LAN parties are like drag races... it's all about the preparation, as any number of things can prevent you from participating. So why would I run Linux on a Gaming PC with no backup plan? Whether its SteamOS, or in this case, Pop_OS! with Steam and Proton, I felt strongly enough about Linux being a viable gaming option, I decided to make it my ONLY option at PDXLan this Fall.
But first... What am I drinking???
From Paperback Brewing comes Bunny with a Chainsaw (7.8%).

I've made to switch to Linux back in august and it's been fantastic. I started with Pop_os! and had a few issues with Bluetooth,audio issues and random crashes. Ended up on fedora and haven't looked back. It takes a few extra steps to install NVIDIA driver, multimedia Codecs and wine dependencies with the Rpm fusion repos but is well documented. Proton is like black magic, i have ran into minor problems with a few games but getting good frame rates on all titles i play with little to no bugs. Only down fall is is anti-cheat support. CSGO is native and i have zero issues running 300+ fps super smooth, apex legends works well for me as well but war-zone, valorant, rust, lol, overwatch are all are not supported. Keep ssd with a windows install to play all unsupported games but spend 90% of my time on Fedora. Jeff, you are correct on linux being a very capable of gaming platform and i even had some old titles that i couldn't get to play on windows 10 but with lutris & wine run perfect on Linux!

Love the mini-rant about Comcast. I have the same experience with Spectrum. Most ISPs just irritate me to no end these days because they don't see where anyone other than an enterprise that can afford the king's ransom they charge for something approaching reasonable for many power users, content creators, etc., could possibly need that much upload.

Great vid. I've been using POP OS for about a month now and while I think it's pretty good, I won't be switching to it for gaming rigs. Using Linux for gaming reminds me of the early days of 3D cards in PCs. Sometimes a feature is supported. Sometimes it's not. Sometimes there is an easy workaround. Sometimes you have to put in some elbow grease. Sometimes it simply doesn't work. Honestly it was fun to solve problems like that again, but for now I'll stick with Windows when gaming.

@Revenant_Knight
@Revenant_Knight 2 жыл бұрын
@@notjustforhackers4252 I imagine they're mostly standard fair. I've had some games glitch when it comes to full screen resolutions differing from the desktop resolution. Say Shadow of the Tomb Raider for example. I'll set that at 1080P but my standard desktop is 4K. When I get back to my desktop, it's now 1080P, but with a scaling option of 200% which I use for 4K. I try to use the GUI to switch it back but it only shows half the menu. Ultimately, I have to use the terminal to reset the resolution. Gaming wise I get proton glitches and crashes. A bit of experimentation and I usually can get the game running, but there usually is some graphical glitch or stutter. Sometimes it goes away, sometimes it doesn't. Red Out initially had both but it went away after playing for a bit. Several games I've had to try various version of Proton to see if it works, which reminds me of the driver/patch days of early 3D cards like the Riva 128, Verite, and Voodoo. Sometimes features like DLSS and Raytracing simply won't work (Cyberpunk) though FSR does. I've also had issues trying to install Nuvelo to access my Amazon Music. This is mostly from lack of experience with Flatpaks and apt get, but I haven't found a cohesive guide yet. For reference I'm using a System 76 Thelio which is a fantastic system.
@notjustforhackers4252
@notjustforhackers4252 2 жыл бұрын
@@Revenant_Knight NVIDIA and X11? Or NVIDIA wayland? Yeah any of these combo's are a pain in the arse for resolutions and scaling and the moment. I'm on Fedora with AMD and Wayland all these issues are pretty much solved on this hardware, moral? NVIDIA still sucks on Linux. Your grips are legitimate by the sound of it, blame NVIDIA. I'm not sure what Nuvelo is but if your taking about locally installed media then you probably just need to use the flatpak "controller" flatseal flatpak install flatseal and give the app permissions to access your files. Quite fancy a Thelio if they can ship with an AMD GPU, how's the fan noise these days? EDIT: if you launch a game through Lutris there's a setting to restore desktop resolution on game exit, might help.

Nice and nuanced ending. I'm not a Linux guy either... I have a rig with a Windows drive.. I am needing to use it less and less to the point all my laptops are using Linux and it is pretty much reserved for games I can't play which are dwindling. My partner decided she wanted to change the living room... and my TV PC was relegated to the side of an IKEA compartmental storage unit... I now have a steam deck as my main PC downstairs.. the idea was I could link it up with my proper rig.. It's taken over. I logged into Windows the other day to play a game I can play on linux but get better resolution/performance on.... it had been so long I needed to wait for loads of updates (updates are also prevalent on any linux distro) which highlighted how long it had been.

AMD FSR2 is just "temporal upscaler", not ML or NN used there, it is similar to any other shader-upscaler. Speaking about "big AAA tittles" - Ubisoft has exclusive deal with Microsoft about "games being exclusive to MS platform" this is reason why their Uplay not working in Linux/Wine/Proton. Same with new AAA-tittles especially that "released in GamePass" - exclusive to Microsoft Windows PC only, Microsoft did good job preventing GamePass to work in linux. Use of DXVK in multiplayer competitive games like Overwatch2/Apex/Destiny2/others - leads to account permaban in 5-10 mins after connecting to match.

The only REAL issue with Linux gaming these days is EAC. As a rule, if it runs EAC, it’s no-go. Proton and vulkan/dxvk makes Linux stupid easy to use for gaming
@notjustforhackers4252
@notjustforhackers4252 2 жыл бұрын
@@Quartzkensai This is incorrect. EAC is not an issue as it is fully supported on Linux and has been for a while now. Of course it IS up to the publisher to enable it in their game, nothing to do with the platform.

No idea where Red Hat have got with the support but they were working on it. I assume because the film industry want it supported for graphics workstations and rendering machines used by effects companies.

As an avg. linux user on my main rig, its been great, i use linux mint MATE v20.3, and well its starting to show its age already, so gaming on linux specifically is a challenge, for now i play nfs mw on baseline wine but steam wont work that well for instance, which leads me to believe i need a upgrade, though few days ago i broke the distro upgrading, with mintupgrade then i made a recover with timeshift, and now i am like wondering what should i do for the future.. Also i have a win11 vm with gpu passthrough and cpu pinning which its quite cool and yet my easy way to play some games.

Big issue with Linux gaming in 2022 still such, as not being able to play games with anti-cheat put in place like Rainbow Six Siege or Battlefield.

anti-cheat is fully supported on Linux. Its not the OS that's the issue, its the game publishers who don't turn it on. That's why they don't get my money.

I would say it's harder to cheat on linux than on windows because already existing cheats don't under linux and eve if you make a cheat if it's running through proton you need to find a way to get the information that the cheat need which the anti-cheat can notice. Currently it's harder to cheat on linux than on windows
