Oh, I am overjoyed!!! I can't wait!! I have a number of recordings I could suggest for reference. Two good ones are here: search on KZbin under "Les baccanales" and "Michael Praetorius (1571-1621) Ballet des Baccanales". For one with only crumhorns, "Michael Praetorius - Dances from Terpsichore" (begins at 3:58, and is connected to several other dances). Anyway, whatever you do with it will be better than anything else. :-) Once again, THANK YOU for even considering! Warm regards, Joel Rian

Okay, this is something I know about. Crumhorn’s are NOT kazoos, they are reed-cap instruments. There is a double reed, like an oboe or a bassoon inside the cap they are blowing in. That is nothing like the kazoo, which is sung or hummed into and has a membrane inside that vibrates. Kazoo’s were known as mirliton’s at that time (see Tchaikovsky’s “Dance of the Mirlitons” from The Nutcracker, often mistranslated as “Dance of the Reed Flutes”) and in the renaissance the closest thing was a Eunuch flute, it looked like an instrument but inside the cap was spider web which would buzz when the instrument were sung into. They were used to equalize voices and to instrumentalize the voice when performing consort music.

Note the instrumentalists in the title painting, with their right hands on the top and the left hands at the bottom, the opposite of what we do today. People did play instruments either-handed in the 16th century (evident from the bottom-note keys that extend to both sides), but I suspect that since _everyone_ in the painting is playing right-hand-up, it may be a mirror image. At Renaissance Faires (a quaint California custom), customers sometimes suppose that the instrument is indeed just me humming to produce a sound like a kazoo. If they say so, I quickly switch from tenor to soprano and speak to them so they know that this is not my vocal range (and will sometimes pull the wind cap off to show them how it works, if they seem interested). Sadly, few Faire customers-or performers for that matter-are much interested in actual history nowadays.
