I Put Backhoe Tires on my Tractor and Drove it to the Tire Store, Dumb Move?

My tractor needed new tires so I went to the local tire dealer to see what they had. They had an off-brand 4 ply tractor tire for $525@, or a name brand (Firestone) 8 ply for $800. I didn't like either of those two choices. My salesman saw that neither of his proposals was getting me excited when he came up with another idea...a backhoe tire with 12 ply for $625 each. That's what I went with.
The tractor in question is a Massey 362 2wd that was my dad's. He owned and operated an apple orchard and when he past away in 2007, I inherited the tractor. I really like it because it sits low to the ground and is stable on hills. I can pull an 8' bush hog with it. If it was hydrostatic drive I'd sell my other tractor and use it all the time. Hydro's have spoiled me.
This summer, the rear tire on the left side, started losing air. It was badly weather cracked, and I knew my days of patching it and getting by were numbered. When it quit holding air I decided it was time for a change. The problem was, I have no way to haul it. In order to get it to the tire store, I'd have to pay someone to come get it and take it there and then pay them again to bring it back, or...
The local tire store is 2.1 miles away, so I could drive it up there. Half of that distance is a county road, but the rest is past a Super WalMart, Lowe's, Arby's, Wendy's, etc., a heavily travelled area. I headed out on a Sunday morning, hoping to avoid a lot of traffic, but we're at the time of year in the Ozarks when tourism is in full swing. Leaves are turning and a lot of people are in the area to see the fall colors. There was more traffic than I had hoped there would be.
I fueled up the tractor, mounted a beacon on the roll bar (available here: asktractormike...) and headed to town. I took my time and let traffic go around me, and about 20 minutes or so later, I was pulling into the parking lot at Economy Tire. The following week, they drained the fluid out of the old tires and took them off, then put the new tires on and pumped the fluid back in. I paid them on Thursday of last week, then picked up the tractor early this past Sunday morning. Everything went perfectly.
Questions for you...was I dumb to put backhoe tires on my tractor and should I have "roaded" it to the tire store? I'm sure I'll get some opinions, please put in the comments below.
In the end, I'm very happy with my new tires and am considering getting a 12' batwing cutter to go on the back of the tractor now that I'm not afraid to use it. It's really the perfect tractor for hills, I just wish it was hydrostatic drive.

The tires look good. Didn’t know there was a “backhoe” R4 tread. It is different than traditional R4 tread. Looks like it has a little more of an AG influence in the tread. I think it was a wise choice considering your tractor is used as a utility tractor. Would like to hear your assessment of them as you tackle different projects, including snow performance this winter. Good reminder of the SMV usage!

Although you forgot the triangle, all of your lights were flashing. Also, you had an additional high mounted flashing light to help alert traffic of your presence. As for your decision, I can't think of any downside to having all that extra strength in those additional plies. In my humble opinion you made the best possible decision. Those tires should last til your grandkids inherent that workhorse tractor.

Hi Mike, The SMV sign should be on all the time. I always have mine in place as i never know when I might be on the road. When the tractor is on a trailer, it shouldn't matter if it is still on the tractor unless it will blow off. Lots of tractors and implements have SMV signs that are actually decals instead of a removable sign. Unless you are tilling with your tractor where you need a deep lug tire, the tires that you chose are the same as I would have chosen. I think you made the wise choice.

Great job and savings. Looks good. I have a smilar issue with a trailer. I noticed on my tilt trailer which I may use 2 to 3 times a year that the tires are dry rotted and big cracks. Just to add Mike it is also illegal to take those signs and use them on post or put them on a stake next to your driveway entrance as a reflector. Best thing is to check in your state's DMV local office.

Haven't been to the Royal Winter Fair since my FIL passed 20 yrs ago. He used to show Simmental cattle there. But I need some grease tubes anyway for the Lube Shuttle I bought from you 2 yrs ago. There's an excuse to drive the hour to revisit the Royal & say Hi. Hopefully Lube Shuttle is going to set up a Canadian distributor of their products (maybe they already have- we talked about that when I ordered mine); maybe I'll see you next week.

In our ag community we frequently have tractors and various types of farm/construction equipment on the roads. Most display the SMV sign and some don't. I spoke with our local county sheriff about SMV signs a couple of years ago. He chuckled about it and replied "Well, we live in a farm community. And if a person is driving down one of our local roads and sees a great big green, red, orange or blue thing in the road and he can't figure out that it's farm equipment and its going to be moving slow then the little orange triangle is the least of our worries." There's that common sense thing again. Wish there was more of that in our governments.

i've used both ag and R4, i like the R4, little smoother ride on harder ground for my needs and most tractors now have at least locking rear diff to make up a little for not having ag tires and traction when needed.

For what you are using the tractor for, I believe you made the right choice. I noticed the missing SMV sign as soon as you backed out of the garage. Interesting story, years ago I sold a piece of farm equipment that I agreed to deliver about 10 miles away. This was a large piece of equipment that I hooked up to my 150 hp John Deere tractor. I made the delivery with no problems and headed back home. On the way home, the State Patrol and the County Sheriff had set up a "safety check" where all vehicles were stopped. Drivers had to show drivers license, registration, insurance card. Headlights, tail lights, brake lights, and turn signals were also checked. I pulled up in my John Deere, expecting to get waved on through, but NO. I was checked along with the other motorists, except the only thing that they checked was for the SMV sign. My SMV was on correctly and I was allowed to proceed. If I didn't have the SMV, I would have received a ticket.

Mike I think you made a good choice on tires. I would have done the same thing. As far as how far you went with the tractor. I just drove a 8520( I think that's the number of it) JD with a 10' bushog about 40 miles Taking it from our plant to our Sister plant. It took me about 1 1/2 hours to make that run. I stayed mostly to back roads but like you the last 5 miles was.on a 4 lane highway. I will say I made it with no issues but I don't care to repeat it. We had borrowed this tractor the month before to cut under our powerlines and I picked it up and then brought it back. I hope we buy our own for next year's cutting.

I use r4 tires on all my tractors we do heavy tillage with. Because they are wider and can get more ballast weight in them and they seem to get as good if not better traction than the ag tires they are wider and don't seem to sink as bad in softer ground. May not work for everyone else but works fantastic for us,

Mike, I just bought two Workhorse R4 skidsteer tires for the front of my Kubota 3901. 12 ply should be great for my honey locust infested farm. Only problem I've had is mounting them on the factory rims. Couldn't get them to seat no how. Took them to a tire dealer and they didn't have a problem (monster compressor). But the next morning one was flat. Back to the dealer. I think the problem was under inflation. The tires are marked 610 kPa which I believe translates to 85 psi. The guys at the dealer said 45 psi was enough. I keep them at least 50 psi now. You better check your tires. Thanks for the story.

I've hauled my sub-compact tractor a couple times, didn't remove the SMV sign the 2nd time, and haven't even given it a thought to even look and see if its still on the tractor, that it didn't blow off on the highway LOL. As far as tires, I have R4's on my tractor, they do fine for the dirt work loader, tiller, type stuff I do. I think mine are only 4 ply but so far no issues within the past year of owning the tractor....when it comes time to replace them, I'll definitely be looking for a set of tires in the 6 ply range at a minimum, on a tractor having heavier tires really don't make much difference as you aren't driving at highway speeds and fuel economy isn't as big of an issue...not having to worry about flat tires is a bigger concern for tractors, and the more plies you got the better flat resistance you have.

I would do what you did. Two wheel drive tractor 12 ply Tire sounds good. Also if you're driving around and gravel or pavement unless aggressive tire is a great idea. You know if you've got room for a slots poles or otherwise on the rims you can put chains on it. We got to say change on old John Deere and they've only been there the same set of chains for close to 50 years! We haven't used the tractor Hardley at all in the last decade. All we did was take individual length of chains around the rubber of the Tire and then attach it to threaded rod at both ends. Where the rod goes through the rim it's a solid bar for more durability. If we were ever get hung up on something it threads would break as designed. Anyway you probably know this stuff. Maybe I'm just sharing for other folks. I recognize the intersection you drove through. Oh we don't live out that way by any means but we like to go through there for vacation occasionally. Anyway you're probably about six of those spaced out evenly around the cars. It works great moving gravel snow ice whatever it is plow through the field. I enjoyed the episode. Oh by the way I got a 1965 John trailer. It'd be great calling tractors even bigger than that behind a dump truck say two and a half tons maybe 5-ton definitely. Trade it for a decent tractor.

Hi Mike, I missed the smv sign. I have one on my tractor that I trailer almost everywhere unless a job is only a couple of miles away. When I'm not brush hogging it spends most of the summer on the trailer waiting for the next mowing job. The smv is bolted to the seat back, but since I back it on the trailer I fold the seat forward or else going down the road the wind slams it onto the steering wheel. Anyway, folding the seat puts the smv sign aiming up to the sky and sort of out of sight. I would have driven the tractor too rather than try to trailer it if there was no trailer around. I don't think in two miles the tractor goes fast enough to heat the tires to the point of them failing. I think the tires you got are perfect. That being a two wheel drive seems like you can use all the traction you can get.

I'm relatively new to the tractor game but I've been watching you for a few years now. I think your choice of tire was good, you said you don't use it super often and just need them to be around for a good long time. I'd probably do the same, comparing usefulness to cost. I did notice you didn't have the slow moving vehicle sign on the back, but then again I'm fairly new to this so that was fresh in my mind. It's a good thing to call out, though, as there are so many things to be aware of that it's easy to lose track of some of them. I'm kind of in the same situation as you in some respects being in NE oklahoma so I feel like all the rocks from the ozarks wind up at my doorstep. I've recently opened up a mine (officially, with the state) on my land to carry out the surface rock on my 20 acres so my family can have a nice place to live. We didn't originally have a mining permit, but a neighbor complained and the state said it would be better in the long run if we just got a permit. I purchased a tractor a few years ago to brush hog when we bought the land and built our forever-home, and your channel has continued to inspire me to be a weekend warrior and get this land in the condition I need it to be in for my family to enjoy. Thank you for everything you do, and now I also know that replacing the back tires are going to be at least twice the cost of replacing the front tires ;)

If the tires are proper for the rim, they should be fine. Only time and use will determine whether it was a "good" buy. If they last as long as the originals, great buy!

Mike, I did notice the missing SMV triangle when you were heading out. If I forgot it when I was on the road people/police may notice it or they may let it go (small Town and not many police). As far as the tires go, as long as the size is right, I would have gotten the BH tires too. The price was a no-brainer. Thanks for sharing

I think you made a good choice on the tires. I would have done the same thing given those options.

I just saw that tractor in the orchard video. 👍 Those tires are great for the rock and clay we have in the slowzarks. I think driving it was a reasonable risk and obviously it worked out. All set for another 30 years. Another option would have been to pull the wheels off and haul them in on a trailer. The tractor could sit in the corner of the shop on jack stands a few days until the new shoes were ready. I've hauled my tractor thousands of miles and never removed the SMV sign. Never heard of that. Is this actually the law or just something we believe is true because Uncle Buck once declared it to be so while downing a bottle of 'shine?

Driving it to the shop,2 miles,no biggie. Good choice on that, in my opinion. On a 2wd farm tractor,i would have chosen the ag tires myself but to each their own.

Being so very close to the workshop made driving the tractor an option in your case. In Australia, I would need to apply for a permit and special registration as a road vehicle and then have a 100 km each way journey, involving a a section of highway that doesn't allow tractors. In our situation, it would be easier to remove the wheels and use a light trailer or ute to carry them to and from the tyre shop.

They aren't a requirement in Australia, but I too spotted it. The strobe and the fact its a slow arsed tractor should be fair indication enough though, I think the triangle is redundant. At least you didn't get pulled over by an overly zealous Highway Patrol trouper. New tyres look like they will do the job and not having squared off ends on the chevrons they will probably wear a slower. No one likes spending $$ on rubber, but you got 26 years out of the last lot and they rotted before they wore out, so certainly got your monies worth.

Mike you remind me of me when you made that boo-boo. I would forget my backside if it wasn’t hooked to my legs and my back. Those are good looking tires!

I installed 14 ply R1 forestry tires on a 5,000 lb new holland 2 wheel drive tractor with a loader and found the reduced tire flexibility reduced traction. unless I kept the tire pressure a little lower. I am also very happy with my heavy ply tires.

It not unusual to road machinery 2hrs or more in our area and have experience with flats also. It's just accepted as a risk worth taking. Stop lights ,left turn lanes and mail boxes every 200 ft It's a thrill a minute.

My first thought was you forgot the forks to bring the "good" tire home... then noticed the triangle. What can i say I'm a cheap swamp Yankee... think you made a wise choice. I have a tiny yanmar 135D with rice paddy tires. been thinking of putting LT truck tires on for spring instead of turf tires. Whoflungpoo brand Chinese truck tires are dirt cheep, and i'm tired of rutting up the lawn during mud season.

The tires work and that is the point in getting tires. Forgetting the smv placard was bad but it worked out fine. So it did not happen.

Retreads are your best bet. More than half the tires sold are retreads. The reduced cost is because new tire carcass has a federal excise tax. There is no tax on the retread carcass.
