I quit touch typing after 2 years, and maybe you should too

When I learned how to Touch Type 2 years ago, it was a journey that transformed the way that I looked at life. I was finally able to type faster and do my work with speed! But now, I've quit learning and that has given me some very interesting wisdom on self-improvement that I think you could benefit from!

your voice will always be faster than typing speed and has no learning curve maybe a little. watch a vid of a person speaking 200 wpm it's not that fast. add in punctuation and numbers which tends to slow most people typing speed. it's a clear winner.

In my opinion there's no need to think too much about it. Touch typing is a great skill to have, and once you've learned it, you won't just forget it like that. Whenever you need to type you'll do it efficiently, and looking at the computer screen instead of the keyboard. I learned touch typing in 2018, and from jan 2020 to jan 2021 I didn't use any computers, when I came back I still knew how to touch type without needing to practice

Let's be honest, touch typing is one of those skills you cannot go wrong with, much like working out. In a world full of computers, any reason to improve your typing speed is a good reason. The average typing speed is about 40wpm and it is an extremely low bar to surpass. If touch typing allows you to be twice as fast and you're above average speed, it's definitely worth it

For those worried about losing touch typing, I learned it like 17 years ago in elementary school, proceed to not use PCs for a decade outside of rare occasions at school, and proceeded to have zero problems coming back. @@Yadeehoo I was young and was gaming on a PS2. Parents had a PC but we barely used it, and otherwise I was like 11. The iPod touch was out and I’d be using that instead of a desktop or laptop. Once I got out of high school I got my own dedicated system and it’s been history ever since. As for ISO, I went to Swedish so the changes were relatively minor. 3 new letters, the number row changed, and a 3rd layer for symbols was introduced (hold ctrl+alt while pressing the key to get it). Shift on the left shrunk which was a small adjustment for gaming, but honestly the only real quirk is the ctrl+alt keys. The @ sign for example is hidden in that layer on the Swedish variant which is irritating, but 95% of the keyboard is effectively identical. After about two weeks I had my bearings somewhat solid, and after about a year I didn’t even notice the changes anymore, I was just used to it.

Touch typing isn't necessary if you don't want to look at the keyboard (at all) and instead look at the screen. I don't do touch typing and I probably use like... 7-8 fingers? The thing is that once you practice long enough and your muscle memory builds up, you'll naturally know where the keys are.

I learned to type on my own when I got my own computer when I was young and I learned to type with just a few fingers and never really thought much about it. Currently, I average like high 80 to 90wpm and can type without looking at my keyboard. I found out a while back about people who use all their fingers and I was shocked because I didn't know or people told me I was weird for typing with only a few fingers. I'm still debating on whether or not to learn this because I already type fast enough but I also wanna see if I can try typing even faster, I'm just worried I'll slow down by learning a new way to type

Yeah, I learned how to type when I was really young, using only 6 of my fingers. When I was 10 I took typing classes at my school, and was constantly told I was typing incorrectly, even when I was the fastest (about 100wpm) in the class by far. I never bothered correcting how I typed, and I've massively improved my typing speed (165 average) Unless you want to massively improve, or your work involves typing a lot, you shouldn't bother changing your typing style.

This sounds good, but going back and rearranging the synatx probably takes the same amount of time or longer as it would if u type even slightly above average. To me it seems more efficient to just think things out and get it right the first time while youre typing. But if voice to text works for you then thats great.

100 percent true. Little background : I was never comfortable with a computer until age 19 as I never owned one and Computer Lab till high school had 5 persons sharing. Joins college. Got my first laptop.... story continues I used hunt and peck method and speed was maximum 20 wpm. I was sad. Then I came to know about touch typing. Initially, I was devastated that I continuously got 10-15 wpm. I thought I could never in my life reach 40wpm. But then my strong desire to type faster like my friends kept me going and soon I started to realize the speed increasing. As I type now it's around 60+wpm. I am more than happy. That's a life lesson as well. If you're interested enough and has strong will to learn you can master the topic no matter how hard it is. Note : Patience is key.

touch typing increases speed by a lot once you learn it, HOWEVER, I don't think this is the reason to learn it. The main reason why you should learn how to touch type, it's because it allows you to transfer your thoughts into words on the screen, allowing you to focus on what you are thinking, rather than what keys you are pressing. For example, while I am typing this comment, I am pretty much just "typing my thoughts" if that makes sense. warning: it's going to be really frustrating the first week/weeks or month, however once you get the hang of it, it will be very worth it

my delemma is I type alreayd okay 50 wpm with hunt and peck. but I only use left hand - middle finger. right hand- index finger. 2 fingers total. but i type fast. however I get migraines from having to look down all the time when doing heavy data entry. Right now im learning and the G AND H keys are killing me. I CANNOT for the life of me stop confusing G and H for F and J. It feels so unnatural and freakish!! Its really frustrating.!! Bceause I can already type fast with 2 fingers only. Its just I make a lot of typos... but this feels impossible arghhhh. and then Im guessing theres a whole other trainign for 10 key by touch.

If you are looking down and that is causing you migraines, either learn how to touch type or look up two-finger typists that don't look down and learn from them. If the looking down is causing issues, you have to stop doing it one way or another.

Tbf having gone from 'proficient' at touch typing in the 50-60 wpm range to better at about 70-80 wpm, I feel like the extent to which my conscious brain needs to get involved in the typing has gone down further. I'm confident that I'll need to get to about 100 wpm to really feel like the typing is just happening while my conscious brain takes care of other cognitive loads. It might just need more practice regardless of speed improvement, but I'm sure the speed will go up significantly with said practice.

Touch-typing is as normal to me as breathing. I can touch type on almost any keyboard (though I prefer the ones that put the keys where they ought to be in the Model M). I agree with your philosophy. I am a software engineer and I want to learn how to type properly but I don’t think typing at 100+ word per minute is really necessary. A lot of programming is thinking about what you type. With predictive text alot of it is pressing a single key and then enter. Also in my work proper typing only really matters when I need to write a hunch of new code which isn’t very common. It would be much more of a benefit for me to go from 40-70 in my profession than 70-100. Currently I think I can hit 50wpm using hunt and peck on a good day but I am also able to touch type to a degree using that method.

Personally I will never quit because I just enjoy typing. I went from like 70-80 words per minute with like 3 fingers, constantly looking at the keyboard and making a lot of mistakes, to 130 words per minutes, with a much smoother typing, with way less mistakes. It took me some time, but it's so much more efficient, and kinda satisfying too.

This seems to be quite common phenomenon - you see the same with Barefoot shoes - videos like "things the barefoot industry doesn't tell you" and you end up realising it was an advocate of barefoot shoes all along - and the thing it, it works as a way to get people to click...but to those who don't have the time to click and watch, and just see the thumbnail, it subconsciously counts as a "vote" against the subject, which can be misleading.

I don't know why people slow themselves out with all those "courses" and "educational software" when it comes to touch typing. You've most likely played enough games and sent enough messages to know where each and every button is - keys like P for pause, I for inventory, WSAD, Q and E to lean, R to reload, F for flashlight, M for map, T and Y for chats, G for grenades, H for health packs, Z and X and C for emotes, V for voice comms, J for journals - literally almost every f**king key you've been hitting for years without looking. Open any editor, put index fingers on F and J (that's why they have those little perky bits), *fix your eyes on the screen and start typing very very slowly*, correct every mistake as you go without looking at the keys unless you really didn't guess where a given symbol is after 2+ tries (symbol, because it simply won't happen for letters). And after 2+ hours you're typing as fast as you did before, i.e. with your eyes on the keys. That's it. You're a touch typer. From this moment onward you're not loosing time, only improving.

I find touch typing to be more useful than talking. When you're proficient enough, your hands are doing the work for you without much thought. Especially if you're doing something like programming. The complexity of what you're trying to do is demished when you take all of the work out of the skill.

I have exactly the same keyboard as you and I hate it, I'm pretty sure that if you try to type on another keyboard, you'd certainly improve your speed! And I'm not talking about expensive ones, I myself type much faster on the laptop keyboard.

I have that keyboard too. It is absolutely terrible. Its only redeeming value is its wireless. It has no other values. I use mechanical keyboards now and I am in love. Mechanical keyboards make typing so much easier it silly. I agree with you, even the laptop keyboard would be better than that Logitech keyboard. If you type regularly I would recommend getting a mechanical keyboard its really night and day.

I have the same keyboard too. and it is terrible if you use it as your main keyboard that you use daily since that's not its intended use case. It's best used as a couch keyboard, plugged in to your smart TV. that way you can type faster on search bars rather than "typing" with clumsy TV remotes
