Hi Denis. 64 year old man here. I started playing guitar again 3 or so years ago after a 30 year break. I accept that I may not reach the level of my favorite guitarists such as Carl Kress, Johnny Smith, Tony Mottola, and others. However, I practice hours a day in order to be able to play the tunes I am working on to as perfectly as they can be performed at my current technical level. My tunes may not be virtuosic, but the music is, even it is simplicity, always honest and sincere. I bought your fretboard visualization book when it came out. Thanks for writing it, it has changed they way I listen and play.

@@jfar3340 I play chord-melody but do my best to improvise single line licks when I can. I mostly steal the licks from the best and throw it in when I can hear that it fits. I am getting better ears and at audiation from doing lots of transcribing. It is fun when I know if figured something new out!

Now you can use the 43 min saved towards your own 12 hour practice routine. - From the transcript provided, Dennis CH reflects on his recent experience of practicing 12 hours a day, emphasizing the difference between his current, more efficient practice methods compared to when he was younger. Here are the key points regarding whether it was worth it to practice 12 hours a day: Efficiency in Practice: Dennis highlights that he now practices more efficiently than when he was younger, suggesting that even with reduced hours, one can achieve significant progress if the practice is structured and focused. Health and Well-being: He mentions feeling sick during the recording, which could imply that the intensity of his practice might have contributed to his health issues or at least did not prevent them. Personal Satisfaction and Skill Improvement: Dennis notes substantial skill improvements in Flamenco guitar within a short period, which he attributes to his new practice methods. He also mentions enjoying the process, indicating personal satisfaction from the practice. Time and Life Balance: He acknowledges the challenge of dedicating extensive time to practice when life responsibilities increase with age. This practice regimen was exceptional for him, not typical due to other life demands like making content or earning a living. Long-term Commitment: Dennis reflects on whether he wants to continue this level of commitment to Flamenco, suggesting that such intense practice might not be sustainable or desirable for all aspects of his musical career or life. Was it worth it practicing 12 hours a day? For Skill Improvement: Yes, he managed to acquire new skills and knowledge, suggesting that for this particular period, the intensive practice was beneficial for his musical development. For Health and Life Balance: Potentially no, considering his health state and the acknowledgment that this level of practice is not sustainable long-term, especially considering other life responsibilities. For Personal Fulfillment: Yes, Dennis seems to derive joy and satisfaction from the process, indicating it was worth it in terms of personal enjoyment and achievement. In summary, while Dennis achieved significant musical progress, the worth of practicing 12 hours a day appears contingent on the balance between skill acquisition, personal health, and life's broader demands. He views the practice as valuable but recognizes its limitations and costs.

It's a Romanes song called "O Devel". You can find Tcha Limberger performing it on a video in the DC music school channel, very much reccomended!

Denis, thanks for these videos and your wonderful books. What do you recommend in terms of how to practice and develop muscle memory for people who love many different styles, who have the capacity to practice for hours a day but don’t have the specialist mindset to stick to one style for more than a couple of months at a time?

I read somewhere that in Spain kids are trained in rasgueado from an early age starting with unwinding the fingers on a tabletop. Don't know if that's true but it helped me a little.

At 43:00: you mention that you see significant results after 6 months with a proper practice regimen, and then give examples of TECHNICAL results. I agree that it is reliable to notice improvements in technique when practiced properly. Now what about improv? Can you reliably see improvement in your jazz/swing/bebop/gypsy/fusion/name it lines every 6 months, reliably? I don't think so. Prove me wrong. Cheers and merry Christmas

Dennis, if you're an advanced guitar player but aren't able to practice for a long stretch of time, do you think you lose your ability/skills? Could be worth doing a video on
