The midget truck makes a great small town runabout, it's tiny engine takes no time to warm up, you can just hop in and go! and it's small size and bed, make it a perfect sub for a golf cart style atv when driving your redneck friends around your Florida or Iowan suburb, any place that allows street use of vehicles that don't meet safety reqs so long as you keep it in zones with a low speed limit. The Midget II truck would make a great tailgate vehicle for a highschool football game or baseball or taking brush or garden waste to the city pile. It's a legit vehicle for a lot of white people.

There was something resembling an AMG version. The A210 Evolution came out after the face-lift. It had 140 horsepower, but, light as it was, that made it far less slow. The successor was offered as the A200 Turbo. That had 193 horsepower, so it finally got somewhere.

On paper it’s good, in reality it’s still an A-Class and Mercedes can’t make a manual to save their life. That level of power in a Polo or Fiesta however would be great.

@@xx-----------xx873 both manual and automatics were offered in the A200 Turbo. It wasn't meant to be a hot hatch, but a junior Autobahn cruiser. The Evolution was more the... Convolution. It had a very tough ride, but still lacked speed. A mess, but super QUIRKY!

It was a CVT I believe with stepped ratios, it''s smooth and make it feel like a Mercedes but I couldn't get it to lock up, so it was super slow. You would have to have been very very old to buy one new, considering a Passat cost less at the time. Still way more interesting that whatever piece of junk his 140 is lol@@rubenvanpraagh8791

Fun story, back in the day my friends and I went for night time runs of our favorite backroad in central Germany. It's an old hill-climb road up, and the way down is even tighter with straight stretches that allow around 120 kph. I had a Skoda with a 1,9 TDI, a friend with a W124, another friend with a Audi A3 and one girl, that had an Diesel a-class. No turbo on the a-class. We went so hard in the a-class, that the brakes were red hot glowing. We thought it was weirdly fun. (Btw all cars were on steel wheels with hub caps, never will forget the glowing red discs behind the steelies)

New segment idea with a different take of Top-Gear's lap: 1.) Keep the Mercedes and guests do a hot lap. 2.) Have a standard fast car for all guests to do a hot lap (american muscle maybe?) 3.) Guests can bring their own car and compete against Doug in his Porsche. Times are added together for a final Doug score.

Fun fact, there was a one-off version, *A38*, where they put two engines in this thing. There was also an A32K, with 354 horsepower - just because.

Takes me back to my days of driving my mom's "old" '94 Geo metro, got it up to 90 once. ...Speedometer stopped at 85, but the needle went to about 5 past. All with about 52hp🐌 Also really fun to drive in a crosswind with no power steering, had to clinch the steering wheel with both hands and knees

AMG did make the A38 AMG which was a twin engine version. they never brought it to market but there is a drivable concept. edit: they actually build 4 of these.

I owned one of these A140’s for almost ten years. The normally aspirated engine was gutless, but I loved driving it. I was in tears when I had to scrap it (failed it’s roadworthy and would have cost thousands to fix), like losing an old friend. I’d buy and own another one tomorrow. Doug, ship this back to Europe and I will but it off you 🙂

I owned a 1999 A160 from new until 2013. I never tracked it but that’s not the point of the car. I don’t recall that the brakes were spongy so there may be something wrong with yours. I would get the brake fluid changed. The best thing about this car is it’s carrying capacity as you can remove all the seats, including the front passenger seat to turn it into a true minivan. My least favourite feature was the auto clutch system, I would have preferred a pedal and it was an engine out job to change the clutch plate. I think the cost of maintenance that’s why they are rare now.

In Europe, there was a sporty variant called the A210 Evolution. It had 140hp out of a 2.1L 4-cylinder. AMG made some crazy W168's but they didn't make it into production. One was the A32 and the other the A38. The A32 AMG had the supercharged 3.2L V6 out of the C32 AMG pushing 354 HP to the rear wheels. What can go wrong 🤣🤣🤣🫎🫎. Then there was the A38 featuring 2 1.9L engines with 250 hp. One in the front and one in the rear 🤣🤣🤣.
