Hey all! I hope you enjoyed the video. I'm completely overwhelmed by the love and support this video has received, thank you! I recently put out another video titled "I Played Five Burnout Clones (and here's what I think!)" In the video, I play Need For Speed: Most Wanted 2012 and four other games I think you might like if you like Burnout. Check it out! Link: kzbin.info/www/bejne/iXyzepaaYpuIZrM

im late but algo brought me all i want to say is my kid actually had a PSP and I should have gotten it for that and we all had a DS but it looks like broken spy hunter lol we had every console version (I still have my Dreamcast - it would have been bomb af on that) and yeah remastered with more islands would be really cool - they remastered the orange box and TF2 still had the original glitches in it, just in 4k (starting to think that was actually intentional for Valve to yet again give M$ the finger); it was pretty hilarious but from Burnout 2 forward is THPS legendary status territory, *especially* the soundtracks. I have never understood why the franchise was killed or mothballed or whatever...

Its funny plenty of the bands on the soundtrack enjoyed this game while getting loaded. I remember playing Dominator bored before a show I was playing... I needed/ or didnt wanna blaze alone so I invited a dude who seemed chill to join in on some doobs. He later on turned out to be the singer from one of the bands. I told em truthfully.... i loved the song in game and Id even skip other bands who were more popular to hear theirs in game. The reason why EA had soo many punk bands on the soundtrack is a friend of mine dated a chick nicknamed "Ultragrrrl" who started a small indie label imprint off Island and was instrumental in getting some of those bands promo. Nightmare of you was one of the bands in FIFA 07... she helped with that. Now as to who the person was who put blink and afi and madden? I dunno or Story of the Year in NFS underground? Im not sure as I wasnt in the industry yet.

I sold my DS, big carrying case, and all my games to my little cousin for next to nothing just so I could buy a PSP. In hindsight, I wish I'd kept it, or at least charged him more than $80 for all that in 2006 lol. That said, I loved the PSP even more. I ended up playing Burnout Legends more than any other Burnout game. That, Twisted Metal: Head-On, Daxter, and Tekken Dark Resurrection were my first games and they absolutely amazed me at the time. The graphics truly shocked me in the mid 2000s. God of War: Chains of Olympus was also a technical marvel when it came out. Great system. All my DVDs, VHS tapes, games, and consoles were sold in a yard sale in 2010 by my parents while I was at college because I left them all at home and they needed to "free up space". I was asked if they could sell some of my "old toys" in the basement, to which I didn't give a second thought and said sure (I might have been a little drunk/high when they asked me too lol). Didn't realize it meant selling EVERYTHING I'D EVER SPENT MY MONEY ON from age 8-18. I bought all my consoles and most of my games myself from money I'd saved up from odd jobs, a $5 a week allowance from chores, babysitting for neighbors, and eventually pizza delivery. My parents definitely didn't realize or appreciate just how valuable all that stuff was to me, both financially and sentimentally. I had some games that would go for a lot more money today than I paid for them at the time. They essentially gave them all away for pennies. RIP my PS2, PSP, GC, N64, and Xbox 360. I miss them!

The thing about Burnout Paradise, is you can tell it was designed more with multiplayer in mind than the previous games and it showed. I had tons of fun in the multiplayer of Paradise, just doing challenges or racing randos. Then you had all the DLC which effectively breaks the balance of the single player because they wanted to give more toys (literal in some cases) for the multiplayer.

Paradise's big flaw was ultimately, that there were no course restrictions in the races. 8 Locations on the outer edges of the map, which means every race ends up funneling into the same optimal routes fairly quickly. If it weren't for that, it would be incredible. But like it is, it sort of wastes a lot of the map's potential.

I've been playing Burnout since the first game was released, and it's been one of my favorite childhood games. The series holds a special place in my heart, but I think many people are sleeping on Burnout 1 (Xbox). The first game in the series feels grounded, and raw. The cars aren't overly souped-up, making it feel like you're an illegal street racer breaking the law. I often compare the Burnout series to the Fast and Furious franchise. Both started small and grounded but became more over-the-top as they evolved. This progression isn’t a bad thing; in fact, it adds to their charm. The first Burnout game, for example, had impressive lighting and locations that set a cool atmosphere and mood for the courses, especially those set at night or in the rain. One thing that disappoints me about the later games in the series is that the first game was the only one that let you drive a large utility vehicles such as a bus or a tow truck in regular events. My ideal Burnout game would combine the atmosphere, continent locations, and heavy traffic design of the first game; the crash physics of Burnout 2; the soundtrack and aftertouch mechanics of Burnout 3; the traffic check, and shortcuts of Burnout Revenge; and the graphics of Burnout Paradise. Just wished there was another installment to excite my love for the franchise again.

Great vid! I grew up on burnout 3 so that was my jam for a long time. I think i had multiple save files with 500+ hours lol. If i had to list top 3 id say 3, paradise, revenge. 3 for blowing my 6 year old mind and being the first game i 100% (best soundtrack), paradise for loving the open world, and just played revenge this year for the first time and it was so nice to be transported back to my childhood. And traffic check was such a nice change!

Absolutely loved this video. Instant subbed!! To me personally Dominator ranks above them all purely because I used to play multiplayer with my (dearly departed) sister a lot! We'd spend hours and hours over the weekends. She'd even completed the campaign mode a few times herself. I also enjoyed Legends on the PSP. I liked the handling aspect + the vehicle selection. I think I finished the game within 4 days.

2 is my all-time favorite: simple and grounded (avoiding opponents and traffic was the point), the SoCal-Nevada inspired region interconnected by the various tracks, and the Pursuit mode, which was far better police action than in Need for Speed's artificial-feeling closed tracks. I always made it my goal to go through the entire list of tracks without ever wrecking myself or causing traffic pile ups stopping the target.

I played Takedown first but ended up really taking to Revenge. It just clicked with me far more. Its one of my favorite racing games of all time. The sense of speed, espscially at higher ranks is crazy. I feel as if its reminiscent of an era when games could just *be* fun and weren't trying to squeeze each and every last dollar out of you. Or trying to keep you playing until the day you die. I wish Takedown was backwards compatible on the xbox one like Revenge is.

I completely agree with you. Burnout 3 was my first my own game ever on PS2 (when i skip games that i got with PS2 Slim buying), and omg, my love for racing games is thanks to this game, truly. Nostalgia fits everytime i see Takedown. Then I got revenge and also dominator, when they came out, and same as you, I like Revenge the most. I think i played it and enjoyed it the most. It was upgrade from Takedown in everything. The only "bad" thing for me was the color scheme, it was too "orange" i guess. Same problem with Dominator. Great game, but little chaotic thanks to the colors, it was just too colorful. Years later Paradise came out and i was sooo happy, but yea, good old days were gone and i guess there wont be another game like Revenge and Takedown. What a time to be alive, really. Thanks a lot for this video, you unlocked a memory I thought was lost.

Really good retrospective. You do a good job highlighting what makes Burnout a damn good series. One thing to keep in mind about the first two games is that they were released by Acclaim, which was on its death bed, so Criterion didn’t have the same budget that it did with its EA releases. With Burnout 2, they did well enough to be picked up by EA after Acclaim went bust. Burnout Revenge was my favorite when it came to gameplay, but Dominator had my favorite soundtrack, especially hearing Killswitch Engage and Alice In Chains in the playlist. I went to a retro gaming expo last year, and I obliterated every record in Burnout Revenge in one race. Half of my time at the booth was racing, the other half was watching the animation for EVERY trophy I got in one race 😂

Burnout Paradise is a masterpiece. The only reason you didn’t appreciate it as much as you should have is because you didn’t experience the multiplayer to its fullest extent. It is one of the games I played the most on the PS3 and I still play it to this day. It’s a timeless game. The DLC content also expands on the existing map adding verticality and fun challenges that can be done with friends. It’s easily the best game in the series, and it being non-linear in its approach to gameplay and map design is what makes it so fun. You get to explore the world at your own pace.

For Burnout 3: Takedown, I played it on X-Box. The one thing I loved is any music that I copied to the system would show up in the game. To me, this gave me a MUCH better experience playing the game as I could have dozens of CDs of music copied to the system and play when racing. I usually disabled most of the in-game songs as I only liked a few. The one thing I HATED about Burnout 3 was the major rubberbanding AI. For many races, it got so bad, it even has it's own entry on TvTropes on the page "The Computer Is A Cheating Bastard" (no joke)". This is what it says about the game: 'Burnout 3: Takedown features broken one-way Rubberband AI in many of its events. When you're in the lead, driving perfectly and constantly boosting, the AI will be, as a helpful yellow pop-up caption exclaims, "right on your tail!" no matter how many times you wreck them. The moment you crash, they start to take an insurmountable 30-second lead that is nearly impossible to overcome.' I can 100% confirm this as I remember in some races, I crashed and was behind like 40 seconds. I was in a car that was WAY faster than the AI. Even driving damn near perfect, taking massive risks while boost and siding around corners, I could not catch up. The AI was most likely allowed to go like 2x faster than what their cars normally could when they got that far ahead. I learned it was just easier to restart the race if that ever happened because it was pretty much impossible to catch up falling that far behind. Still though, despite that, I loved playing Burnout 3. I don't completely remember, but I think I completed most of the game, getting a metal on mostly everything. Most of the events I did get gold (granted some of them took A LOT of attempts and retries) with some getting Silver, just not enough to get gold. Sometime soon, I need to go reconnect my original Xbox and play the game again. Since the save is on the HDD and I'm assuming it's fine, it should still have my save on it so maybe I can finally complete it. - Burnout: Legends: I did play the PSP version sometime in college but my god, the DS version... How did that even pass the "Yeah, let's ship this game" stage? - Burnout Revenge: I never got to play this one, but I might have to look into it. Some of the new additions look fun. I'll look up the Xbox 360 version as I would like the better framerate, with the bonus of better graphics over the PS2 version. - Burnout Dominator: I didn't get around to playing this one either. I have both a PS2 and PSP but just never played it. (Warning, slight rant about EA's TERRIBLE music censoring below): - Burnout Paradise: I do have this on PC and played it on and off. The thing that was very annoying is there is no easy way to play custom music on PC while in game. Yes, there is modding by replacing the soundtrack files but it's complicated and tedious. I know I could just play them through VLC, MPC, or just stream through Spotify, but it's not the same. Burnout 3 on Xbox actually let me skip tracks with the black/white buttons which was nice. I'm sure I could do this easier on consoles but still. The thing that was annoying with Burnout Paradise was they CENSORED the hell out of music just to get an E10+ rating which be BEYOND stupid. They should have just let it a Teen rating (just like Burnout 3) and allowed much more lyrics. I mean, Rocksmith 2014 is allowed to get away with saying "shit" in songs, so most things that aren't f-bombs should have been allowed in a T rating. I mean, they were censoring "hell", "damn" and other random lines for songs and that's pathetic. When the "radio edits" for songs played on my local radio (using a local 104.9 The X as an example), the songs were either not edited (nothing too bad said to require editing) or very loosely edited and allowed WAY more than the game did (cutting out f-bombs and some uses of shit, although some songs it slipped by for years until they realized it). Then again, this shouldn't surprise me of EA doing this. I mean, all I have to say is the Madden Edit of "Undead" by Hollywood Undead. That version was SOOO butched that 70 to 80% of the song is either muted or censored with effects. (If anybody wants a laugh, listen to the original version, then the madden version. You will probably be like "What the hell were they thinking putting this in a madden game that has a stricter E rating.)

Paradise and Revenge are incredible. Still play Revenge to this day. However Burnout 3 Takedown is the best burnout and the best racing game of all time and I will forever die on that hill. The Physics are incredible and more realistic, as far as realism goes. The soundtrack is arguably the best in the series. The replayability is endless. Yes, there’s no traffic checking and Revenge looks way better visually. But the sense of speed provided an experience no other Burnout can replicate. It is the perfect Burnout game. I have a copy of B3T on display in my house for a reason.

I have a lot of good memories of 3. Logged probably hundreds of hours on it both solo and multiplayer with one of my friends. When the video reached a later entry in the series and you said it was the peak, you got my attention for sure. I'd pretty much tuned out after I was done with 3, so I never heard of any of the games after that until a couple years ago. It's really cool to hear that there was basically a successor to 3. I'm not a fan of the era-specific visuals, but if it's otherwise an upgrade in most regards then I'd definitely like to try it one day. Crash mode is super important to me, so maybe I'd consider it to be the seasoning on the steak rather than the mashed potatoes. The racing is good for sure, but I don't think the game would have captivated me nearly as much without the dedicated crash mode. Great review! I hope there's more good content from you to come.

Great video. I remember being a kid and the only Burnout games I had were 1, Dominator and Paradise. It's weird seeing the series at its start and end, without the progression between the two. 1 feels so sterile in comparison, from the menu music to the more domestic cars to the plain UI. But Paradise is the point where they had long found their identity with rock and a gritty aesthetic, and were experimenting with an open world. And to this day, it's still one of the best open world games. You can see its influences in games like Forza Horizon or the more modern NFS games. However unlike those games, I can probably navigate Paradise City blindfolded. It's rewarding to learn the map, learn the shortcuts and nooks and crannies. Though, I have to admit, it's build more with multiplayer in mind

@NoMooreMercyTV Actually, yes, I have. I got a Steam Deck this year so I thought it was a good excuse to try out 3 and Revenge. Although 2 is important in its own way, I thought it was better to go straight to the fan favourites. I kinda hold a similar opinion to you, then. 3 is great, but Revenge is peak Burnout, even on the PS2. Only issue is the crash mode. I prefer the simplicity of 3. Revenge has too many bells and whistles for my liking, between the start mechanic, the crashbreaker that requires you to mash R2, which on modern controllers is a trigger instead of a button, and that unskippable cutscene when you restart that takes you back to the start. I prefer 3's simplicity in that regard. Playing those games made me realise was how much of a self-referential send-off Paradise was. I already knew some of the music was from 1, 2 and Dominator, as well as some of the mid to late game cars being from throughout the series. But even the streets feel like they're taken from US tracks and shortcuts in the older games, 3 and Revenge especially. Makes me wonder if there was ever plans for a sequel that added in cities based on the European and Asian tracks from those older games.

This was a great, comprehensive look at one of my favorite racing series. Shame what happened to Criterion, but if you're looking for something to scratch that Burnout itch, members of Criterion formed Three Fields Entertainment and released a bunch of spiritual successors to Burnout. Danger Zone 1 and 2 were basically Crash Mode, while Dangerous Driving was traditional Burnout, and it's followup, the upcoming Wreckreation (formerly called Dangerous Driving 2) is a spiritual successor to Burnout Paradise. (One note tho...you kept referring to the portable versions of Burnout as "mobile" versions...mobile means playable on a cell phone, aka a mobile phone. A PSP or DS isn't a mobile device, but a portable, or handheld, system. Crash is the only game that was a mobile game. Beyond that tiny nitpick, this is an excellent video.)

I used to play that game a lot on my Dad's phone and even though its a simple top-view racing game with only 3 cars, it was so fun to play back then and the takedowns were so satisfying to pull. IMO though you hit the nail on the head with how Revenge was the best, although seeing you play 360 version with the over the top visuals felt like whiplash since I played the PS2 version my whole life and I think the visuals are far superior and clearer to see lol. We both got way too good at each map, and White Mountain 1 on 1, both using the Nixon Special with no bots was the most tense race imaginable as we were flat out neck and neck the entire time. Loved that game so much I once downloaded a .iso of it off Limewire to run on my chipped Xbox, only to learn after about a year of slowly downloading the game and finally burning it to a dvd that it was in Spanish. Didn't know a word but still completed the game.

Burnout 3 was the first game I had along with Tekken 5 on my PS2. Those are some of my best memories from 20 years ago :')

Burnout paradise is 100% my favorite. But burnout revenge is still probably the most unique. But paradise plays insanely good on the remastered ps4 version as well
