I Rage Quit Ruin (Playthrough & Review)

So, ages ago I promised to do a playthrough of Ruin, but then I ended up Rage Quitting and had my footage so zoomed out that it was unusable. BUT I have finally gotten it fixed! Now you can watch the walkthrough that never was and see what drove me to the brink- along with seeing my complicated feelings on ruin post-rage and current day.

What disappoints me about Daycare is that they tried to make the second half of the gameplay not involve Eclipse at all. We get introduced to a new character that Sun was VERY HEAVILY hinted to know about, and he’s on screen for 20 seconds. And then we deal with Endos and that’s it before we go right back to Monty Golf. Like, what the hell Steelwool?

Yeah, I get it. It was obvious from the start that it wasn't really Gregory talking over that walkie, and the nodes really broke up the pacing. I did enjoy the ruined Freddy bit though. The detail of his stomach hatch resembling a mouth was a neat callback to fnaf 4.

I KNEW the ending being spoiled had something to do with the Mimic. When you initially mentioned how it was spoiled on you I predicted that it had something to do with them because the community went WILD with the character for a very long time. *Get ready boys and girls, it's story time!* When Ruin first released, I didn't have time to play it right away so I tried very hard to avoid spoilers so I could go in blind whenever I got around to it. I went out of my way to stay away from anything and everything to do with FNaF until all the hype had died down. Stayed away from Twitch, muted keywords on Twitter, even went as far as to open KZbin in an incognito window and stayed signed out. Despite all of that effort, it wasn't enough because the first day wasn't even over before a wave of both tagged and untagged posts of the Mimic were in my Twitter timeline. "RUIN" and "MIMIC" was stuck in my trending topics, and the next day when I accidentally went into KZbin while signed in, there was number of videos pushed to my front page showing both the ending and the Mimic. I was absolutely livid because despite my efforts to AVOID all the hype and spoilers, it STILL found a way to me. Even if I didn't slip up on the second day, it was all over social media for weeks. Maybe if you do another hot take video I should talk about how much I've come to dislike the Mimic. I remember hearing about them in the books and thinking they were a really cool idea, but ever since their inclusion in the game my views have shifted for many reasons aside from the above mentioned spoiling.

Something that frustrates me about this game is all the pointless scares. Falling cart, security bot, falling elevator, breaking vents, monty and chica, etc! All for just playing through the game, not as punishments like it's supposed to be. I mentioned it in a stream of the game counting just how many loud noises they abuse, and they said "Oh fnaf was always like this" BUT NO! The only jumpscare that wasn't a punishment before help wanted was the fake out in sister location with funtime foxy! Everything else, even if it didn't kill you, was punishing a mistake.

Swcurity Breach and RUIN might have issues but I will always adore the characters they introduced. Aka literally every character. The games might have not done everyone full justice, but that's what the fan content is for at this point. The mystery itself or journey is usually more fun as a community than just by itself.

Man, shout-out to TinyBuild for having bigger balls than FNaF. For one, actually including blood and simply saying their antagonist "killed those kids." If you hadn't heard yet, their cartoon show actually made Mr. "Hello, Neighbor" Peterson into a more intimidating villain than anything we've gotten from Steel Wool. Actually, the overall quality of the dialogue in that show avoids anything on the level of this "Well That Just Happened" verbal sludgefest that spews out of Cassie's mouth.

I have a lot of problems with Ruin, and one of my problems with Ruin is some of the fan service. Now now I don’t hate fan service, but I feel like some of the fan service in Ruin hurts the game. The daycare was extremely disappointing to me, the daycare attendant just sits in one spot and does nothing as Cassie goes around turning on the two generators(I’m pretty sure the only way you can die in the daycare is by approaching the daycare attendant before you’ve turned on both generators), and I was even more disappointed with Eclipse. I was hoping that Eclipse would be hostile like the others, but instead we get a 5 second scene of him taking Cassie out of the daycare and then he’s gone. The sub plot of getting Chica that spare voice box, I hated it. It went no where and it makes no for it to be in an arcade game or for Cassie to put it in her because she’s given no reason to do so(it kind of feels like a scene or two are missing to give Cassie a reason to give Chica the voice box). And to make it even worst it goes no where because Chica powers down seemingly for good. It feels like that sub plot was there for people who wanted to fix the animatronics. Then there’s Roxy, I honestly hated Roxy’s role in Ruin, it felt forced and unearned to me. We only get one brief scene of them before Cassis shuts Roxy, and it made no sense to me that Roxy didn’t kill Cassie. I know people say it’s because they knew each other and that Roxy comforted Cassie in the past, but Freddy and Gregory are extremely close and Freddy will still kill Gregory if he gets taken over by the virus. Roxy’s whole role in Ruin to me felt like it was there for fans who wanted another animatronic ally, and Roxy was chosen because she was the most popular out of the three.

@shadowbowser5674 it’s fine if you like it, I’m just saying that to me just like with Roxy’s role the Chica sub plot felt forced. I’m glad some people liked it, but I’m just somebody who didn’t for a lot of reasons. If I’m being completely honest I’ve never liked the idea of fixing any of the Glamrock, even before Ruin. I’ve like the idea of getting it a DLC where we can choose one of them to be Gregory’s ally, but that’s about it. Since I’ve always like how with FNAF, not everyone can be saved, for example in FNAF2 there is nothing that can be done to prevent the DCI from happening, no matter what you do William will always get the Spring Bonnie suit and use it to kill more kids, and FNAF4 no matter what you do in the mini games CC will always be killed by Fredbear. SB continues that by not being able to fix the other animatronics and I like that, because FNAF it’s about tragedy, not everyone can be saved, and Freddy’s friends were one of many who can’t. Also IMO SB is one of the least scariest FNAF, it has some scary elements yes, but it’s still not very scary. Being able to fix the other animatronics would kill what little fear factor SB has. Since what is there to be afraid of when Gregory has 4 or even 5 animatronics protecting him. Especially when Vanny barely shows up, and the only other threats are the endos which are only in Bonnie Bowl(for some reason) and the basement, The DJ who’s only in the Dance arcade, and the Mini Music man who’s only in the vents, if we could free the others then it would kind of just trivializes the game at that point. And with Ruin one of it’s problems is that the animatronics are much easier to avoid nor do they show up as much as they did in SB, and considering the fact that it ended on a cliffhanger meaning it’s very possible there will be continuation were we most likely play as Gregory again, returning to the Pizzaplex along side Vanessa and Freddy to rescue Cassie. But if that does happen there’s not really gonna be much of a threat to worry about, since the daycare attendant was rebooted, Monty was electrocuted, Chica seemingly powered down for good, and Roxy was most likely destroyed by Mimic, and even if she wasn’t Cassie screaming at her somehow put it on safe mode so she wouldn’t be a threat. The only threats to worry about would be the endos, the horde of Mini Music men, Prototype Freddy, and possibly the DJ, all of which I’m pretty sure only appear in one area. And there’s also the fact of whoever we play as would most likely not have a Faz wrench with them since those are the only things that can reboot animatronics, Cassie had found hers in the Pizzaplex, and even then then Chica is most likely not functioning now. Now I will say this, it really should have been Chica not Roxy. All they would’ve had to do is change where Cassie get Chica’s upgrade, example on a work table, possibly with new upgrades for Roxy and Monty but unlike Chica's those were damaged. Then just have Chica at the end of her section gets stuck under something and well she’s trying to get unstuck Cassie sneaks behind her and reboots her. It would have been a lot more natural and far let force then it was with Roxy.

The relationship between Roxy and Cassie subplot is the worst thing this game has ever showcased. I don't understand what Steelwool was thinking, were they trying to get a quick cry out of the players (to which they hardly even cared), was this "fanservice" to make us love and somewhat feel bad for Roxy, or were they too worried that the game was "too dark" for the child protagonist to not have an animatronic ally like Freddy with them and being brutally murdered by literally all of them? Either way, it fails. I can go on, but that would take 2 pages of ranting.

I wouldn't say Cassie is more realistic than Gregory. If anything, Gregory's distrust and wariness is closer to what someone in that situation might actually feel, but Cassie represents more of what the fans WANT to feel, y'know? She helps the animatronics, she's sympathetic towards them right off the bat- she's what the audience wants, but that makes her more of a character and less of a person.

I agree with this, I like that Gregory doesn’t trust Freddy at the start even though Freddy is trying to help him and that he’s wary of what’s going on(and that wariness is warranted when Chica and Monty chase him into the office). And I completely agree with Cassie, now I don’t hate her but my problem with Cassie is that her character feels like it was made for the fans who felt sympathy for and wanted to fix the animatronics, while not giving her a reason to want to fix them or to feel bad for them. But as a result it makes her feel some what like a caricature of what some fans wanted rather than her own person.

"I like that Gregory doesn't trust Freddy at the start" But shouldn't he trust Freddy at the start?, none of them have tried to attack Gregory yet. Plus he's friends with Cassie, she would have told him about her friendly encounter with Roxy, who's her favourite. Just because Gregory was distrustful and unempathic to the animatronics, doesn't mean every single person will react/think the same way. Cassie was a long time regular at the Pizzaplex and was without friends, only getting one when Gregory showed up at her disaster of a party(how is she not relatable for many people?). I get the sense that Cassie has more of a connection to the animatronics like Roxy, Daycare Attendant, Chica and Bonnie. That's why she's so willing to help them and shows sympathy in these dangerous situations.

Roxy is after you!". Cassie I love you as a character I really do, but I don't think "Gregory" is in any danger as he has said he's under Roxy Raceway multiple times, how would a blind Roxy find him? I loved every single part of this. The mic being totally f-ed up and everything. I honestly thought it was a pretty good commentary gameplay. Ugh, thumbnail spoilers are the worst, especially since you can’t avoid them if you watch content about the game they’re spoiling. After a while, every FNAF KZbinr’s gonna be flooding you with the Mimic, so you only really have a limited time to actually experience the game before you get spoiled. Also, yes, Daycare’s too short >:( They should honestly just make a Superstar Daycare spinoff at this point

I distinctly remember Bonnie Bowling being the moment the game "started" to pick up, simply because the little music men managed to pose an actual threat. For once. I actually felt challenged trying to lure the little bastards and get the node before they came back, while avoiding one little music man (who I presume was bugged) who was following me around no matter how far I run from it. And then it was over. The only threat to the player is the MXES and he can be avoiding simply by taking off the mask, so he was never a threat. Without a threat, how am I meant to feel tension? And without tension, how is this game meant to achieve horror?

I actually ragequit security breach on the Afton fight. Not because it was glitching out for me or anything, but because I’m just not good enough at the game. I got most of the endings, and had fun, but the Afton fight was harder than it needed to be, especially since the only other boss fight in the game is against Monty.

I only stopped playing normal security breach on the part where you have to get to the main stage before the music stops playing. Any attempt to move forward quickly without hiding means a guaranteed jumpscare, and if you take longer than 0.0005 seconds vanny homes in her mysterious omniscience.

But seriously, as someone who thinks ruin is pretty cool, I feel like it has the same gameplay issue as Security Breach. All the parts that were tense and exiting were way too short and vastly outnumbered by padding sections. Security Breach had the Endos, and Ruin had the security nodes. Edit: Also I got the ending spoiled as well. A KZbinr I watch occasionally made fan art of the ruined characters, and in the selection was The Mimic. (This was in the same week the game came out)

I have absolutely no clue why everyone was praising the *gameplay* of Ruin. It is at its very best a low end limited remake of pac man. Most enemies pose no serious threat whatever, when there even are any enemies in an area, and those that do pose a threat only do so because the geography of the area forces the player into the area of extreme danger.

A trend I've been seeing in horror games, that comes through in your live commentary, is that the primary fear people have now in horror games is not the situation or the creature stalking you, but the fear that an annoying sequence or repetitive (usually hard and sort of unfair) chase is about to happen. The Roxy and Cassie backstory literally is the only reason to play Ruin, and I guess the Roxy character building in Security Breach and Help Wanted 2 are the only reasons to play those too, but might just be Roxy bias on my end.

Some theorize that every VR object is created from Cassie's mind.... GPT's are the only real world program that could generate stuff based on vague prompts, and that needs gigabytes->Terabytes of generalized assets to do so, so the more likely case is that someone made all the VR assets in universe, instead of an AI. Which means that Vanny and/or the Mimic Chose Cassie as their target.

Oh, that is some _crunchy_ audio bay _beeeeee_ What I love about this video is that it's so rare we hear you speak in such an off the cuff manner. You have a very particular cadence you use for your scripted videos, and it's so interesting to hear that same voice and a _bit_ of that same cadence, but with a bit more variety in tone and getting surprised by things. It just feels more "real", you know? Your voice is the thing that really endeared me to this channel so I'm always excited to hear you in different contexts. It's fun when you let yourself get a little weird, laugh at dumb jokes, sing little songs, and even when you get genuinely flustered and frustrated. You make a comment pretty early on in the playthrough about being cringe, but sometimes it's fun to see someone embrace the cringe when they're really passionate about something. Plus, you're a largely FNAF-based channel, there's just a little cringe baked into the whole thing.

We live for the🧂 Despite the game being a buggy mess I found Cassie endearing, especially in her compassion for the animatronics. She's the first player character that views them as friends that had horrible things happen to them instead of just threats. True that Gregory warms up to Freddy eventually, but he's an exception. And going from Help Wanted 2 to Security Breach to Ruin gave Roxy one of the best character arcs I've ever seen.

I guess we'll have to wait and see how the Blast To The Past and The Remains mods fix the main game and recreate what would've been. Whenever I rewatch the trailers, I get kind of mad and disappointed about the game that we didn't get (even if I liked the main game and loved Ruin).

Ruin certainly isn't perfect, but the biggest thing that made it worth it for me was going in blind. I had to work the day it came out, which meant I had to stay off the internet until I got to play it. I also didn't touch the books and basically knew nothing about the mimic, that definitely helped, but even knowing nothing the entire Gregory thing screamed "trap". I had a goofy smile when we helped Eclipse, I found Monty being a feral guard dog amusing, giving Chica back her voice felt like a small victory, and I was genuinely shocked with Freddy's reveal and chase. Oh and I absolutely did not flip when Roxy showed hesitation and remorse... I also didn't cry harder than Cassie at the end with Roxy, nope, totally didn't.

Ruin is…okay in my opinion, the environments were pretty cool and I liked Ruined Roxanne and Chica, but the constant jump scares and the endings were quite lame once the novelty wore off…like The Mimic.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who felt this way about Ruin. I did finish it, and while there were cool moments that perked me up at the time, as soon as they were over I'd realise that they weren't great at all. Like the daycare, I don't think it's possible to die there at all. Or the Freddy and Mimic chases, both of them were pretty much straight lines where if you sprinted you were fine. Maybe if they were more maze like, more challenging, then it would've been more fun. But no, you just run for ten seconds and then it's over and back to security nodes (or just the end of the game in the mimics case). At the end of the day, Ruin is a glorified walking simulator with very few moments that you're actually in any danger. It was ok on a first play through because seeing the occasional cool thing kept me hooked, but I don't think I could do it again

Overall, I enjoyed Security Breach's RUIN DLC, but I can see what you mean with the colors and lighting in the game NotRealName. As I had trouble to where it made navigating parts of the levels like Catwalks and the Bakery on my first time through to where I was suppose to go next that I found very confusing. But in the end it had a lot of great improvements that the Steel Wool team improved upon from the fans criticism with what they could've done better in the main game.

The Vanni Mask is so confusing to be honest, first of all why would Fazbear Entertainment make a Technician Mask based on a serial killer? That is beyond messed up and problematic. Unless the Vanni mask came before Vanessa become Vanny, but then that would bring the question why did Vanessa make her serial killer fursona based on a Technician Mask? it's a did the chicken came first or the egg sorta question. Oh yeah the whole teleporting, going through worm holes and phasing through objects, I would like to believe that that's just Cassie's implant chip making her think and see that, as Helpi can still talk to Cassie without the Vanni Mask on and the disappearing plush babies in that one room. I think it was a mix of time constraints and the fact that Ruin was built on top of Security Breach. So, there probably had to be a lot of tweaking and fixing to make it work. Dark Revival had a lot more time to work things out- and it shows! It's not easy to break that game.

I totally get what you mean about the setting of the ruined pizzaplex, its just so darn painful to look at at times. I have a hard time watching any playthroughs of ruin. The first time i watched a play-through of ruin all i was thinking was, holy crap my eyes and brain are melting trying to understand whats going on right now. I was only able to cope by lookin at cassie's hand and flashlight lol. Thats probably why i loved the fazwrench repair segments just because they were a nice break for my eyes lol.

I stopped playing RUIN shortly after getting past Monty's first encounter, after messing around with the golf minigame. For me, the mini golf was the most enjoyable part because even though its difficulty is way too high (imho) it's a nice little breather. No jumps. Just golf. I intentionally avoid any ruin spoilers, I wanted to go in completely fresh, I got through part of the first section with Monty and the angry rabbit man and I couldn't figure out how to continue...... The biggest issue with Ruin is that it is designed constantly being afraid of being "too short" and thus constantly pads out every little action. Every puzzle isn't a challenge, every enemy doesn't require some clever solution to get around, there's just some busywork you need to do. Find X nodes. Take mask on/off at blurry object. Point at symbols in picture. Walk through haunted house style linear environment where nothing interesting happens, and you are never challenged. Reused assets endlessly piled up...which is normally fine for game development, but leads to this sense of muddiness with how they are arranged and just adds to this general sense that every single drop of interesting, bespoke content is being wrung out for maximum "value."

About the game's ending, is there a way to NOT have it spoiled to you? I mean the game itself spoils the ending for you. Once you realize that "Gregory's" voice is sentence mixed, that what he says doesn't really make sense and once you here Candy Cadet's story about a monster in the basement that copied a child's mom's singing to lure the kid down into the basement, you can peace it together yourself that that isn't Gregory. And when you know of a little thing that went on in the FNAF community around that time you will even know who the final threat is.
