And you aren't even going to show how you replaced the fuel pump? You could have made the video useful.

Installing a mechanical fuel pump on most American V8's is a simple task. Disconnect the fuel hoses, or unbolt the lines (Best to buy a fuel filter if you don't know if it's been replaced, OEM replacement, nothing fancy), remove the bolts holding it on, remove the pump. They're annoying to replace, but not hard. If the lines don't want to budge, put a wrench on one, preferably a line wrench if you have one, and veeery gently tap it with a hammer or something heavy enough. Once the line starts to move wiggle it back and forth repeatedly while applying penetrating oil. I'd reccomend watching a specicifc how to on your vehicle. Chevy 350's have a damned rod in there that you have to hold up (Without getting your finger stuck in the engine, been there, done that), and put the fuel pump lever under. Dodge 318's and 360's simply require you to stuff the fuel pump back into the engine. There will be resistance, that's normal, cuss at it until it goes in far enough to get the bolts started. Use some thread sealer on the bolts and make sure to replace your fuel pump gasket. The bolts often thread into the crank case or, on some engines like Ford 302's, the timing cover. Hope that helps, I didn't have a tripod at the time and I was in a rush to get it done.

@@DeadReckon thanks for the video and the follow up answer to his comment, quick question (I have an '85 I'm replacing the fuel pump on) do I need to drain the oil before removing the fuel pump from the engine block? Thanks.
@DeadReckon
@DeadReckon 5 жыл бұрын
@@thecharleylee Nope, no need, if you have that much oil in your engine you have a bigger problem. If it seems like the fuel pump doesn't want to go in, that's normal. Make sure you clean the gasket area and use a replacement gasket, not RTV when replacing the fuel pump. I recommend a blue felpro gasket, not the cheap ones fuel pumps come with. Airtex makes good fuel pumps, anything is better than the generic parts store brands. On Chrysler small blocks the fuel pump is simply shoved in and bolted down, it'll take a few cranks to get fuel up.

Front passengers side of the engine, just in front of the engine mount, way down low. Two bolts, and three or so hoses and it's off.

They don't make a clear one to work with the factory fuel setup. The factory fuel setup has three legs on the filter, one is a vent, or return, or something... I really dunno... These trucks have strange fuel systems, there is also a fuel bowl vent off the carb which is supposed to go to a charcoal canister... Which I don't have...

I’m trying to do something like this to an ‘88. Converted from the original TBI to an Edelbrock 4 barrel. Pressure regulator crapped out and I need to do a whole conversion. How much pressure does that pump put out?
@DeadReckon
@DeadReckon 3 жыл бұрын
The carbureted pumps put out about 7PSI, I don't really know all the details but a carbureted 2 or 4 barrel intake should fit, dunno if the fuel pump rod is in there or not on a TBI engine, I'd imagine not. You will need a different fuel tank from a carbureted truck, they make them new, and it should be a bolt on replacement.
@jordantomblin2302
@jordantomblin2302 3 жыл бұрын
@@DeadReckon There’s drop in fuel pumps but as for what would work? I don’t know. Edelbrocks need about 6psi, and I’ve found one that will put out 5.7, but no reviews and just says it’ll work in older 70s Chrysler sedans… I’ll buy another regulator but if it craps out again, I’m going a full mechanical conversion.

@@jordantomblin2302 I've run stock GM, Dodge, and Ford fuel pumps with Edelbrock, and Holley carbs, no issues. Dodge Guys!! I have an 83 D150. Put a new .318 in it. Long block. But it's leaking oil and cannot tell from where. Its not the seals..theyve been replaced twice now. Itll do fine for a few days..then oil seeps out from seemingly nowhere..and pools up on top of water pump. Im frustrated!!!
@DeadReckon
@DeadReckon 5 жыл бұрын
If it's settling on top of the water pump, it's coming out of the front of the intake. If it's an aluminum intake, it's possibly warped, if it's an iron intake, I dunno why it would keep leaking. It can be hard to get those to seal. If the engine isn't venting pressure properly, it'll seep oil after it's been run to temperature. Make sure your PCV (Positive crankcase ventilation) valve and oil breather are both functional as well.
@allenbinion1575
@allenbinion1575 5 жыл бұрын
@@DeadReckon Pretty sure the PCV is still good..I took it off and blew in it..seemed fine. But most of whats under the hood is old...and I bit off more than I can chew here. I may replace pcv and breather just to be sure. Thank you.

@DeadReckon

On the later fuel injected models, the fuel pump will be in the tank. On all carbureted models, the fuel pump is clearly visible on the side of the engine block.
@donwilson7166
@donwilson7166 4 жыл бұрын
@@DeadReckon Thanks. I replaced the fuel pump on the engine. I just can't get fuel to flow back up to it. I think if I remove the bed, since it needs a major cosmetic change, I could get to the fuel tank in order to replace hoses.
@DeadReckon
@DeadReckon 4 жыл бұрын
@@donwilson7166 Yeah, it's easier to get to them that way but you might as well drop the fuel tank while you have the bed off. If it's still having fueling issues, a line, or the tank is clogged. There are rubber lines which run to hard lines, 2 to 3 depending on the year model. The lines rot out inside and out, especially inside with ethanol. I think Rock Auto still sells new tanks for these trucks but you may have to hand bend the lines if you need them. You can blow compressed air through the lines to see if they're blocked or if crud comes out.

Do you know if I can go from electric to mechanical pump on my 92 D250?
@DeadReckon
@DeadReckon 4 жыл бұрын
By 1992, the last year of the square body Dodge trucks, they where fuel injected, so no, they need the high pressure electric fuel pump. If you go through the trouble of carburetor swapping it (and that doesn't violate emission laws in your locality) then you can use a mechanical pump, I think the later fuel injected engines just had a block off plate.
