I Quit My Teaching Job Mid Year…

Well here is the announcement/update I mentioned in yesterday’s vlog…
I have decided to end my teaching career after this semester. I am not exactly sure where I am going from here but I do know that I have made the right choice.

I’ve been watching your journey for awhile and I’ve just got to say I am so sorry that teaching was not the career you hoped it would be ❤ sending you love and support on this new brighter chapter of your life! This is my 9th year teaching 1st grade. The past two years have been extremely overwhelming and overstimulating. Lack of subs leaves teachers with no breaks and behaviors are only getting worse. I have been contemplating leaving teaching as well and the behaviors I have are no where near what you have experienced. You are making the right choice. I am a teacher retiring in May and I totally understand. Teaching today is so different, and much harder, than when I started many years ago. It has gotten worse each year. I am so sorry you had this experience! This is one of the many reasons we homeschool. We do not want our kids stuck for 7-8 hours a day with these kids. Our kids have friends from homeschool activities, community activities, and church. They still see the bad behavior, but it isn’t for 40 hours a week. No adult, teen, or child should have to deal with this.

I'm a former teacher who was fortunate to have been able to retire from public school. I am now a volunteer teacher at a Christian school. I am able to teach. It is about the difference in the way the parents have taught their children from day 1 in their lives. Christian parents bring their children up to respect those in authority and to love learning. Homeschooling is a great alternative. God bless you and all teachers who have been literally driven out of the classroom.😢

I teach preschool and I have one specific friend who does all of the above behaviors you just described and I was told nothing else can be done if the mother of this child does not move forward with the paper work referral process and I know how hard this can be...

I’m so sorry you didn’t have the respect and support you deserve. You shouldn’t have been guilt tripped into trying to stay and I’m glad you didn’t. I know you tried everything in your power to stay. Better days and jobs are coming. Don’t forget God’s got you. I volunteered a lot at a hospital on the business side and loved it. It was really just managing a doctors office but it was so stress free and I was really left alone most of the day to do to do my job. I also did patient transfers which is just wheeling patients to the surgery room and their cars after. Super easy and you only work 3, 12’s. I might go back to that. I currently sub but I definitely know what you are talking about in the schools. I’m subbing now since it fits my schedule but after college graduation I don’t think I’ll continue. I do know I won’t be taking a permanent teaching position anytime soon.

I still remember my shock and heartbreak during my first year teaching when a child threw a whiteboard at my head (just one of MANY behaviors in my class) and the first question to me was "Well, what did YOU say or do to that child to make them react that way?" I could not even respond. It was the first cold realization that teachers are valued very little. I'm still plugging along in my 8th year but I am not sure I'll retire from this.

I’m so proud of you! You will find your path and have shown that you have self respect and boundaries. It’s stories like yours and thousands of other teachers that make me feel so much more sure on my decision to move away from teaching after 2011 and just this year pull my son out to homeschool. It was like every year that passed the kids in his school became worse, more disrespectful, the teachers more stressed and the kids lazier, dumber and more vapid every year.

This seems to be such a universal issue in teaching today. Thankfully, the behaviors at my school are minor compared to some and my admin is pretty supportive. That being said, I have come to realize that the reason most incidents don’t get reported and handled appropriately is because (at least at my school) anytime we give a kid detention, suspend them, or put them in ISS, it goes against our school. The superintendent and assistant superintendents in my district harp on the principals about our “red marks” constantly. Those red marks come from poor performance and achievement, poor attendance, and the number of disciplinary issues. That’s why I think most behaviors in my district aren’t reported or handled and it’s ridiculous.

I am really sorry for everything you have and are going through. The Schools in the USA as well as many other countries seem to not value the Teachers/Educational staff what so ever and seem to be ignoring the fact that staff are leaving in the ten folds in some Counties or in the Country I live in they refer to it as District's. Some of the reasons you mentioned as to why you are leaving your current position is why among many other's I chose to work as an Early Childhood Educator and worked with Toddlers and as a Preschool Teacher. All though Preschool Teachers / Early Childhood Educators have to go through so many issues and are often looked down on for not being "A real teacher" as some people think young children do not really "learn much" and are not worth the effort outside of their family's care.(It is quite the opposite in reality ) I would still prefer to work with this age group over older children , especially with the behavior issues becoming more and more out of hand. The children I worked with were the positive part of the job for me (most of the time). I really hope you have far better support and much more professional and compassionate management/board/Principal in your next teaching job, wishing you the very best.

As someone with an autoimmune condition, I feel you. I also have a skin condition that has gone through some pretty bad flares due to trauma/stress in the past. In my very first year student teaching, like you I got sick so many times. I threw up in 3 different occasions throughout the year, and im someone who rarely ever throws up. Im now in my first "official" year as a hired teacher. I ended up taking a leave of absence for my mental health. I sort of felt like such a failure but I was having intrusive thoughts of hurting myself that wouldnt go away and knew I needed to do something. Now im scheduled to soon to go back and honestly I dont want to. The stress of full time teaching is just tremendous with all the student behavior and overstimulation and guilt and shame. Im glad youre getting out.

Thank you for sharing! Currently, I'm enrolled at WGU for a teaching degree. I work at my son's elementary school and it can be extremely stressful. Your video helps me to keep reminding myself if I don't like teaching once I graduate, I can quit and that's ok. Good for you! I admire your integrity (sticking to your word to yourself and the administration), follow-thru, and bravery (in not knowing what you were going to do despite the bills not stopping). You did the right thing! One of the sad things one learns in education is why our society is so dangerous - you see the complete lack of standards and accountability and complete enablement of of problematic behaviors under skewed logic/reason (like your administrators gave you). Too many school administrators fall all over themselves in protecting out-of-control students "rights" while completely ignoring the rights of the other students and staff members forced to be around them. It's also interesting how many marginal teachers choose to go on and become administrators (to escape their classroom horrors), and now get to mess up a whole building or district. We also have far too many parents who have skewed views of entitlement and "rights" and use that as a means thru which to manipulate and bully administrators. As a result far too many classrooms are highly toxic environments with teaching staff walking on egg shells every moment, everyday, all-day long. The solution to most of the biggest problematic issues are really not that hard; however they become impossible when trying to untangle the financial aspect, egos of the "decision makers", kooky woke indoctrinations/interventions pushed and advocated by those whose true intention is personal profit, and coersive/manipulative underlying dynamics. The sad truth is that it is not "fixable" b/c most people don't want to acknowledge the truth, will not support personal accountability with meaningful/immediate/consistent consequences, and that it's easier to rationalize the issues by explaining it and expecting it to be solved by those in the mental health field - they are always our "go-to" for feel-good, quick-fix answers.

I'm so sorry you've had this experience with teaching. I teach high schoolers, and so I assumed the behaviors you were describing were from older students. I did not expect it to be younger ones. Please know this is not your fault. You seem to be a wonderful person. Teaching is incredibly difficult, and it seems to be getting more so. I am writing not from the US but from South Africa. Pretty much the same situation here, maybe worse, maybe not. I have also quit and had to see all my hard work for years go up in smoke. I do feel for you Brookelynne and you deserve all the understanding and support you can get, but we should keep our eye on the ball here: This is about more than just us as teachers who are being abused at the workplace; it is about the educational system globally going up in flames. Good for you, I’m sorry but some of these kids (and their parents!) are completely out of pocket. I’m sorry to hear your experience is ending like this and has left you somewhat disenchanted from teaching but I firmly believe there are bigger and better things for you in the future. You absolutely have to do what’s best for you and having to deal with a bunch of disrespectful 6 year olds (AND their parents!!!) doesn’t seem to be the way at all. I feel for you. I want to encourage you not to give up on public education. I understand the challenges in the classroom, but there are alternatives. Maybe look into counseling or student support if this is a space that takes you directly away from the teaching environment. I spent 9 years in the classroom as a Special Education teacher and knew after my first year that teaching in the classroom was respectfully not sustainable long term. Most classroom teachers move to different positions whether it be counseling, coaching, or administration. Good luck to you.

This is why we lose such good teachers! I work as a substitute teacher and I'm currently working on my licensure to teach in the public school system. Watching your video has opened my eyes more into what I've dealt with as well in the schools. The administration doesn't want to look bad so they don't go out of their way to help the teachers. They want to cuddle the children by giving them candy and calling it a day. Making it always the teachers fault and being looked at like they are the problem. It's really sad! I was a para educator. I was told that a kid I was gonna help hits. I thought this was like slaps or light hitting. No this is a punch. And it’s random. I was hit so bad I had to go through therapy with my arm. Luckily I ended up getting a different kid. I completely get what you are going through. Hope you find your passion with Disney.

I commend you for how long you lasted, having uncompromised standards, and knowing when enough is enough. I taught music in a public school for all of one day and was done. Twenty-five to thirty students per class, five classes a day...every grade. I asked for assistance and was told that there was no one to help and "that's just the way it is." I balled at the end of the day as I straightened up the room, put my stuff in a box, and said au revoir....

Heavenly father has a plan for you love. You will look back on it someday and understand what the point of it all was. I paid a lot of money to become an RN. I made a lot of sacrifices to work ER and ICU. It ate away at my soul. Gave me PTSD and I have been on sleeping medications for years because of it. I fell into working for my school district for the last three years (really just wanted to stalk my kid) and now Im working towards my masters. I just want to teach future nurses, eventually it will all come full circle for me. I can't tell you how heart breaking it was to realize I wasn't cut out for nursing, no-one respected me, admin would just make our jobs harder, and then the government came in hard with lists of demands making our jobs unbearable. It's very similar to teaching. You did the right thing. You will find a home and admin that our supportive. I thought that was one very beneficial part of subbing, I have seen how all the schools, charter and public, operate in my area. No two are created equal. Luckily my daughter goes to a wonderful school with a great staff and that's now where I work.

Listen, I’m not saying things aren’t bad. SOME kids are. my last year was hell with a student that would flip tables, walk on them, elope, maybe completed 5 whole assignments for the whole school year. The support staff are just as overwhelmed as teachers are. I spent this last summer reflecting on what i could different since I can’t change what my admin or support staff are going to do. I spent time going over child development, strategies etc to prepare myself. If this keeps happening to you and you really want to teach, buck up and know teaching is hard…EVERY YEAR. take time to self reflect. Read, watch other successful teachers do whatever to make changes because doing the same thing over and over is only going to yield the same results. I am sorry you are going though that. I am a foreign and when I came to America I was shocked of the entitlement of the parents and kids. Specially millennials. I don’t think is a Covid problem because other countries have the same rules to homeschool their kids and the kids are just the same.but other countries have very strict rules for students and parents plus teachers are well pay and have a lot of support from parents and the school in my country. Have you consider to teach foreigns? I use to take English classes in college and private schools. Students are nice and want to learn because they need to advance in their careers or for their jobs. Hope you are doing ok now. Don’t forget that your health is more important that anything. I think you make a right decision. I feel the education system in USA has so many issues that aren’t being taken seriously and is getting worse.

One of the many common themes I hear in these videos is the rewarding of bad and downright violent behavior by admin. I am continually shocked and horrified by hearing (and reading in the comments) about violent behavior being rewarded with candy/snacks and other treats! I am a millennial (born 1990). I remember being in school and getting called to the office for anything disciplinary was A BIG DEAL and NOT something any of us wanted. I never talked back to my teachers, let alone threw chairs or made threats. If we were given candy or treats by teachers, it was to reward us for good behavior and/or academic achievement, and those treats were RARE because basic respect and class participation/effort were the BARE MINIMUM. It is truly shocking to me how much has changed since then. Teachers deserve better and I wholly support them in quitting to find employment in which they will no longer be subjected to such abuse and disrespect.

Student teaching might not be so bad in terms of learning how to effectively manage behaviors like this and having a mentor. I know its hard because of no pay, but if you really want to teach might be worth looking into.

"Effectively manage behaviors?" No the parents need to step up and schools need to hold kids accountable. Student teaching is not like regular teaching. I'm not sure how she got a permit to teach in the classroom but going through a complete university program and student teaching is best because time is the most important factor in developing as a teacher. However, these behaviors are not her fault.

I had a 4 year old throw a chair at me for saying he needed to finish his lunch before he could eat cookies. His parents pack him an obnoxious amount of sweets for meals and I try to intervene when I can. Parents these days seem clueless on child development unless they work with children, themselves. It's a system-wide problem. Even in pre-k these kids are encouraged to be violent and fragile. We cannot give time-outs. We can only redirect. We cannot scold... even if a child is choking another one... the only option is redirect. Redirecting is meant for infants and toddlers. Children are capable of understanding consequences. An older two year old can certainly understand consequences. If we can't discipline at school then the responsibility lies solely on the parents-- the parents that are too busy to read a child development book. The parents need to understand that every single child on the planet has been and will be traumatized at the fault of no one. It is an unavoidable part of life. Parents are so afraid of traumatizing their kids that they will allow the wildest behavior. The sad reality is that the kids will end up having a traumatic life built upon the consequences of their actions as adults. At that point it is way harder to correct a bad behavior because it is a lifelong habit.

its got to be hard to be a teacher because knowing myself even if policies are in place i couldnt help turn into mama. "Excuse me miss maam? you keep disrupting this class and you can go in the corner and miss out on fun time. Do you understand?" at that point I dont even care about fighting the mamas either because bring it to me. your kids need discipline, spanking on the rears and consistency. Same with mine. Hes 12 he gets out of line too and its exhausting. I only have one. I can't imagine having 20-30 something for 8 hours a day. Ive been homeschooling my son and have to put him back in public school due to financial reasons and I promise you that if he is disrespectful to his teachers and they are being completely reasonable there will be problems for him. Teachers need a teachers aid in every grade nowadays. What happened to the older kids sitting in on a class for the younger students? Do they not do that anymore? Also, I truly understand that parents are exhausted because we are working twice as hard to make the same amount of money and our kids are getting pushed by the wayside. This country as a whole is falling apart and they really are trying to destroy the family. Take out the parents to get to the kid. Lord help us

First in foremost I just wanna say don’t cry and don’t be sad I know your hurt about everything but this is just a sign that God is opening another door for you to enter in. As a parent of a 6th grader and 1st grader it is every parents job to discipline their child when bad behavior occurs, the school made no attempt to get the counselor or social worker involved to speak to the child and parent no teacher should feel like he or she is being bullied or mistreated by a student. Something that this country’s School System needs to work on immediately. God bless

I only have 3 more years to go. I can relate to all that was said here. Admins need to do their job of taking care of disruptive students in a timely and more stringent manner. Candy for them? What a joke!!!! Know I am praying and God will lead you to the right position. Maybe try private school????

In our schools in India, if the child does not complete HW, then the next day the teacher would beat them with slippers or sticks. I never got slipper beatings though. The parents cannot command or demand teachers; they have to work together, and even to this day, most of the students respect and fear teachers in our schools nation wide. I think we will come and work in western countries in the future, as it seems these children may not be employable in the future.

There is no balance in dealing with students. The big buzz is "trauma informed" - yes, we need to be aware and let certain things go when dealing with these students but when they cross the line, there should be consequences, trauma or not. p.s. in the Western world we tend to go to extremes with how we deal with behaviours, there is a balance, think YinYang but the Western world seems not to have this balance. ☯ Sorry to hear about your ordeal resulting in you having to make a decision to care for your mental and physical health. p.s. I'm continue to be a substitute teacher.
