remembering punishers. Just focus on two punishers as a start. your fastest Jab and your fastest launcher. You block a move that's new to you? launch punish it! It got blocked and didn't launch? Jab punish it next time. Your jab got blocked? Then it's a safe move. Also remember to try duck highs, characters usually have different punishers after ducking or blocking lows called while standing moves (usually denoted in tekken notation as WS). Once you got the hang of jab punishing and launch punishing (and doing the appropriate combos!) You can move on to adding more optimal punishers. Good luck out there!

Tekken's in game information is dogshit, but it has some of the best community resources I've seen on a character to character basis. Look up a character on KZbin and you'll come across 15 minute to 2 hour tutorials that cover everything notable about them, plus a healthy amount of beginner guides + theory.

It was really inteesting to see what a New player experience going into Tekken is like. Your mindset was perfect and you succesfully understood the basics of the game without any help and this is great. Thanks to you we can clearly see that tekken lacks a tutorial... i hope Tekken 8 fix that. Also, with your mindset, you could have reached a MUCH higher rank with the help of a "coach" or if you watched begginner video on youtube. But that wasnt the point, i get that. It was really frustrating to see you struggle and sometime reaching a wrong conclusion only because the game doesnt teach you anything to be good at it... i really enjoyed watching your Journey, thank you !

It was wise in a general sense that they found something that interested them and worked on it. Great mindset for improvement. I have a hunch they only gravitated towards the movement/tech skill stuff since they came from Melee though. Regardless it was really impressive how quickly he worked backdash cancels into his games! He was making people whiff with it long before he hit a full combo. Would it be wise for all Tekken noobs to focus on KBD before they learn the fundamentals, though? Probably not.

I think more Smash players should try Tekken. I found it easier to get into than other fighting games because there’s waaaay less of an air game (until you fight Akuma lol). And I feel like less bad habits from Smash carried over.

Diving into Tekken for the first time is daunting for sure but you did pretty decently! If there's one thing Tekken 7 is severely lacking it's training tools, though practice mode is still invaluable. Watching tutorials was basically a must when I hit a beginner plateau of my own, there's so much legacy tech that you can only learn through the community or analyzing replays.

This video was absolutely beautiful to watch. I really like that you went back to learn new moves to use once you got better and eventually got your combo down. You definitely would've gained a lot from attempting some of the sample combos in the move list once you started landing your combo, but I'd love to see you do Guilty Gear Strive as well.

I never played fighting games seriously, I was so happy the first time I did a EWGF or a combo because I genuinely thought I would never learn either. It is so much easier than what your brain makes it out to be, just practice hard and take breaks when you’re tired. Also don’t only try one character, I learnt devil Jin first but then realized I liked normal Jin better.

btw when ur opponent does a combo on you, theres a thing where if you spin onto the ground they basically get free reign to continue a combo; the time to tech off the ground from a spin takes a long time
