I worked for Disney as a full time professional salaried cast member, a part time cast member and a professional contractor totaling 25 years. When I joined the company in 1987 the company was GREAT. The company now sucks. I don’t blame you for quitting. You have a bright future no matter what you choose to do! Best of luck! Disney is going down hill. Don’t go down with them.

My niece is there now and absolutely hates it. Basically indentured servitude. 12 hour shits in food service. This is not a college program. It’s using kids as cheap labor. Her term ends August 25 and she’s counting the days. I told her use this as a good life lesson in how corporate America treats people and what kind of manger she will be in the future.

I have traveled from New England to WDW ten times, staying on property, eating exclusively at WDW restaurants and buying their merchandise. My last visit was in 2017 and from what I hear, I probably wont be returning. The live entertainment was always an appeal to me and so much of that has not returned. Also the stories about animatronics in disrepair is disheartening. It sounds like Disney no longer cares about quality. I do still have very fond memories from past visits that will never leave me.

When I was full time at one of the hotels in 2016, an entire group of CPs that had been fully trained were recast in food and beverage roles due to need/demand. So there's no blaming the pandemic. This has happened in the past. The day everyone found out, many of the CPs were literally crying backstage.

Glad you were brave enough to walk away. I hate to say this, but I'm not surprised. We have been Disney fans for years, going almost every year. Yep! I started my dcp last June as a house person and self termed in November. I was at DAKL and they treated us like garbage. Made us work 10 hr shifts 5-6 days a week and then would “forget to add our overtime” to our checks. I injured my hip twice while working there and the management team refused to help or accommodate me. It was the worst time of my entire life.
@accountforwastingtime

Doesn't surprise me at all! I did the program back in 2010. I think MK stayed open way later back then. We'd consistently work 10-12 hours, 5-6 days a week, a mix of day and overnight shifts...like 6pm-4am one day and 2pm-12am the next. I don't remember ever getting overtime. I was constantly sick working there. Everyone thought I was crazy when I self-termed but I just knew my worth smh between that and how badly they handled housing stuff, no way. Nothing wrong with leaving a bad job for something better, Disney is no exception.

But yesss my friends in the program didn't get it at all- but they also worked steady 35-40hr weeks & were always off by 9 and had great coworkers&managers 🙄EVERYONE i worked with who was FT seemed miserable! Edit: omg just remembered how we had a missing kid in our area, the parents were SO freaked out and my manager was so...annoyed! @@accountforwastingtime I didn’t get off until 11:30 and the buses didn’t pick us up until 12:30. Then get home at 1 lol. Then they’d have the nerve to schedule us 8am and because we “got off at 11:30” they could have us come in. Former CM here. Left in 2010. The tailspin started around 2000 from my experience. That's when I started noticing the CP cast members seemed to not be able to change roles very easily. Sad to see it hasn’t changed. CMs make the experience for the guests. The good ones have very little incentive to stay. It makes me sad. The problem seems to very often revolve around passionate CMs placed in a bad role for them with no way out. They lose a lot of talent by outsourcing placement vs working with department leads to know people's strengths and weaknesses. You end up feeling like you're just a name on a spreadsheet along with 60 thousand other names.

Hello! I started my college program at the same time as you did and I wasn’t happy at all with what they chose for me. I was super excited to start my journey with Disney and even after I found out my role I was willing to give it my best. I worked in attractions and after training I was still not 100% with working the main console and it scared me so much having to control the ride without the right amount of time needed for me to know what I was doing. I got to a point where I got an anxiety attack because the ride broke down while I was main console and I had no idea what I needed to do to stop and power up the ride and then having to evacuate everyone. This happened on my third week and I told them I didn’t want to continue working console but I had to since we all had work in rotation so I ended up having to leave. It’s scary to have other peoples life in your hands while you don’t know what you’re doing.

Yeah, it’s scary. Sorry for what you had to go thru. It’s a shame, because it all could have been remedied by training you more and having you shadow someone for at least a couple weeks so you can be strong at your position. Disney dropped the ball by putting you in that position. Hope you are doing well now.

Totally understand - that’s a lot of pressure. However, you had a chance to learn it as quickly as possible. I’m sure there were other cast members that would’ve been willing to give you a quick overview. I’ve noticed a trend with the younger college students - if they’re asked to do something new, they don’t have the skills to quickly adjust and figure it out. Instead an anxiety attack happens and the opportunity is ruined. Again, I don’t wish an anxiety attack on anyone but something isn’t right with how our younger generations are reacting to being asked to do something new. Take notes, remain focused and get the job done. You’ll feel like a million bucks once you realize it wasn’t as hard as you thought it would be.

I totally understand. Disney put me in a an attraction position that I was totally uncomfortable with. But I tried to work through my fears and doubts. In the end, I ended up getting badly injured because my trainer was rushing me so much. I now have a permanent knee injury. Don’t ever let someone force you to do something you are not fully prepared for. I am glad you stood your ground, even if it meant leaving the program.

Hi Meg, I can totally get your reasons for leaving the DCP. My wife has severe Scoliosis so I totally get the back issue. In addition, she is 4 ft 11 and the height issue can be challenging. It is too bad that companies cannot see that medical conditions can complicate our jobs. Myself I have 50 lbs weight limit I am called on to move stuff that I am not supposed to. Disney should have placed you in guest relations for your personality would have complimented that role. As they say when one door closes another door opens. Good luck and God bless.

It's funny to me when you talk about your houseperson role because when I was in Disney mid-February staying at Riverside, I experienced a lot of things that were very un-Disney. I use a scooter due to a knee dislocation, and I often had to run over bags of trash and linens that were just strewn across the paths that were often there for many hours and even once overnight due to not being picked up. It's no shock that they needed that role filled. I'm sorry to hear that your start to being a Floridian didn't work out the way you wanted, but I'm so excited to hear about this new job and hope that everything goes more smoothly going forward!

When companies value the dollar more than the person then that’s where it becomes a problem. I wish Disney valued their people more- I think Walt did but they need to get back to their roots. I worked for the Company for two years- a salaried position overseas not in Parks with good people in authority over me. But I couldn’t see myself long term with Disney in the US really or transferring to a position in Parks. There is much I love about Disney but the values are currently misplaced especially in how cast is valued- especially cp. I noticed this the last time I visited WDW. Honestly not sure when I’ll be back to the Parks. And I consider myself a super fan. Best wishes to you. Enjoy being a guest and give some magic to the cast members.🧚‍♂️

Im sorry all of this happened. As a DCP Alumni and self Termed CM, i kinda expected all of that. Disney is a master at selling the dream, but when you become a CM, you quickly find out the dream is not meant for you. It is still a great experience, but there is a reason why there is so much turn over. I too have scoliosis, chose not to do surgery. I had a restriction, however It was ignored by Disney and did hurt myself. I was made to feel like I was an inconvenience. The union did nothing because i was part time, so i quit. Sorry about the roommate situation, sadly I can also relate lol im so glad you were able to take over the lease

I appreciate how delicate you are about explaining why you can’t do the job. That being said, I am going to say what a lot of people your age are afraid to say because of the cruel reactions you’re going to get from other people. No one, and I mean not a single person, wants to do that job. People that do that job do it because they do not have another choice. I have met doctors, architects, and other professionals that end up doing that job because they are transplants from another Country and there’s a language barrier or monetary barriers to redeveloping those careers here . And I have met people that sadly and simply do not have good skills and get stuck doing it. As a woman with adult children, I can confidently tell you, that your parents did not send you to college, so that you could clean up for other people. On the contrary, they probably wanted you to go so that you wouldn’t have to clean up after other people. Many of the cleaning people I have a come across during my travels, are far older, weaker, and smaller than you. And they have had to push those big things around because they have no other choice. If you broke away from this for medical reasons, I’m glad you did. But for anyone else, who gets stuck doing that job, during a college program, I don’t blame them for walking away and not feeling like they should have to provide any reason at all. That being said, I don’t have anything against young people working in restaurants, retail, or in the type of job you described here just because it gives you A great frame of reference, and a better appreciation for the people that do have to do the job. It is an honorable, difficult job that should receive considerably higher wages . Great video! I wish you lots and lots of success and whatever your heart desires.

It seems like Disney made the call to view DCP as just cheap labor with the assumption that enough young people with stars in their eyes would keep applying to make up for any additional turnover they cause. Unfortunately for them in the current job market there are plenty of other options so if they keep the pay low and don't provide the 'magic' (e.g. actual interesting career training etc) people like you will justifiably leave! It especially seems like medical accommodations are not being handled well at all, based on other peoples' stories as well. Best of luck to you!

Disney has always viewed the DCP that way :/ CPs aren't union, I don't even think they have to pay overtime because it's an "internship" (at least they didn't when I did the program) and they don't have to pay benefits even though you're working way over 40 hrs/week usually. You're exactly right though, now there's so much more opportunity out there, even in the parks otherwise outside of the CP. No reason to put up with any cp BS when you can easily find something else down there.

Its sad that a lot of larger hotels feel the need to do random security room "checks" after the shooting incident in Las Vegas a few years ago. Sign of the times. I am reading more and more issues with Disney and how they handle cast members issues post pandemic. I'm glad you've found another job and your parents have been supportive. ✌Regarding continuing to vlog about Disney - there are a few channels that already deal with the parks and food. All have similar content. If your looking to increase subscribers (and profits) I suggest your channel not just focus exclusively on Disney - a mix of something that separates yourself from the other Disney/Orlando vloggers.
