Depends on what type of music you like to play

Idk about you guys but I love piano so much that I play everyday more than 1 hour a day. I don't even think about it. It's my safe zone. I don't do exercises. I just pick up a jazz standard to enjoy something "easy" while warming up, then I move to something else and I forget that time exists.

I am a beginner I been playing for about 2 months (for real never played anything before, although I believe that my really good typing skills in computer gave me lot of finger independence). And I thought I would rellay a lot on sheet music but it got boring really fast and now I am mainly focusing on chords and improvsing in C major scale. It's fantastic, it's so fun and I am being really consistent. I usually see some piano videos and try to reproduce the techniques myself. I am always using the same 5 or 6 chord progressions but I change the rhythm or the melodies I play with them. I really started loving now playing an octave with my left and the 3rd and 5th with the right while using the pedal and the improvising some melody on top of that. Sometimes I don't use the pedal and instead I hold the 8 octave root and the melody in the other hand.

In this video, I did notice the tempo changed. I also noticed his hands do too much rolling. The final thing I noticed is wrist placement as well. Please keep in mind I play proficiently 3 instruments and play a total of 7. My major instrument is the guitar. Richard Bernstein, was my piano instructor and advisor while learning piano. 1. For wrist placement he had me practice with coins on my hands while practicing scales, arpeggios, and variations of cross overs. 2. Practice different levels of dynamics with coins on my hands. 3. Use the natural curls if my fingers to play the notes instead of hammering the notes using my arm weight. 4. This last part was to make sure to stay relaxed from the knees to the top of my head. He stated to me if you feel any tension in any part in those areas - stop, shake it out, go back to relaxed state and play on.

You know... I wonder how much of development is slowed down by learning music theory, keys, scales, modes, and chords whereas someone else might just be learning specific song pieces and not learning much music theory. Maybe that's why they seem to learn fast? I'm prefer learning every detail of music theory as well as proper technique. I think it's slowed my progress down, but maybe I might become more well rounded? Either that or they're just better than us.

@@potato9832 i dont know about you but. I have learned musical theory BY EAR and listening to music. I dont know about that but, I have only learnt one piece of music, FULLY, and it has helped me a lot. Because before that, I only had very few techniques, and that piece of music had a lot of them That's just in my case
@DRT813Ай бұрын
@@potato9832I think that can be a big factor! But people also have different speeds. For example even though I only got my piano 4 days ago (as an older adult learner, who can't play any other instruments) I already know that this will be a much slower, rougher journey for me than for many others. Over the years I just couldn't help but notice how other people often have a much better sense for rhythm or tonality. Or even - outside of music - things like coordination. I can't change that, I can only choose to either still try and accept that I'm much slower and a worse player than most others or not try playing the piano. For now I hope the first thing is an option.

Great video Matt! Always gain so much from your tutorials! I saw George Winston in concert a long while ago! He certainly has his own style and plays Vince Guaraldi impeccably!
@johnjohannes59545 ай бұрын
nice presentation ! I have also noticed some things that need to be improved. 1. There is no legato. Everything that he plays he lifts his hand before going to the next position. 2. There is no wrist flexibity which reduces the speed and can cause damage on the hand. 3. There is no dynamic escalation neither on the parts of the piece nor within the same piece. Piano is not always to play the correct notes. One needs to study every piece in structure to get a feeling of how it should be played always following the marks of the publisher

It will help a lot as you said that for long pieces, understanding the chord sequences, patterns, phrases, and scales help in grasping the piece much faster than learning by individual notes. But since I am a beginner, I am having difficulty in identifying and analysing such parts in a piece. Currently I am preparing for Trinity piano grade 2 and developing such a habit will help me later.
@matticawood5 ай бұрын
Definitely! If you can look at your grade 2 pieces and see which chords are being used, that will help you a lot as you learn harder pieces 😊

I’ve been practicing piano and taking piano lessons online since September 2022. I practice on average 3-4 times a week roughly. I tried practicing piano every day at one stage but it’s mentally tiring for me at times. So I like to practice a few times a week so it gives me time to rest my brain and my fingers too so I don’t burn out or pull any muscles. When you have a break from the piano for a day your brain processes the information better so when you go back to it a day later you feel fresher and not so burned out. Rest is key to improvement.
@matticawood5 ай бұрын
3-4 times a week is good! Breaks are important, but I would suggest practicing for less time in each session if you are feeling like you you brain and fingers are getting tired. (If your fingers are tired that might be a sign of tension). For those people that find it hard to sit down and practice regularly, I always suggest practicing for just 10 minutes…because it’s a small commitment. 10 minutes each day shouldn’t cause mental fatigue and then you build up the stamina from there. What happens in those 10 minutes is less important until the habit is built up 😊

It's George Winston. Windham Hill had an incredible Yamaha C7 w/ pair Neumann U67 mics and an incredible signal chain that gave the instrument itself an incredible sound. The artist took advantage of this and it's not totally fair to judge the piece on the composition alone. 12:21 I disagree, it's solo piano not an orchestra, the G's anchor the phrase. It sounds great and much better than w/o, you're just used to other versions of Canon burnt into your mind. The artist does this type of rhythm harmony a lot on the Windham Hill recordings on that particular piano setup. He did not read sheet music and had someone else transcribe all his stuff. If you listen very carefully to his recordings you can hear edits in many pieces where they spliced together multiple takes so they don't always flow perfectly. Lastly, if familiar w/ the original recording Ryoya has the original in his head, he can't help but play it very much the same and with same tempo as the studio recording (missing some dynamics though...)

I don't know your situation at all, but I don't have a lot of money either so I decided I was going to get something pretty cheap. I got a Casio keyboard for around 350 dollars new. You can get a lot cheaper than that. I know it's not a digital piano with 88 weighted keys but it's better than not having anything to practice on. Consider that if you would like to learn at some point you better start sooner rather than later otherwise you are just wasting time.

@@laureanooliva7836 I concur with this comment. I myself picked up a CT-S1 for a 100 odd dollars off a classified site, and it has helped me get started. My teacher doesn't seem to mind it either since it still has velocity sensitivity. Just pick up whatever you can find for the sort of music you'd like to learn (I myself leaned for this model since I wished to train classically, but get a more arranger focused board if you are leaning for that) and just get started ASAP.

It’s really about building the habit of going to the piano…so try 5-10 minutes per day for 90 days (that’s a challenge 😉). It doesn’t matter too much what you do in that time until you’ve built the habit of going to the piano.
