to get around the limitations, maybe they could edit that characters' sprites to invisible, and in case the player accidentally hits into them, clicking on them will show their dialogue but it'll allude to them being a ghost (something like "This prescence feels familiar, but I don't know what it is..."). it wouldn't literally remove the npc, but it would make them essentially go missing. or, editing their scheule so they just spawn in the far corner of the map out of bounds

Disturbingly enough, the Yandere Jazz mod does it surprisingly well, neber having her outright say anything until she attempts to kill Penny in the bathhouse. However its heavily implied that she feeds you a cake that uses blood instead of eggs, mind controls you, murdered a woman, and stole your things. Yes, from a child. That mod is truly disturbing.
