Thank you for sharing, I understand your mum worries, ( I am 71 years old grandfather) but at the same time people have to realize that life cannot take life for granted and we do not know how short or long our life will be. We cannot buy time, if we are not happy now we cannot go back. Live the moment, follow your innerself and then there will be not regrets on our final hours in this world. Forget about security, there it is not such thing specially when we talk about materialistic things and investments that are managed by others for their own gain. Keep safe and your dream alive.

Its amazing how most people assume they are for sure going to live until retirement, and spend most of their adult lives putting off living life to its fullest (some people dont even know how) to be able to "enjoy" life at retirement...I believe that there can be a happy medium between the two.
@plutoplatters7 жыл бұрын
the key is to enjoy life wherever you are. don't fall prey to the " marketing of retirement" that's being pushed all over... remember this marketing is their JOB they don't want to go to everyday just like everyone else !!

I loved this video. It was so interesting to hear your mother's point of view. I'm her age more or less but the difference here was that my father was an adventurer. He always had the can-do attitude, he did quite a few unconventional things. Even with him as an example most of my siblings (there are 13 of us - that on itself was an adventure) lived a conventional 9 to 5 life. Only 2 of us broke the mold. One brother worked in several countries in Africa for many years. I got involve in the skydiving scene. After a few years my husband and I quit our jobs and bought a one way ticket around the world - I don't think they have those any more -. After the trip we didn't go back to 9 to 5, we found seasonal jobs in the skydiving scene traveling north - south, following the season. Long story to tell you that the direction you are heading is the one you are suppose to take and it will take you where you are suppose to be. Take it from an older girl: follow your heart and it will all work out fine. BTW your mom's pretty cool.

Very good conversation. I left home at 19 (after getting a college education) and moved to another State. Once on a trip home for a visit my gf told me she had wished she'd had the courage that I did to move away. She married a hometown boy right out of high school. She told me she wanted to get a divorce. Her mom who is a woman full of fear herself, guilted her into not moved away. She didn't even go to college, but got an office job. She's in her 50's now at the same job in the same house. She doesn't tell her mom when she travels anywhere because her mom's so afraid for her to even leave the area to go on vacation. I look at ppl like that and feel how pathetic they are. Her son killed himself and now she's guilted her daughter into not moving away. Now her daughter has gotten an office job. She'll live the same pathetic life her mother is living. Her daughter had such potential. Now she's married to a guy she met at the company she works at, to the same kind of hometown boy her mother married, working at a local manufacturing company. What will they both do once the company shuts down and they're both of a job?

I think what your mother is saying is that she's looking at your life in a much bigger perspective- like what about when you're old and no longer can travel. What's plan B for you? As people grow old, heath issues come to light. Financial independence - how are you going to provide for yourself someday when you want to start your own family? Home - you're mother is right as well, someday, you will tire from all the travelling and when you find that sweet spot somewhere you would want to plant your roots, you need a house to stay in. She's also right, we, your audience live vicariously thru your adventures, are people who don't have the guts to leave everything behind and just travel and see the world on a budget bec some people are not financially secured yet (retirement money in the bank), tied to so many financial responsibilities, i.e., mortgages, loans, working so their kids can go to college. That's why people like you, Ben, is exceptional bec you're brave to leave that comfort zone and fears behind and do what makes you happy.
@WobbleFruit7 жыл бұрын
He'll no doubt figure it out. Not everyone needs to 'plant their roots' or have the prescribed lifestyle you talk about.

I love your series! I am in the process of leaving my professional job, selling my home in Montana and getting back on the road. I have traveled the US most of my life but did not live out of my VW. I am going to be spending a year traveling the Pacific Coastal Highway. One question or should I say concern...When you and your mom were discussing safety, you said the US was the most unsafe of all the Americas. This concerns me as I start out on my travels. Was this observation mostly in urban areas or did you find safety concerns in the rural areas as well?
@KombiLife7 жыл бұрын
There is a significant divide between middle and lower-class America. When you live in a van you are on the streets all the time, you don't get to go into a house at the end of the day. So we saw (in some areas) raving-lunatic-bums, messed up on drugs. This is what made it feel more unsafe than Latin America, as there isn't such a drug problem further south. Just my experiences and only relevant to some locations, not all.

Hi Ben, my comment is actually not meant for you this time mate. Ben´s mom (sorry I can´t remember your name) I wanted to tell you that your son has inspired thousands of people all around the world not only to travel but to follow their dreams no matter what, and honestly, that´s one of the most impressive things I ´ve ever seen, only a very small number of people on the planet have done that. Regarding the future.. we are talking about a guy who rebuilt 11 engines on the road just to keep following his dream, believe me, he will do just fine, probably a lot more than that. Thank you Ben, keep doing what you doing man, the best is yet to come.

I agree but what I found is that once you experience freedom you are only more discontent with a corporate structured world. You see the matrix for what it is. My goal is to save like crazy and quit as soon as I can. Keep living the dream for the rest of us as do it as long as you can.

I dream of traveling, not the world but just the US. It is hard to leave things behind, a good job, family and friends and just go off into the world. I am currently preparing myself to make the change of travel. I know my family and friends would follow my adventures if I post them on KZbin. I know I will slowly just be more a memory to them then the person they knew me as. Either way, I do want to travel the US every part of it and I may have someone who shares my same dream. He is more of a mountain kind of person and the vehicle would be more of an overland vehicle. You meet a lot of people on the road and you enjoy the company of special ladies for a few months or years. What if you found the one lady who wants to travel with you permanently do you think you would continue traveling or set roots with this person and start a family?

In Southern California, the homeless are entitled to up to $2,000USD per month from social services, disability and food stamps (ebt). When mental illness meets the preying of drug dealers on the homeless with lots of cash to spend, it's a bad situation. I'm sorry that you ran into that. There is a massive problem in the U.S. with meth, heroin and pharmaceudicals. My sister is a cop so I hear about it constantly. I've traveled through 50+ countries and I've experienced all sorts of stuff, like bouncers in Guatamala city holding rusty sawed-off shotguns at the door to bars and police swinging night clubs at me in India while wandering the streets after curfew. But the situation on the streets of the U.S. is definitely unique.
