I played the WORST rated D&D Game on Steam | Daggerdale Review

Daggerdale is an RPG based on 4th edition DnD that fails on every conceivable metric: gameplay, graphics and even music.
Dungeons and Dragons video games have always been a mixed bag. While there are classics like Baldur's Gate and Neverwinter Nights, there are also games like, well Daggerdale, by Bedlam Games.
This 2011 game is the lowest rated DnD game on Metacritic, so I dove in to understand why. I played Daggerdale on PC, your mileage may vary if you have an ancient X-box 360 or PS 3 copy.

This is one of those pieces of media that I call cursed--not in the usual meme sense of somewhat unsettling, but rather in the sense that the only way their existence and level of quality can only be explained if we assume that the developers crossed a spiteful wizard and were cursed for a thousand years.

Came to say this too. Daggerdale is cheap and forgettable and I never bothered doing a second playthrough with a different character, but I personally don't recall minding it too much until the final battle; I was okay with it enough to play it to the end. With Descent to Undermountain, I couldn't stomach dealing with it anymore past an hour or so and never returned. It's legit terrible, outside of its using what would later be the tavern music in Baldur's Gate. That's the one good thing I can recall about it.

Honestly, I don't blame the dev team for this. I think that, given how fast they closed after release, they probably did the best with the situation they were stuck in. For sure it's a bad game, but if the dev team had time to patch it, and the budget I assume, I think it would be a lot better.

If you played this game 20+ years ago it would be a little dull, but perhaps not the worst game you'd play that year. 20 years ago (around a decade before the game was actually released) it might not even seem that bad. Heroes of the Lance? That shit is straight up not playable. It is barely a game. This is not hyperbole. If you think this is bad, you have no idea. My experience is with the NES version (which is very easy to get running on an emulator. I actually did have the cartridge as a kid, though.) The PC version is, from what I understand, only marginally better.

@@WilliamSRD A large part of the problem with videogames in the 4e era of D&D (i would say 2008-2012/2013) was that the license for games was held by Atari (guess who published this game here) and they didn't really do anything with it, publishing stuff most likely just to prove they're maintaining the license. in 2009 Hasbro sued Atari to get the license back (Atari was also sublicencing it to Bandai Namco at the time I believe which was a contractual no-no if memory serves... it's been a few years) and only in late 2011 did they get it back. unsurprisingly, this game came out mid 2011, likely when the writing was on the wall that the license was going away.

@Mustang McKraken except NVN is very much pre 4e. Even NVN 2 was built off the 3.5 rules if memory serves and was released 2005 or 2006, a couple of years before D&D 4e came out. I had some fun with 4th. The campaign booklets were some of my favorites. Honestly, I think the only reason 4e failed was because it followed 3.5. There was SO much complexity in 3.5 (with basically every book adding new rules/spells/classes), and it really did have to get trimmed down to bring in newer players looking for an easy system to play. If 5e had followed 3.5, I think it would have been just as reviled as 4e.

It seemed like a small group worked on this. I gave it a chance, enjoyed it a bit but then was disappointed with alot of its problems. It just wasn't as deep as it should've been. Limited spells and the point system was too short. After this I tried Dungeons n Dragons Heroes on Xbox Original which was a bit more enjoyable. Then I tried Lord of the Rings War in the North. Great game, really fun. But on xbox it has a corrupt save issue that occured after you beat the game once or twice (trying to go back for missing loot). And you would lose your save file and start all over. Fun game but that ruined it for me. Not sure if the Steam version has this issue though.

What’s so bad about Rezlus? He’s powerful, he’s loyal - to the lord of darkness, and we all need darkness, so we can sleep and have low light for romantic candle-lit dinners… not at the same time… well I guess you could… maybe that’s your thing. Nevertheless, I’m still yet to hear what’s so bad about Rezlus. He doesn’t sound so bad. I’m assuming Rezlus is a he. Ah! Maybe that woman in the opening cut scene is an ex of Rezlus and has a grudge against him… maybe THAT explains why she wants the murder hobos to defeat Rezlus (who’s not such a bad guy, going by the info we’ve been given). Oh, Rezlus has constructed an army to conquer Daggerdale, she says… so you must kill them? Hypocritical murder hobos!

There is local co-op in the game, meaning you can play it with someone else on the same machine... Then there is "Steam Remote Play" which allows your friends to join your local game that you would stream to them.

As someone who's into the world and lore of D&D, but not so much the turn based, dice throwing mechanics that its video games tend to throw in there (which makes sense of course) seeing a game based on D&D like this flop sucks. The only D&D games I know of are Baldurs Gate and Divinity Original Sin 2, and both have gameplay that doesn't appeal to me.

Yeah, I'm a guy who has quite a robust library of table-top RPG books, not just D&D but I've never actually played a tabletop game. I'm really into the world and lore more than the gameplay. Most of these books are a genuinely compelling read.

@@etinarcadiaego7424 I wouldn't mind having a go of the table top game, but when it comes to video games I want an action based combat system game for D&D. I get why a lot of the games make it turn based, but I'd love a third and/or first person action game akin to The Witcher or Skyrim because I'd love to actually feel like I'm playing a character in the world, not having a gods eye view of what feels like fancy chess.

The TSR branded D&D games from the 90s and early 2000s were frequently awful with terrible interfaces, game play, and story lines. I can remember returning at least 3 of them for being terrible.

Honestly, 4th Edition should have been a Renaissance for D&D video game development. More than any other edition, its rules set and approach to turn based combat could have been translated 1:1 into any number of single player and multiplayer video games.

I'm quite surprised by the lack of great DnD video games as a whole. The whole series lends itself to it so well. Still also puzzled why there are very few Game of Thrones video games but that might have to do with that IP not being sold much apart from HBO.

D&D isn't a "series" ya know, it's a _system_ with like roughly bajillion and half settings. Also over four decades old so both the mechanics and the assorted lores have been overhauled (or in the latter case blatantly and usually arbitrarily retconned) many times over - it's on its freaking 5th edition now. (4th ed was particularly, uh, 'launched to mixed receptions' because lmfao tabletop WoW p much)

Are you sure there is no co-op left? Far as I can tell with a bit of searching, this game should have 2 player offline play on PC. If you really want to stretch it, you can play online with remote play together as well... And parsec, if that's still around. If you feel like confirming it, might help boost the game beyond "glorified paperweight", even if not by much.

The game was a product of a failing dev team it shows. Just like Turok Evolution before it, they rushed it, I KNOW it was supposed to be longer or have multiple parts to it. I personally enjoyed it for what it was, but I definitely have played better D&D games, and worse.

The PC port of Heroes of the Lance isn’t a fan made port. It’s a legit commercial port… and one of the better versions. The DOS, Atari ST, & the Amiga version are basically the best versions. If you’re gonna play it I recommend playing one of those. Avoid the others, ESP the NES version… it’s the shittiest most broken version of the bunch… even worse than Tiertex’s port on the Master System.

A good multiplayer game would balance the gameplay so it’s fun alone with any class and even more fun with friends and all four classes working together. It wouldn’t do what this game does and just, assume you’re going to rope three friends to play it with you (not that that’s even possible anymore) by giving the enemies huge health bars that don’t scale to the number of players and making it so that each class needs the other three in order to function is just bad game design that can be fixed by giving the other classes skills that allow them to survive on their own. Maybe make the wizard able to put down a double as a distraction or have the rogue go invisible or have the fighter have a dodge roll in addition to the guard, they’re not really DnD stuff but it would have made the game more, able to play xD So I agree with you it’s not forgivable game design, you shouldn’t design your multiplayer just assuming all your classes will be in play at any time (it’s not a DnD game so it’s not a fair comparison but Deep Rock Galactic does a great job of making all the classes fun and viable to play alone but way more fun with all four working together, if you’re designing a game that has four class multiplayer I would look at that game and see the experimentation they went through to arrive what makes it work so well)
