I've had a colony of componatus nicobarensis ants for a month now and it's pretty funny to see that they prefer to walk on the glass rather than on the cork in their nest.

I left it in the H2O2 too long, I forgot about it for over an hour...

@@Microbehunter ok, H2O2 at pH 7 roomtemperature. But in what concentration. Btw, i like the transparecy. Try it with Sodiumperoxodisulfat at higher pH

female worker ants will have the most muscular mandibles. Their whole heads are full of muscle.

What are you thoughts on vintage ernst leitz wetzlar microscopes. Are these any good for amateurs?
@Microbehunter2 ай бұрын
This all depends on several different factors, and what you want to do with them. The issue is different if you are eg. a collector or if you want to do observation. Generally I do not recommend microscopes that are so vintage that they have a horse-shoe base or made of brass. These should go into a museum. So if you are into collecting old microscopes and if you define your hobby this way, then yes. Used microscopes from the eg 1980s is a different issue. If you want to do observation you can do that for much cheaper. I think that vintage microscopes are also too "valuable" for regular observation.

It was destined for the dumpster so I’m not sure it’s that valuable. I’m a backyard gardener who makes compost, I’m interested in observing any microorganisms in my compost. I’ve played around with it a bit but I can’t seem to get it to focus. It has a light tube that slides into the back which is powered by a very old power source. The bulb only glows it’s not bright at all. I’m guessing it should be a bright light.

You said you “bleached” the ant…. Did you use straight household bleach, or something else?
@Microbehunter2 ай бұрын
I used Hydrogen Peroxide. If you want to see the whole procedure, here is the link to the video: kzbin.infopGXAW57ywFs

Could you talk about the bleaching process - would normal household bleach work?

The whole process is shown by Oliver in last satuday's LIVESTREAM (12 oktober 2024) and No household Bleach is not used

So the ants are so strong because they have muscles. Hmm, this doesn't sound like a good answer to the question. Humans have muscles too, and we can't carry 10 times our weight. So the answer must be something else.
@Microbehunter2 ай бұрын
Correct. Point made. Follow-up video will come. Short answer is that the strength of a muscle depends on the area of its cross-section and not volume. A muscle with 2x the diameter will be overall 8x heavier (Or a muscle with 2x its cross sectional area will be 4x heavier). In other words, smaller muscles are stronger compared to their volume, and thus mass (even though they are weaker in absolute numbers).
