Not only she has to train an perfect the art of being a maiko soon to be geiko. She plays the piano (I asume she practice piano as well) including all the other dances and tea ceremony etiquette. Wow. Brava.

I can't help thinking this might be the very beginning of a renaissance for geiko/maiko. While still being superb artists and performers, the time when the shamisen was known, understood and appreciated by enough to support the geiko has passed and it may well be that the geiko have to adapt to new times, learning new forms of art, playing new (in this context) instruments. I have recently become very fascinated by the geiko culture and although I appreciate the skills they have playing the shamisen, the sound is simply too "foreign" to my ears and I am not sure I could sit and listen to it for very long. Not that I am in a position to hire geiko for entertaining my guests but perhaps they could gain more patrons/customers, if their repertoires included at least some more modern forms of music - not neccessarily the latest chart hits but something that might suit a small group of people being entertained in private. It is very difficult to say what will be 'appropriate' because on the one hand we are witnessing a centuries old culture with deep-seated traditions and customs but on the other hand, that very culture has to earn the means neccessary to survive as a culture.
