this is an underratedd channel. Great work with your tests. Looks like you have taken a break from generating content. Your pwr consumption metrics are very useful . I hope you create more soon. I will be curious to know what's budget build if I need to run plex + few VMs/Dockers. Is it better to go with Intel i9600 alone or Amd+Nvidia GPU or Xeon.

@@NyneIX9 Went with AMD +Nvidia(p2200), expensive build in the end. It is great. But the 12th gen intel, with integrated graphics should do fine for budget builds

Apparently AMD i has been neglecting their H264 support for years, not a clue as too why. So even outside of plex it will not perform as well, as you might expect from the hardware. Kinda unfortunate seeing as that probably (almost) everyone needs good H264 performance on their media server. If you where to do tasks that only encode H265, its (supposedly) great. So i am very curious to see how it does on things like converting say 1080p H265 to H265 720p and how it stacks up then compared to Intel quick sync and such.

AMD outsources there encoder and decoder now. Maybe they don't feel paying higher royalties to the maker of the asic is worth it?

It's better than on Pascal and Vega but still nothing in comparison to Intel Quicksync and Nvidia NVENC/NVDEC 🤷 Conclusion: Buy this Card for gaming, not Plex

Really useful. Could you do more tests with 4K transcode? Ryzen 3000 series, Intel quick sync and different quaddro cards. I would love to see what could be a viable option to a couple of simultaneus transcode streams frome 4K to update my plex server, since my old intel cpu dosen't use quick sync for HEVC 265 files, only old H264, and I use it as a home server fore quite some more tasks and I can't keep up with other tasks while sofwtare transcoding 4K.
@Gastell04 жыл бұрын
ffmpeg settings affect AMD transcoding, for example buffering is the issue that should be fixable by "-gops_per_idr 1" parameter, so in general tests should be done using ffmpeg with various settings added since Plex haven't really added all necessary flags yet
@silentseawolf4 жыл бұрын
as a AMD fan, yes, get the flame thrower out. But the undeniable is that the only thing holding back this hardware is its drivers. And nobody is going to bother trying to iron out bugs and do optimization for AMD hardware until AMD software is reliable. The worst enemy of AMD is AMD.....

Plex doesn’t even list AMD gpus as compatible. Software here is not doing a favor to AMD. The 5700 encoder flies with h265 encoding on video editors but as you said it’s not a good option right now (but the potential is there)

It's hard to disagree with this assessment. Even on Windows 10, AMD transcoding is awful, and I don't trust NTFS/Windows with my data. On Linux, it's non-existent. QSV or NVENC are the only real options, much to my frustration and annoyance (I'd love nothing more than to give AMD all the money I'd otherwise give to Intel and nVidia). Things might be different on OS X with their video toolbox API, but I have no idea, who buys an AMD-equipped Mac just to run plex on? Seriously, AMD just needs to pull the finger out and make ffmpeg work well with their GPUs. Intel and nVidia put the work in and they're reaping the rewards.

I know this question has nothing to do with Plex, but how high is your CPU Load when you play back a 4K60 (VP9 Codec) Video on KZbin with the Radeon RX 5700? My RX 470 can only do 1080p60 😅

Thanks for buying the new Rx5700 do I don't have to. I love AMD,I love their CPU/APU and GPUs, but while there hardware transcode, decode andb encode are great on other platforms and apps, they suck with Plex Server. Unless AND can devote some time and money into updating FFMPEG 3.X and get Plex to them update there build of FFMPEG, no amount of tech AND adds or renames they transcode engine, it will never be sufficient for more than simple transcoding or streaming a single video game to share online. Truly sad that AMD has succeeded the hardware transcode environment to Intel and NVIDIA.

Great Video thanks for the Information. I want to build a Plex Server that will also be used to download from Newsgroups and from Torrent sites. Newsgroups will be automatically indexed and downloaded with Sonarr and Radarr and NZBget. Torrents will be downloaded by utorrent and all files that need to be converted will be done with VLC. I will be using Windows 10 or 10 pro, I have a RAID Card, 10 10TB Seagate Ironwolf Drives that will be used in RAID 6 and just bought a P5000 Q card after watching some KZbin videos from this channel and other. I will be using either an Regular ssd or a NVME SSD for the OS. The server will have 32 GB of memory. I already have a dedicated NAS so this server will not handle any other network duties. There are 6 people in the house all with at least 2 wireless devices each and eight Smart TVs that either are or will be wired to the network. I want to be able to access Plex from the road. Sorry about all the information given but I wanted to explain what I will use to build the server and how many devices will use it before I ask my question. With all that in mind, what would be the best Intel CPU to use?
@christianspencer18505 жыл бұрын
I would say the best one you can afford. I have a similar setup except with a P2000 and I have an i9-9700k for my CPU. If anything, I'd exchange the P5000 for the P2000 and then use the money you saved towards whatever CPU you want.

Kinda misleeding since Plex is known for not utilizing AMD based GPU's verry well... Not AMD's fault in my opinion but Plex engineers not implementing AMD AMF/VCE to the same degree as Nvidias encoder
@SlothTechTV5 жыл бұрын
So let me clarify as I'm not sure I fully understand your comment. You are saying my video is misleading because I don't point out that plex engineers do not optimize plex for amd amf/vce? Well, my rebuttal to your comment is this -- on two separate occasions in the video, I explain that the version of FFMPEG Plex uses is older and is not optimized for AMD's encode/decode engines. Since you did not watch the entire video before commenting let me link you to the actual time in the video that I make this point not once, but twice: 1:31 & 4:21. Secondly, it is not Plex themselves who have optimized their platform for Nvidia/Intel it is specifically the FFmpeg libraries that are optimized, moreover, it is Intel and Nvidia who have likely spent millions of dollars working with developers to optimize software for their CPUs and GPUs. You can't fault the developer for not having the same resources to optimize their platform if AMD doesn't bother to invest but Intel and Nvidia do.
@MrJFreiman5 жыл бұрын
You need to point the finger at AMD. a they are the ones who need to support there products with vendors, etc. It's not up to Plex (who's know to do as little as possible) to create or update FFMPEG, it's up to AMD - totally 100% AMDs responsibility.
@mpetrovi5 жыл бұрын
@@MrJFreiman as far as I understand AMD's hardware encoding is supported via VAAPI an open source MIT license style API an it is still experimental... If Plex is using ffmpeg then the "person" to blame is either plex or ffmpeg developer(s)... for not supporting AMD native...
@SlothTechTV5 жыл бұрын
@@mpetrovi I really did hope the card would perform going into this test, but to say the video or my conclusions were misleading is ridiculous, the conclusions I drew were objectively true. I like AMD and love the fact that the competition is going to result in better prices for us consumers. But the bottom line is the GPUs don't make sense for Plex. I didn't even get into the quality issues -- there is a great video by EposVox where he goes into the quality differences between AMF/VCE and NVENC when encoding with these new 5700 GPUs. The summary here is that the quality is terrible by comparison to quicksync and NVENC. I am hoping they work through these issues because ultimately we need more than 2 choices for hardware acceleration. Link to EposVox Video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/eX3UoYl_orGDfac
